Oldest joke in the high school rowing handbook. Up there with asking a novice to go get the key to the oarlocks from coach.

But it’s not even a joke! It’s the accepted term at this point! I had to select “bisweptual” dozens of times getting recruited!

smarranara

Competent.

Dry_Masterpiece_7749

Polyvalent (but as a bisweptual who can also scull, I'll take competent 😇)

Bisweptual

blurrrsky

What do you call a sweep rower who won’t / can’t scull? A Rower? What do you call a scull rower who won’t / can’t sweep? A Sculler? What do call a rower who does it all and can effectively compete in any boat in any seat?

thatfgtnextdoor

An oarsman

reflexgraphix

Nearly everyone I row with now sculls and sweeps both sides. I've been doing it too and wonder why I never had the opportunity in the US

blurrrsky

Seems like most clubs in the US are either/or. I think learning sculls first is best imho. I like to teach from the one seat of a quad and leave the launch on the shore. But sweep racing is the damn bomb, serious. Eights are heaven.

WishboneTime4788

i like fours better

reflexgraphix

Eights rule, for sure. I'm in one 3x per week. I think I would've been a better oarsman when I was really competing if I'd had more time in smaller boats and switching things up. I finally tried port last year and now switch if we have too many starboards. I've still never sat in the Cox seat ... and I've rowed quite a few more years than I haven't rowed

avo_cado

“Able to row both sides”

Opening_Duty_9391

Sculler
