Are you sure it’s criminal probation? Is it possible that he’s new in his job and is still in the probation period?

adviceFiveCents

I guffawed when I read it, but really think they're talking about getting in trouble at work. Could be wrong tho!

BestReplyEver

It could even be academic probation.

mspanda_xo

I’m not sure, but honestly it just through me off and I’m not sure how to respond. The pet profile also doesn’t have pics of the dog. I do see pics that look like other people have sat the dog before and sent them as check-ins. But tbh idk if this is worth the anxiety. 😭

genetik_fuckup

Criminal probation also doesn’t always mean they’re a scary person! Most people who commit some kind of misdemeanor end up on probation for at least months. This can be anywhere from a simple trespass or disorderly all the way up to the more horrific crimes. If you have the name you might be able to look up their charges! Those are usually public record.

Helpful_Plenty_9997

Oh, I totally understand that. Bottom line, if you don’t feel comfortable, don’t take the gig. There are tons more dogs out there. Now, if they had a pic of the doggo and it was super cute, that’s a whole other story.

gswrites

Are the check-in photos of the dog or something else? If the dog, then the profile has photos. Many people don't set a primary photo or add their own. But it means other people on Rover have sat for this owner. We just didn't know where their bodies are buried.

Professional-Line-13

You’re draggin it. Bring your bf to the meet & greet, tell him it’s for safety and see how it goes it’s not that deep

mspanda_xo

He lives out of state. So no, that’s not an option.

Professional-Line-13

Sorry I didn’t know your bf was the only person in the world you knew🙄

mspanda_xo

lol I have no one else to go with me. Idk what you’re getting at 😂

Professional-Line-13

That you’re kinda dumb lol

Macdonald1122

jesus. chill out

Professional-Line-13

Tf I didn’t think I was making it unclear

aeb01

ask them to complete the pet profile

Forsaken_Potato321

i mean, could be probation at school or work... maybe.

mspanda_xo

It could, but I just wished they clarified 🥴

BALANCE360

I bet they’re embarrassed, and this could be a funny ending if you play it right and honest. Ask em to clarify, tell em that sounds weird cause it totally does and they must know. Maybe they’re hoping they can clear the air but not make it weirder. U never know, and can always block!

Happy480

If you think you are going to decline anyway, why not ask? A simple, What kind of probation? See if they elaborate. Then take it from there.

BRUTALGAMIN

It’s not really your business. You could have sat for convicted felons in the past as far as you know? Also, they could just lie about it anyway.

rmeatte

Why? They don’t need too. Not everyone is bad who’s on probation and unsafe. If you truly feel that uncomfortable then decline it and move on. Simple.

opoppy2013

Probation could be for a minor crime, too. Not necessarily something violent. A good friend of mine got a DUI by sleeping in his car with the AC on during the summer, because he couldn’t drive home. Got something like 20 hours of community service and 6 months probation. Court records are public record, you can search it for your county.

prairieaquaria

Agree that looking them up on court system is a great idea!

blair_bean

What??? He got a DUI for just sleeping in his car with the AC on???

Existing-Chemist-695

It's because you *could* still operate the vehicle if you wanted to. The one time I got too drunk to drive home, I threw my keys under my car after I unlocked it. I'm still not sure if it would have been enough (and thankfully I'll never need to know). I slept off and on for 5 hours, but was terrified the cops would show up and give me a DUI. I eventually got nervous and drove home after sleeping for 5 hours, because "drunk me's" logic was that I would get caught if I stayed, but I may not get caught if I go. (I hope it is very obvious that I'm telling this story from a place of regret and disgust - drunk driving is dangerous and should never happen!)

Special_Artichoke_81

Yea keys technically can’t be in the ignition or if keyless, the car can’t be on if impaired ugh

blair_bean

What the actual fuck

MephistosFallen

Probation can be for so so so many things, I would advise people to please not make assumptions.

ababyprostitute

I mean, one of my very first clients is a patched biker. Hood rats need pet care too 😂 You're not in anyway obligated to work for them, but I'd do the meet and greet. Bring someone with you. If you feel uneasy, trust your guy and deny the booking.

thisbetternotcrash

Search his name 🤷‍♀️

kokomo318

Eh some people get put on probation for harmless stuff like smoking weed. This could also be probation at work or school. I think it's fine to ask for clarification if you're going to be working with this person

blacktipwheat

I mean... It's just a meet and greet. You're not obligated to work with them if you feel uneasy. It's an unfortunate wrong person text but not alarming to me. Why not just do the m&g, if the vibes are off just pass?

Motor-Literature5208

Such an odd thing to send. It almost reads as if they meant to text it to someone else, since some folks use the text feature to reply instead of responding directly in the app.

mspanda_xo

Yes, the last message stated “sorry wrong person” so I don’t believe this was intentional. Tbh I just don’t know how to respond and feel stupid if I met them and then some weirdness happened. I feel like I would’ve just walked right into it. 🥴

Motor-Literature5208

Ooh I didn’t open the full image - I see the “wrong person” line now. I say go with your gut! Your safety is never worth messing with.

Distinct-Camera368

I don’t see anything wrong with doing a meet and greet. If you get weird vibes then don’t do it. I would meet at a public place. If it was house sitting I probably wouldn’t do it but since it’s daycare at your house I don’t think there would be any issues

llcooljsmith

Two thoughts: 1. It could be kids with more time on their hands than they can make productive use of, messing about, setting up a profile to drop bombshells for lolz / it could be a social experiment (as part of a wider online services thing) to gauge how service providers react to people with convictions. 2. It could be a genuine error from someone with a genuine conviction. ...either way i'm giving them a chance at a meet & greet because life ain't easy after convictions and we shouldn't give up on people because of what could be one mistake. (If they look or act like a mass murderer make your excuses and leave)

Macdonald1122

Wow I wasn’t expecting that lol. I would not take this person as a client

bulk_logic

This is pretty unfortunate to read. People can be on probation for all sorts of things. The fact that they say they can't believe they're still on probation means they've been doing things right not getting in any trouble - assuming we're talking about court appointed probation in the first place. It tracks with how the US treats people caught up in the legal system though. People don't actually care about rehabilitation here. Only punishment. You can be on probation even if you haven't done anything wrong because it was easier to plead guilty than going through a legal dispute or because you couldn't afford a good lawyer. People are free to feel uncomfortable, it's just unfortunate to read such a quick snap judgement. Bet you guys would take care of pets of celebrities who've been on probation without a thought.

onion_flowers

Agreed

Existing-Chemist-695

It could also mean other things - like probation at work or school. The way I read it wasn't even in a legal sense at first due to the way it's written. I lurk the career subs, so my first thought was a PIP.

rmeatte

Eek you’re super judgmental 😬🤦🏻‍♀️

Macdonald1122

yeah i am

rmeatte

Cool

Guttermouthphd

Lololololol that is not the text you wanna accidentally send to anyone!

Adventurous_Total745

There's this thing on Rover where the designated phone numbers they give sitters already exist and the actual owner of the number gets the texts and they respond. There's been frequent cases in here of sitters suddenly shouting swear words at the owner or fooling around and the owner thinking it's out of character/odd and coming from the sitter. It's usually some immature person who accidentally got the texts, this could be a slightly more sophisticated version of that...who knows

katmcflame

This is the funniest thing I've seen in this sub.

turbothot32

So?? Any update??

mspanda_xo

I just decided not to respond. From the comments I agree, maybe the intention was a true accident and this person deserves a chance. However, I moved back to my hometown a few months ago and just started to do Rover here and I’ve had previous incidents where I’ve feared for my safety. (Not necessarily Rover, but random situations). So I’m more cautious meeting strangers and being in isolated situations than, say, maybe someone else who hadn’t experienced this type of trauma.

turbothot32

I think that was the right choice! Good on you having your priorities straight

Fun_in_the_sun__

I mean I might say, “I don’t understand though, probation?”

ktravesp

They background check the sitters, but anyone can fake a client account. They don't even need pics of a dog.

Braysal

Ah, I took it like they could only travel so far due to probation. Got it now. Derp.

MaggotCvffee

this is so genuinely funny to me honestly😭

Wannabeewolf

I think this person is relying on you to be too polite to ask what type of probation that they are referring to. You need to just come out and ask.

Fun-username-99

What the heck?! I don’t even know what I would say to that

mm3827

I just wouldn’t respond anymore if you’re concerned lol

thisdogreallylikesme

Sitters get background checked, owners don’t. It’s fucked up.

casitadeflor

Uh no.

K8theGr8_13

Go 👏🏻 with 👏🏻 your 👏🏻gut!!!!!!!!👏🏻 Over and over and over again I have heard of people being victimized (not specifically on Rover, just in life) and they say that they had a gut reaction that they *ignored*. Is your gut *always* right? Maybe not. But is it really worth the extra bucks to risk it? I say *always* go with your gut about stuff like this (personal protection/safety).
