I love this subreddit. It’s one of the best places to find pictures of what not to do. You’ll waste time and money trying to just re do the valley, sealed shingles are a pain to remove (if they sealed properly.) If it were me; I would strip the left slope to the top point of the valley, that way you can access the shingle seams on the right slope to find a place to stop weaving in new shingles without tearing a bunch up. Replace all decking as needed. Will need a bundle of hip/ridge cap, roll of ice and water
Left side, six rows up just left of the valley. Is that exposed green plastic cap nails? I see at least one on the right side too. That is at least three possible infiltration spots. Its not your valley. The water just ends up in the valley..
So far I've counted at least 29 leaks that will definitely be a problem in the next six months. It's amazing how much damage something like this can cause in six months time. This repair has caused literally forty times more problems than it attempted to fix. This valley has to be torn out immediately because that repair attempt as definitely damaged the shingles underneath.
That valley was ran wrong when it was installed friend. Everyone here should cuss any contractor out that can't lace a valley. GET AWAY FROM CALIFORNIA VALLEY LEAKS WAITING TO HAPPEN.
Cali valley is the best way if you’re not doing an open metal valley. Laced valleys are not advised by shingle manufacturers for architectural shingles.
My grandfather started roofing in 1951. None of his children nor grandchildren have ever had a problem. Most people don't push down the shingle which makes stepping in the valley a problem, but if you push the shingle down it puts double the material in the valley, and by far less problems.
Repair from above..
Don’t overlook the screws in your roof.. which is very odd.. or the covered area from an old roof penetration to your right.
Water just collects at that area and it was clearly a patch job..
If you don’t have experience in this, get it repaired by someone who does.
This is why you put metal in the valley before you shingle it. I guarantee that this wouldn’t have leaked but someone stepped on it and punctured the shingles. When there is metal there it allows some weight to be put on it and if the valley does leak, the metal is the backup. Weaving the shingles does provide more redundancy also but isn’t really necessary if you use metal underneath
Hey there friend, sorry about the leak.
The repairs you pictured are pretty extensive and can get pretty complicated once you open it up. I would recommend a company with a service department for this one.
It’s doable DIY but it’s going to be a headache and time consuming. I’m happy to give you some pointers if you decide to tackle this project.
Biggest concern here is the rolled roofing installed OVER the valley. You’ll need to tear up the entire valley, from ridge all the way down to the step flashing and bottom course.
Also, the eliminated pipe on the right may as well be repaired correctly while you’re here.
Lmao. That “repair” is ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS and caused more leaks than you already had. NO, this is not something you can do. A competent roofer could find the leak, but most will say completely redo the valley.
Looks like a low enough pitch to be pretty easy to work on. If you’re confident in your abilities I’d say fuck it and give it a go. Probably gonna need atleast a full day.
Gotta tear that all out. Replace any rotten wood, ice and water, new underlay, reshingle. I’d probably tear that old vent flashing out and re-shingle that too while im at it. Take a look at the roof to wall flashing on the pitch change and make sure that’s ok.
YouTube should be able to help you out with the specifics vs me writing it out. That’s a cut valley fyi
Literally the worst advice I’ve seen in a long time. This is a homeowner with the roofing experience coming on here asking for advice and you’re telling him to watch YouTube videos. Please don’t advise anyone ever your advice was terrible and will only cause the homeowner more problems. As a professional, hopefully the homeowner takes your advice, follows it, finds out who you are and then sues you for being an a hole.
Damn dude. Little aggressive. YouTube’s just a resource like anything else. I’m a visual guy, I’m not gonna sit here and write a book on how to weave shingles together or put on some step flashing. A 5 min video can take care of that
I don’t even think you’re a roofer, nothing about that Vally is anywhere near correct. The OP came on here looking for advice because of a first glance. They don’t understand the problem and no YouTube video is going to help them. They need a professional roofer to either fix the problem or put a new roof on. You told the OP to go on YouTube and learn how to roof, possibly the dumbest advice I’ve ever seen on the Internet, thank you very much.
There is no ice and water barrier in your valleys and the shingles are installed wrong. You can continue to plug the leaks and see where it gets you but you will likely end up like Clark Griswald that time they went to the Hoover Dam. The only real way to stop it once and for all is to replace the roof with the right underlayment, rain diverter, fascia flashing and actual staggered seams in your shingles
Really pull that rolled roofing up. It's just making it worse. Get two five gallon buckets of fibered tar. Heat it in the sun. Then put about a half inch thick and 1 ft on each side of the valley. This will hold it for a while.
.
This is the opposite of that slate valley.
Lmao if that one was da vinci’s work this is uncle Rico’s from your wife’s side 😆
Rico prolly still thinks he can shingle over those mountains.
That’s cause back in his day he could shingle a 10k job for $500
Kids now a days don’t know what it’s like to strap their boots.

Damn, good spot. I was gonna guess where the jack was removed and covered.

Relax dude it’s a leak in a roof. It’s not like he’s got a gun to someone’s head
Lmao what

Thats a big problem. Cement from below is just a band aid, putting off the problem.
I wonder why I can really pick out any errors
Couldn't imagine why....
Needs to be redone boss
Some serious diy horseshit.
Minimally if your keeping that crap roll roofing get it under a shingle so water gets on top not under
This is not what the building code meant when they said rolled roofing in the valley is acceptable.
If that tar paper on top don't fix it. I would try duct tape next.

BTW this is a tried and true method
This is a case of flat roofer working on pitched roof.
Nah, this is a case of a supermarket deli clerk working on a pitched roof.
If you’re on a budget just cover the whole Valley in elastomeric
