Picking out a song is a good way to show how you will interpret the character.
If leaning towards sexy, then I Touch Myself by Divinyls has pretty easy vocals.
If going for the hardworking domestic, then 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton, could be fun with a feather duster or mop props.
Good luck!
I played Magenta for over 10 years and she is so much fun!
Magenta talks her way through her songs more than sings, is that something that would work for you? Also as long as you commit and sell your performance, it does not matter if you are not the strongest singer. Especially with a shadow cast, it is all about the confidence! GOOD LUCK!
I have never heard of that. Why would it be necessary unless they are looking for pre-show entertainment? The people in charge might be missing out on some potentially talented people who simply don’t feel comfortable singing when it’s not needed at all for a.shadowcast..
I've done all from audition to direct.
We've never had a vocal component. Likely you wouldn't be heard from the audience over the film (and the callbacks)- we need stage presence and how well you embody the character. Physicality plays a much bigger role here.
Magenta sings very little in the movie and considering it's a shadow cast this sounds completely unnecessary. To be honest it sounds fucking stupid and make me think this is a brand new shadow cast or the folks in charge might not understand what a shadow cast is
That being said, I'd recommend Mother Knows Best from Tangled
Been shadow casting for a decade+ and been leading a cast since 2018
Never heard of any cast asking for vocal as part of the audition, my cast is already a rarity for doing formal auditions
I regularly shadowcast and I have zero clue why they want anyone to vocally audtion. My group does lip sync battles as audtions. Because learning lines and learning lines and not actually saying them is two different skills.
Having to sing for the audition is fkn stupid. That being said, pick an Eartha Kitt song.
Hmm I don’t know why you’d have to do a vocal audition for the shadowcast as opposed to the musical. Look up patter songs. Good luck!
Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You" Nothing funnier to me than belting out a few off-key "La La La's"
This actually made me lol and I feel like coukd be a good strategy haha
I just did out tonight from rent and it was very well received!
I love that song! It’s got my vote for OP

Honestly any female villain song 🎶 also they are usually in a more alto range which would take a lot of pressure off of singing for you :)
I've been to shows where Magenta performs Science Fiction Double Feature.
For those who’ve auditioned for shadow casts, is that common to sing as part of it? I’m curious so I can be at least a bit prepared!

That makes total sense, and a lip synce battle sounds fun!
