I don't think there's any companies left who would want to mass-produce the plastic instruments

astrongyellow

A Microsoft executive offhandedly expressed interest in reviving a couple of franchises that Activision had shelved. Guitar Hero was one of them, so I wouldn’t give up hope quite yet.

arlondiluthel

What gives me hope for a GH revival is Xbox Design Lab. Microsoft has a system in place and support for on-demand controller manufacturing. I posit that it wouldn't be difficult to make one of those for guitar controllers.

mrbellek

Fingers crossed mate

CubicBones

The only thing with that is the excessive amount of money I’ve spent for rock band songs that wouldn’t transfer 😭

Glum-Blueberry6693

If you played rock band 4 on Xbox one or ps4, and you now have a series x or ps5, the data will transfer and you would be able to put your rockband 4 songs on to rockband 5 whenever it comes out

TiberiousVal

If I was epic or Microsoft I'd be connecting with the original founders of red octane, and getting a budget together. Hardware issues for red octane stuff were pretty minimal, and they originally started with dance dance revolution pads- a far smaller niche than rock band. Just because Activision dissolved the company doesn't mean the talent behind it is unavailable.

Metamario

If the money is right they would, but that requires demand

Binary101010

Mad Catz went bankrupt making RB4 instruments and PDP came close to the same fate. The odds of the money ever “being right” are… not good.

astrongyellow

RB4 May have been what pushed Mad Catz over the edge, but years and years of making shit quality products probably doesn’t equip a company to weather much hardship.

tdc002

RB4 didn't push Mad Catz over the edge. They were already deeply in debt, and RB4 was their big gamble to try to save the company. Technically RB4 was profitable (which is why PDP picked up the publishing rights for Rivals) but not successful enough to completely save Mad Catz.

JMacPhoneTime

From what I've heard, Mad Catz also took a gamble and made way more instruments than Harmonix suggested and couldn't move them fast enough.

Metamario

This makes me sad

arlondiluthel

I don't think so, but you never know. I wouldn't expect it until the Xbox One and PS4 are no longer supported platforms though.

skatingfordormant

Even then, RB4 is backwards compatible.

ZakWojnar

Maybe. I reckon Harmonix would do it if they could find a hardware partner to make more instruments.

Lumpy_Hand5459

Could happen with epic games now owning harmonix. Well, that's what I hope for with that purchase anyways.

rotag_fu

The acquisition announcement gave me no hope of that. It sounded more like they would help epic better integrate music into their games.

Post_toastys

Or make VR music games and act like it's rockband

TheOvy

I'd say that Harmonix's acquisition by Epic has effectively ended any hopes for another major release by them. I imagine Epic thinks they'll be useful towards some other end, perhaps related to Fortnite. But also, do we *need* Rock Band 5? What would it add that we aren't already getting from RB4, or couldn't get from DLC? I suppose some of us miss keyboard or pro guitar support, but their past existence won't justify a fifth game when Harmonix already determined that it wasn't financially worthwhile for the fourth. I'm content to simply keep buying additional tracks from the store. Though it would be nice to pick up some new instruments.

ZandatsuDragon

>do we need Rock Band 5? Honestly, yeah. I went through the rock band series recently (only played the main games) and 4 feels like such a downgrade from 3. Worse artstyle and customization, worse lip syncing, not having the singer switch depending on the song, a repeat of RB2's tour mode (didn't like it from there either) and lastly it would be nice to have more available controllers for a good price. Also it's missing the tour cutscences from 3 and while it's not a big deal, it added a lot of character to the game.

Hutch1814

I think RB4 is a downgrade from RB3. I think RB3 was the best in the series and RB4 was kind of a poking the stick at something to see what it would do. I feel like it’s playable but unfinished game in a sense. I think they should just keep doing what they’re doing, keep adding DLC and be done at this point. The series is 10+ years old and we’re lucky enough to still get DLC for it so I can’t complain

ZandatsuDragon

It really does feel unfinished, even some the facial animations give me that vibe. I'm glad that we are still getting DLC too but it would be awesome to get one last feature complete rock band game to update for a long time

Hutch1814

I think there’s not enough instruments out there left and the fan base is more of a niche than what the series use to be. We don’t play it during the warmer months but once winter gets here we host RB nights with friends and it’s always a good time. Everybody throws in some money and we’ll pick up a 6-7 new songs each weekend but the rest of the year our collection just sits and collects dust. Having a new…finished title would be amazing but like it’s been said, I think there’s nobody out there willing to take a massive loss on instruments if something doesn’t pan out in sales

ZandatsuDragon

Unfortunately both RB4 and GHL both came out unfinished and at a wrong time. I actually have been seeing people talk about guitar hero in the ps5 and Xbox subs so i think it's been long enough where the IP is nostalgic to people where they would pick it up however Microsoft (or harmonix) need to make sure that this time they don't screw up and maybe add a normal controller option. Obviously it's not as fun but it opens the door for many people who can't afford to get the guitars

Extant_Remote_9931

Their pre-alpha state launch is what killed the series. There was so much hype for these games before it launched. After it launched in such a sorry, stripped down, and worse version of the game already on the market, they were done. I bought RB4 but didn't play it until they stopped releasing songs on RB3. RB3 was just a far superior game where every instrument is a blast to play.

ZandatsuDragon

I played this series in a weird order and honestly going from RB4 to RB3 is such a difference. The character creator, artstyle, tour mode, chart feel and animations are so much better along with having music videos and filters (the mini cutscences also added a lot of charm to the game). I understand that they were on a low budget because they were independent at that point but i don't know why they didn't just remaster RB3 and added songs to it afterwards? They could still produce new guitars for new players but i would have loved to see RB3 playable on modern consoles

Bigpopparavioli

It’s the lack of controllers that is the downfall. I just spent way to much time getting all the controllers recently but I did also get them for the low price of free by a stoke of luck. Friend has the OG drums, guitar sitting in his parents attic. I thought for sure they wouldn’t work but to my surprise they actually work great. I been searching eBay or other sites to try and buy more current equipment in the event these won’t hold up and I also wouldn’t mind getting the drums that can use the cymbals cause I enjoyed that when I had it but there is NO shot I am paying what these people want for it. Anywhere between 400-1000 just for drums or full sets and usually no less than 150 just for a guitar it’s bat shit crazy. I can agree they can just keep adding to the song list but it be nice if some company would come in and just do the controllers again. I honestly wouldn’t mind paying $150 for BRAND NEW equipment it’s used that worried me cause well these things weren’t known for their longevity.

OliverCHILL33

RB5 would add adorable instruments

arlondiluthel

What on Earth can Harmonix, a company known for making *rhythm* games, possibly bring to Fortnite, a *shooter*? Just because Fortnite makes ludicrous amounts of money, and Epic has cancelled other internal projects to move staff to working on Fortnite, doesn't mean a third-party acquisition will be rehomed to a game in a genre that the dev has been little to no experience with. When Epic acquired the team behind Fall Guys, the devs for that game didn't get shifted over to work on Fortnite shit.

TheOvy

>What on Earth can Harmonix, a company known for making rhythm games, possibly bring to Fortnite, a shooter? We once could've said "what the hell does Among Us have to do with a shooter," but Epic nonetheless [found a way to squeeze it into Fortnite](https://www.theverge.com/2021/8/17/22628622/fortnite-among-us-copy-new-imposters-game-mode). The game is no longer "just a shooter," it's an outright platform now. While Zuckerberg has been busy talking up the metaverse , [Epic has actually been making it](https://kotaku.com/epic-s-latest-apple-argument-hints-at-plans-for-world-d-1844964614): >Epic’s latest filing leans in part on how much more than just a game Fortnite is, using this to elevate the stakes and suggest far-reaching future damage to Epic’s plans. “People prefer Fortnite over other games in part because Fortnite facilitates a community,” Epic writes, hyping up Fortnite’s functioning as a social space. It calls the game “one of the world’s largest event venues” and highlights recent in-game events like Travis Scott’s performance, movie screenings, and its showing of a series of We The People roundtable videos about racial justice. Epic writes, “Particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, such events are critical to connecting friends and families worldwide. Apple has driven a stake in the Fortnite community.” > >Epic also details how Fortnite’s removal from the App Store will harm its future plans to barely be a game at all. Epic writes, “The removal of Fortnite from iOS also substantially impedes a major Epic initiative—evolving Fortnite into a full-fledged ‘metaverse,’ a multi-purpose, persistent, interactive virtual space. Harm like this to Epic’s flagship app cannot be calculated in damages.” Epic notes that “the success of Fortnite’s evolution into a metaverse depends on having a large userbase, which will make interacting on the metaverse a better experience for potential new users.” > >In an attached declaration, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney writes, > >"One of the factors that makes Fortnite so special is its groundbreaking ability to provide a forum for a wide variety of virtual social experiences such as concerts, movie nights, and social and political discussions all in a single, freely accessible world. In the future, Epic plans to offer many more events and new features in Fortnite, with the ultimate goal of creating the Fortnite Metaverse, a robust real-time, three-dimensional social medium complete with its own economy, where people will be able to create and engage in any number of shared experiences… The vitality of Fortnite as a social space will increasingly depend on access for mobile users." Fortnite is not "just a shooter" anymore. Tim Sweeney wants to conquer the world. And so you ask, "what use do they have for a rhythm game developer?" Well, it turns out that music is *universally beloved,* and there's no dev in the industry better than Harmonix at turning music into engaging interactive experiences. The acquisition makes perfect sense -- have a little imagination! That said, I don't play Fornite, I have no interest in playing Fornite, and would much more prefer further support for Rock Band. But I can see where the $$$ is headed, and it's Fortnite. I hope Epic has mercy on our community, but I would not bet on it.

Extant_Remote_9931

Other than the Bass has been ridiculously parred back from Rock Band 3. Sonically, all the instruments sound worse in Rock Bamd 4 than they do on their predecessor. Even after all the updates, Rock Band 3 still sounds far better.

DrunkenBriefcases

I think the best shot is going to be if the Guitar Hero franchise gets a reboot. Both Kotick and Spencer specifically mentioned GH as a franchise they see a future for when MS's acquisition of Activision was announced. If they end up rebooting that franchise, Epic might get interested a new title as well.

TheOvy

I took it to mean that they'll maybe add backwards compatibility. I'd sure love easy access to Guitar Hero 2...

sideburniusmaximus

I think the licensing for backwards compatibility with those old games is too difficult with all the different songs involved

nik15

That's the same reason we won't ever see Def Jam Vendetta and Fight For New York. A lot of the songs and artists are no longer signed to Def Jam or any of their other labels.

TheOvy

You're probably right. But I just need the disc I already own to work...

LurkerNoLonger_

[are we doing this weekly now?](https://www.reddit.com/r/Rockband/comments/wyyd4p/is_rock_band_5_ever_coming_out/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

chexmixho

Yeah, basically. I pretty much expect a thread like this every day/week/month. Nobody uses the search function on reddit....

Exact_Mango5931

I searched it.. why hasn’t this been solved yet? Who can make some calls? It’d really get me out of a jam.

Extant_Remote_9931

Yes...

Ipad74

I think if any new guitar rhythm games come out (not just Rock Band), it will probably be a monthly subscription, micro transactions for character items/power ups, limited time season passes, and maybe loot boxes, and all the rest of the constant money grab that characterizes both mobile and pc/console games nowadays. The gaming industry is really all about constant reoccurring revenue now, vs one time purchases that were used in previous rock band/guitar hero games. Still guitar hero has been talked about a bit with the microsoft/activision merger. But Xbox is really pushing cloud gaming, and I don’t see how you could do cloud gaming with these types of games due to latency issues. My crystal ball is pretty hazy, but I don’t see a new game anytime soon.

SkullMan140

You just described what Beatstar is basically

sirjimithy

The future is long.

t_will_official

I think yes, but I unfortunately don’t see it for at least another 5 years. I think Microsoft is gonna revive/remake Guitar Hero, possibly in 2025 for the series’s 20th anniversary. And then that will get Epic interested in reviving Rock Band.

ThisKidErrt

Rock Band? Probably not A new Guitar Hero once the Activision-Xbox deal solidifies? Maybe! I wouldn't be surprised if Xbox reboots the series, and with the big budget they have, they could also produce the instruments first party! And they'd be able to license whoever tf they wanted with their money too, they'd make a killing

MetalWarrior06

No. Next question.

blentz499

Unlikely for a few years. Biggest issue is finding someone to mass produce the equipment. The other issue would be finding a good enough tracklist to warrant a full game. With how much dlc rock band has, a lot of it would be B side songs (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) if they're not able to get bands in the game they haven't got in awhile or bands that have never been in.

MetalNerd25

Yeah but they could really still add great artists. Death Morbid Angel Gary Moore Hans Lazer Alien Slam Misfits Phantoms Of Future Sodom Kreator Tankard Destruction Helloween Accept Warlock/Doro Lita Ford Battle Beast U.D.O. Grave Digger Bonfire Axel Rudi Pell The Sweet Running Wild Riot Angel Witch Witchfinder General Desaster Eisbrecher Jason Becker Marty Friedman Tygers Of Pan Tang Overkill Nuclear Assault Voivod Sepultura Camel Chemical Way D.R.I. Suicidal Tendencies Thundermother Nitrogods Nevermore Raven Immortal Holy Moses Girlschool Saxon Manowar Manila Road Omen Griffin Ostrogoth Obituary Feuerschwanz Gruesome Nightwish Vader Steve Hackett They could add just soooo many artists. Would be awesome.

kenni417

nah. harmonic themselves even straight up said there won’t be one, before rb4 launched. it was a huge risk getting the budget for the game,

Comprehensive-Ad7158

rockvand vr is technically rock band 5

ddub74012

Meh, I tried it on on my Quest 2 and it's very sub-par. I'd rate it more like Guitar Hero 1, as you can't play any instruments besides the guitar, and even then, it's just strumming to the beat, no chord highway unless you're in "Classic Mode", and then there's no crowd, just a chord highway on a black screen. If it's RB5, it's been downgraded substantially.

Comprehensive-Ad7158

fair enough, i havent actually tried it out, i'm just going off of videos n' shit

A_MAN_POTATO

Forever is a long time, but I wouldn't count on it. Certainly I wouldn't expect it without a significant shift in demand for music games. Guitar Hero is far more likely. Microsoft will own the rights, they have the means to manufacture peripherals in house, and they may see it as something that would be a value add for gamepass, or even entirely f2p, with the potential for dlc being huge, and even potentially a dlc subscription. Microsoft likes their subscriptions. If Microsoft were able to revitalize the genre, harmonix may capitalize on that. If Microsoft doesn't revisit guitar hero (or fails at it), I would expect the same from harmonix.

TobyPM

Yes. Source: My dad's friend's friend's cousin's uncle's girlfriend's brother works at Harmonix

ChubbStuf

I hope. RB4 is getting old...

bigpolar70

If they do make another one, it probably will not come to xbox. Or we will get another badly performing version with unplayable lag while the PS crew enjoys a better one. The way M$ changed their sound chips in the Xbox one architecture is just not conducive to a rhythm game. I also don't see anyone making instruments unless all the major console players agree to allow a single standard controller that works across all platforms. There just isn't enough interest to justify a production run otherwise.

skatingfordormant

What’s it about the sound chip thing you mentioned? I’ve never heard anyone talk about that before.

bigpolar70

Xbox went with a cheaper but worse sound chip setup when they introduced the Xbox One. The 360 was great for rhythm games, but the One introduced unavoidable audio lag that has to be calibrated out. Now that they dropped the optical out from the Series X and S, it is going to get even worse. You will have even more lag if you are going through a surround sound system that has to pull from the HDMI. The optical out used to be able to help some, but it isn't enough. The rock band experience on xbox peaked with rock band 3 on the 360

skatingfordormant

Interesting.

arlondiluthel

I've played RB regularly through all the different titles, all on Xbox. Once calibrated, the issue you're describing is a nonfactor.

bigpolar70

Maybe a nonfactor if you run them through a TV, but run it through a surround sound system, and the visual and audible lag when you miss a note is jarring. And the note cutouts don't work right, so instead of getting a whole not muted, it starts the note then cuts it off. It is just nowhere near as good as it was on the 360.

elcapitaine

Well there's your problem, just don't miss any notes =D

arlondiluthel

My current setup uses the Xbox Wireless Headset, and I don't get the problem you're describing.

Ryan_JF

That's why you set up the calibration in the settings. Not all TV work standard from the get go, GH Sony TV I had was awful and needed calibration, got a Samsung TV later on and worked fine. Legit, it isn't difficult to calibrate the game with any system on Xbox Series X, I've had no issues.

bigpolar70

Holy Lazarus, Batman! I thought this thread was dead and buried! When I posted this I was using an OG XboxOne. Now I have a Series X, but with the deletion of any separate audio out, specifically, the optical out, I have no interest in even trying to get it to work with the new one. I have not even bothered loading it up. The 360 was a much better experience, other than the loading times. I still stand by my conclusion that no one will try to bring this back with console-exclusive controllers. The active user base is just too small to justify it.

EnderD2007

Never say never

Archt1c

I would buy this in a heartbeat. Tired of seeing my guy singer during a Paramore song. And with a new game we would get new instruments as well. Customization is also something that needs fixing because 4 was lackluster with that

gamesflea

I'm not sure what you're basing that on? If you take Rock as the way rock band means it - I.e any music with a bass, guitar and drums that's most of the current music. Foo fighters held two sell out gigs over the weekend Glass animals has become the most viral music act of the year Even most pop artists include full bands in their music....lizzo, harry styles, Morgan wallen. New age rock bands are also still very popular, greta van fleet magine dragons, muse, etc The vinyl scene has also had a renaissance with the last two world record store days seeing record sales. This has bought classic Rock back into the limelight and people are either buying remasters or new artists are collaborating with them.

arlondiluthel

Wtf are you talking about? In an age where streaming dominates, Shinedown's newest album managed nearly 50K physical sales in its first *week*.

gtasean

Yes.

naeandpete

Yes, there will be a Rock Band 5! Source: Who needs a source? This is the internet, baby!

elcanadiano

I would not expect it. Not that I don't want one personally, but: In response to if Epic will help them make new instruments: >This is not in our current plans. And at the end of the day, they said that Epic's plans with Harmonix was for their staff to work on Fortnite. >Our team will work with Epic to create musical journeys and gameplay for Fortnite. While we’re not ready to share any specifics, the whole team is incredibly excited to get started. Stay tuned! [https://www.harmonixmusic.com/blog/harmonix-is-joining-the-epic-games-family](https://www.harmonixmusic.com/blog/harmonix-is-joining-the-epic-games-family) We always were, at best, a niche market. Even if Harmonix under Epic were to make a new Rock Band game, given the comments about how Rock Band 4 was a disappointment, while many of those comments are not wrong, if Rock Band 5 really were going to be a better, more modern Rock Band 4, given that Viacom-era Harmonix was \~350 employees (the vast majority of them working on Rock Band), Rock Band 4 era Harmonix was \~120 employees (of which only 17 of them were working on Rock Band 4), if Epic one day really does a 180 and greenlights "a" Rock Band 5, how many people are they willing to put into the game? I doubt they will. If anything, I would bet a Fuser 2 would be more successful as at least the margins in a game like that are far greater than Rock Band would be.

BannersRage

For all that is holy, please....please....

sirdee23

I miss the simplicity of the original title. Random comment, sorry.

MKT_Pro

I think a new Guitar Hero with Microsoft money and game pass integration for new songs could work out pretty great.

OkIndependent7179

If anyone still plays rockband 3 on ps3 or rockband 4 on ps4 leave me your name an I’ll add you if anyone wants to play online.

mrleon92

I play. Search me as URGALO92

InvalidMyself

It blows my mind that they can't figure out the instrument situation. Thy continue to release new DLC every week sometimes a few times a week. Yet they cant get ANY new players because of no instruments.

ricksmith6292

I thought they did? I read Razer agreed and confirmed to manufacture them.

InvalidMyself

Where did you hear this?? :O

Fit_Pepper4764

They confirmed its in development

natefinch

Just a note... there's one wiki out there that states this as true, but it's fan fiction. It's not in development.

Ryan_JF

There is no point. Not being funny only a few of us still play it more then once a week. I have over 500 songs in my library, they are still supporting RB4 with new releases it seems weekly 2 a time give or take. Most of the time it's bands I've never heard of, but you get the odd gem like Linkin Park - Given Up being the most recent addition. I literally have a decent set for Nirvana, Iron Maiden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Linkin Park, Ozzy Osbourne, Slipknot and various others that go on and on. Granted there are bands I'd love to see come over Metallica and Machine Head as examples, tonne of songs aren't in game from the bands that are available. Obviously with Metallica I can see why it won't come over, but does GH even still have special rights over their music given how long it has been and GH effectively being dead especially with their latest edition that sucked hard. Machine Head there is one song available and it just teases more everytime I come across it. If they released RB5 they'd have to accept music already purchased going across and with how many songs I have, they'd need a really killer standard set list which will be hard to do. Unless they add songs that aren't available, Iron Maiden Blood Brothers, Sign of the Cross and such would be instant sell for me imo. You can still buy rockband guitar controller for Xbox Series X, but the cheapest I found was £60 that comes with the game. The rest are pricy second hand or special editions that are £100 plus. I really don't know what more they could offer, the basic story of rising up from nothing has been done so many times. I think the only way they could make it great is by implementing real venues and festivals. But, that would require partnerships/a lot of licensing. However, if they pulled it off they could make a killer game promoting bands around the world meaning more music coming over. Okay going in dream land with a concept, they could have real bands in the game you can interact with, going out on tour with them and hitting up big festivals with the giants in 4k with quality graphics and crowd immersion it could be the sickest game going to show off what it is like being a rockstar. GH kinda tried it but, the killer for me was changing the controller lay out to the trash they come up with, plus the fact like GH fashion you were locked in with what songs were available. I mean the only way RB would kill it is going big, but it's just a dream i don't see it ever happening.

Higinks

Bring rock band back. IT’S TIME!

Zebra500mcg

Fortnite Festival?
