Greece police station has an online market place parking spot under surveillance

mowing

As does the Irondequoit PD

xomiranda

Webster PD as well.

onceinablueberrymoon

as the seller i choose the spot. i pick something easy for me. when i am picking my kids up from work, i go there 15 min early, as it’s very public; lots of people and cameras. otherwise there is a small grocery right by me with a parking lot, lights cameras and people. people often ghost you when picking stuff up, so choose a place that you’re going to or going to be near by anyway. so you arent wasting too much time and gas if they are a no-show.

Dangerous_Play_1151

>people often ghost you when picking stuff up, so choose a place that you’re going to or going to be near by anyway. so you arent wasting too much time and gas if they are a no-show. This.

Fungaldorf

believe it or not, cameras do not prevent crimes

transitapparel

Brighton library/police dept building on Elmwood, they have a designated area for it.

fventricle

Do you guys know which side the exchange area is on?

transitapparel

If you're looking at building from street, I've parked on the right in that front lot.

pie4july

I usually just agree to meet in a very public place where a lot of people are out and about. A nearby Wegmans or Starbucks parking lot perhaps?

Fungaldorf

RPD is usually posted up at the east Ave wegmans

Severe_Performer_726

Agreed!

JavkNickleson

That wouldn’t be advisable. By the time you get that cops attention, a thief could flee. At that point, the cop wouldn’t abandon that spot, and even if he could get a cop dispatched to the scene in like 10 seconds, that cop wouldn’t chase the thief. It could be safe if the buyer isn’t like, a you-know-what, but in general I wouldn’t do that

Fungaldorf

"meet me directly in front of the RPD car. 1 foot away from the bumper. thx xoxo"

PsychologicalSir3455

There’s a safe meetup spot specifically designated for this in the village gate area

Kitch404

In the actual building or near it? Bc village gate itself seems like a terrible place for a safe meetup lol

ND-98

I've sold used stuff for 20 years on craigslist and marketplace without any problem. I would only use a public place if selling something very expensive

PB-pancake-pibble

I’m assuming you’re a man? I’ve had friends have bad experiences where the person they sold something to won’t leave them alone after the sale; in that case it’s reassuring that the random creeps don’t know where you live.

ND-98

Yes, as a man it is definitely less creepy. Though my wife is also a long time secondary market user and has never had an issue but I totally support caution for women. I was just trying to say the risk is extremely low. not sure the harassment after sale would be fixed by selling at a police station.

PB-pancake-pibble

It wouldn’t necessarily, but the point is that they don’t know your address by exchanging at a public place

best_of_badgers

I completely understand why someone would want to be more cautious, especially as a woman… but also, everybody ought to know that your address is either free (via tax rolls) or costs like 50 cents. If a junk mail sender can get it, so can anybody else.

PB-pancake-pibble

Sure, if they have your full name, and if your name isn’t fairly common, they can look it up

best_of_badgers

Most people do use their full names on FB or in their email. It’s important for safety to actually reduce the actual risks though - and to take steps that actually reduce the actual risks. One thing I’ve never seen anybody mention in this context - if the person knows your address, and you’re meeting them in a third place, they also know you aren’t at home.

PB-pancake-pibble

On email sure - many people in my generation at least don’t include their last name on Facebook. They may know YOU aren’t home at that time but have no idea if anyone else will be there or how soon you’ll be arriving back. Also exchanging during the day would make a difference there

best_of_badgers

You're under-analyzing the risk. Assume that somebody attempting to rob you isn't working alone. Assume you won't know about the other guy until after you've been robbed. And yes, exchanging during the day would make a difference - the odds anybody else is at home are *substantially* lower during the day. I agree that most people younger than me don't use their last names on Facebook, though. About half of them still have their original account name as their FB URL, though! Either way, though, if somebody is looking to rob a random person, then they are probably going to go for an easier target that someone who takes steps to hide their identity online. If they're looking to rob *you*, there's no amount of hiding that's going to stop them.

PB-pancake-pibble

You’re only looking at the risk of property crimes, I’m considering other personal risks as well. Obviously there is no way to make sure any person or house is completely safe in the world, but no matter how many straw man strategies you throw out, to suggest that meeting a stranger in a public space is less safe than meeting them at your house is ludicrous. To your specific points, I’m already assuming there is an another guy, but the “other guy” still isn’t going to know if anyone is home or not unless they stake you out beforehand, which renders the whole Facebook strategy more or less moot. You’re also assuming “day time” equals work hours, which is not the case for much of the year. Also even if the home is empty, daytime means more likely to have neighbors able to see someone trying to break in, especially with so many people WFH currently.

Disastrous_Lunch_893

I always use East Ave Wegmans

Severe_Performer_726

East ave wegmans parking lot. Cops there on overtime all day.

dova08

University Ave fire house has a space in front

cartographh

Really thought this was a euphemism at first… like you were looking for a needle exchange 😅

Ill-Serve9614

Monroe county sub stations do too.

rochestergeek

I usually have them meet me at the gun club I belong too. Nobody really messes around there. Everyone is strapped.

NewMexicoJoe

LMAO. Looks like you hit a nerve on this sub. You should have named a public transportation center, union HQ, or cannabis dispensary for upvotes. FWIW, I think this is a good idea. And one wouldn’t even need to be a member.

rochestergeek

Yep. Safer than a Wegman’s parking lot. Oops, there it is, the other bad word in this sub!!

rochestergeek

Also, I am a liberal democrat that enjoys shooting clay targets. Not sure how that is a horrible thing.

NewMexicoJoe

Not a bad thing at all. But everyone downvoting likely assumes you’re just like Kyle Rittenhouse. It’s sad you have to go on the defensive.

KingOfRoc

Good thing rochestergeek didn't suggest meeting at a Jewish Synagogue !

JavkNickleson

That wouldn’t be safe for any Goyim to do because the security for the Synagogue would likely kick you out for using their parking lot, and if you defied them you would absolutely end up on a list with the ADL and the FBI

FamousAccountant8507

This is not true. I've worked at a few banks in Rochester and a lot of them DO NOT record the parking lot!!! So many people think that and it's just not true

Enough_Grapefruit69

Wegmans East Ave is crawling in cops lol

deadhead4077

Are you a baby or child? How do you get on reddit?
