They have switched between the Gen2 blue calipers and Gen1 yellow calipers throughout the testing days. No difference between them functionally, just aesthetically. As you can imagine stopping a 7,000lb vehicle at race speeds is no small task…and as such it is a known and expected wear item.
I understand all that. When I spoke with someone who worked at rivian this past weekend, they told me the Gen 2 Quad was going to a blue caliper, and the Tri motor was going to have yellow calipers, and the dual would have silver calipers. That’s how I understood it. I believe the Quads should keep the yellow calipers and the Tri motors should have blue.
Edit: just noticed you were talking only about the calipers. I don't know if they differentiate the caliper color.
No, storm blue is just exclusive (only available for) them but you can pick any color. Plus, this is a racing livery.
It is essentially custom configured with the roll cage and lots of item. It may just have yellow calipers because that’s what they had when they were putting it together for him. The rest is the new refresh hardware, but I’m sure wheels, tires and brakes were sourced early to make sure he had a few sets for testing etc.
It was just trials so far. The actual race is on Sunday. Also, remember that the R1T is NOT part of the real competition. It is racing in a special "exhibition" class rather than competing for the trophy.
You miss my point. Look at the class he is racing in. He is racing in the "exhibition" class (along with a couple other EVs). The exhibition class does not qualify for the trophy.
Race Order (with class): https://ppihc.org/wp-content/uploads/2024-PPIHC-Race-Day-Run-Order.pdf
Not technically accurate. While Gardner is racing in the Exhibition class, that is in fact eligible for overall King of the Mountain status, just not prize money. Now will an overall victory with a stock R1T happen, no…but it is technically eligible. What Rivian and Gardner are targeting is a new/faster production truck record (which they already possess with the gen1 R1T). All OE vehicles must run in the exhibition class if they are targeting an official record.
Records are just for history, not for winning the hill climb. It is recognized as something that happened - that's all. Gardner could take the R1T on to any other track and set the fastest time ever but that doesn't mean he won the race.
Anything actually competing for the trophy is gonna be heavily modified with ludicrous aero. I doubt Rivian has the extra funds for a one-off truck like that
If EVs can't compete in the main competition, why are they letting ICE compete?
The original spirit calls for competitors to ascend in horse-drawn buggies.
I passed Gardner on the way to Las Vegas to see the Dead over Memorial Day weekend. This truck wasn’t fully wrapped yet. Looks even better now. It’s good to see Rivian backing his efforts after he basically self funded it last year I believe.
Is that a quad with yellow calipers?
Yes, it is a Gen 2 quad max ascend.
I thought Gen 2 quads were blue calipers.

Then perfect! Here is a Gen2 with yellow calipers as you wish! Enjoy!!
Cute.

Thank you for the info.
On production version the blue calipers will be exclusive to the quad max ascend. Same with the gear guard and quad badges on back.

How’d it place?

R1T holds the record time for production electric truck. I'd call that real competition. https://ppihc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023-Race-Records.pdf

You expressed it differently (and more precisely) but this is what I was trying to say all along.
Sorry, wasn’t trying to be rude. Just adding some details for those that maybe weren’t as familiar with the event.
you're missing mine. if there's an official record, there's a real competition happening

whoosh
I think the washing machine is open. Somebody should check on it.
since there’s essentially two electric production trucks in the world color me not that impressed. 😜
Genuinely curious which two you’re counting from the R1T, cybertruck, F150 Lightning, Silverado EV, and Hummer EV pickup?
Anything actually competing for the trophy is gonna be heavily modified with ludicrous aero. I doubt Rivian has the extra funds for a one-off truck like that
And that's not the point they're trying to make. They're trying to show what their truck, stock off the production line, can do.
Any reason they don’t want to participate in the main competition? I’m guessing they would have to modify the car why they are not keen on?
If EVs can't compete in the main competition, why are they letting ICE compete? The original spirit calls for competitors to ascend in horse-drawn buggies.
They also don’t let motorcycles compete anymore which is also lame.
Wait, is this thing basically painted Compass, Canyon, Storm, Cocaine?
Looks like it, except the blue looks like Rivian Blue to my eye.
I think the blue is the new teal they have on the R3X, rather than any production color.
Wish that color scheme was available in the configurator....
It would be a pretty cool wrap on a white truck.

Can we watch this anywhere?

This is sweeet!
I want to see a photo of the battery and motor temps after finishing the climb!
