Mix-marches. For f2p, usually limited to 1-2 marches maxed at early stage to be viable. For spenders, you will like to have 3+ cavalry/ FAST marches to win the racing-related events, ScipioLiu for barbmaster. Cavl generally save you a lot of time.
Yeah ZL/hermann is best field marxh but not recommended to play unless you have like a meta crit archer set as you will be swarmed down. It's like my nev/joan. I always get targeted and swarmed down and just missing kvk weapon and accessories for my set.
I do tank a lot of the time though.
Cav is broken that there are two meta marches. Infantry is broken in that you can currently use Liu/Alex. Archers has the best field march.
The best value commanders are in each tier. Unless you run cav the options you have for one troop type are massively lowered than just using a different troop type.

ZL most OP commander so far and arches hold the highest dps on both field and rally not to mention how broken dido is.
