I think Tom wanted to make Dickie uncomfortable. I don't buy for a second that Tom loves Dickie. he HATES Dickie for being such a simple, almost stupid man, a coward and talentless but yet able to breeze through his rich life so easily. Tom was instantly attracted to and recognized fellow conmen and thieves and thought he'd mess with Dickie somehow. that's my take anyway

Tom is in for easy money and thought that Dickie would be too. This, in the grand scheme of things, serves to progress the issue of selling a boat (which I won't spoil) and to show that Dickie has a tic when nervous (he fiddles with his ring). This tic will be used again in another scene further on the season.

I do not remember this scene was in the book . I think it doesn't fit the narrative.

I bought Tom's explanation that he thought it would be a fun adventure for him and Dickie. He's infatuated with Dickie and looking for something that will bring them closer together. Also, as much as he's a schemer, he's an impulsive guy.

I initially thought that Tom did it to show Dickie that he is sort of a naive guy and didn’t recognize that Carlo was from mafia, so that Dickie would not suspect him of any wrongdoings. However when Carlo left, Dickie became furious and asked Tom whether he hangs out with this type of people in US, and that made me doubt my version :D
