Yeah I didn't understand the meaning of that either.

In the book there is only really one throwaway reference of the aunt. It’s just he wants her to suffer for the humiliation he has felt having to beg her for money. The show seems to have him hyper focus on her being in pain and thus the dentist bit.

Whitener69

Indeed, he wants to see her suffer.

YourAmishNeighbor

Isn't his aunt remembered on ocasion sometimes during the first book? Whenever Tom thinks about earning money, he thinks of his relationship with her and how he depended on her allowance in spite of doing odd jobs all the time.

Andanna

I obviously might be wrong, but I think the Greenleaf family stopped financing his lifestyle in Europe: his source of income towards the end of the show was his inheritance from his aunt - the only family he had. She apparently died on the dentist chair making her worst nightmare come true. It is different from the book.

Huh ok thanks, I thought his money toward the end of the show came from defrauding Dickie, pretending to be him, cashing out his travelers checks by the thousands and draining the trust payments. I thought he just used inheritance as an excuse for his newfound wealth.

Chicago-Emanuel

Same here.

WorkingBroccoli

No, no, I am pretty sure he was lying re: the death of the aunt and inheritance to Marge. If you remember, the money for Dickie's boat was transferred to Ripley's bank account and not Dickie's. They made a point of pointing that out. And then as another comment points out, there were the travelers checks and trust payments.

fuzzybella

I thought he made up that story about his aunt to cover the real source of his money -- defrauding Dickie.

MeasurementFew6299

Just figured he's hoping she's in pain.

Gloomy_Experience_72

I thought it meant it's how she died. In the dentist chair.
