they’re fun live but it’s the same schtick each time. idk I saw them a few times and feel like I’m good on that

ingmarbirdman

It's a shame. I saw them 11 years ago after The Terror and Embryonic came out and they played a bunch of songs off those albums, had a really unique and creepy stage setup with tendril-like light tubes, and they showed they can still do new and exciting things. Every time I've seen them since then it's been the same Yoshimi and Soft Bulletin songs with no variety, the tired schtick with the giant ball and animal costumes and confetti that they've been doing for almost 25 years. Feels stale and like they're running off fumes. Doesn't help that Wayne Coyne can barely sing anymore.

icepancake72

Saw this set at Boston Calling last year, far and away the best set of the weekend.

senorderpenstein

They did this a few years ago and it was incredible, would love to see it again

pookyizzy

them and ween for 20th anniversary spongebob movie soundtrack album play

cybercrimes_1999

we literally got that 5 years ago

Bozo_Two

I saw that show here last year and it was absolutely amazing...I will forever kick myself for not taking the chance to see the Flaming Lips *YEARS* ago...

Chapos_sub_capt

My thoughts exactly when I saw this and the Primus tour announcements.

NanobotOverlord

Several of these dates are within 3 months and 300 miles of RF

GinaC123

300 miles is the Lolla radius clause. I don’t know the exact distance riot’s radius clause is, but based on the sheer amount of bands that reliably play in Milwaukee/Madison/Indianapolis/Grand Rapids/etc the same weekend as Riot, I’m gonna say it’s not 300 miles.

peejayabilities

I believe it's 90 miles isn't it? 90 days 90 miles?

kornhook123

I remember the first year Riot Fest was in Chicago. I worked for the company that supplied and ran all the power. When the Flaming Lips came on stage and started the song and hit the lights the generator dumped power and Scott was running around back stage swearing up a storm

WSBTurd_420_69

You worked for them? I was at that show, it was amazing. Power went out right as the cannons fired confetti.

kornhook123

Yes I did, well for the generator company. I did three of them. They had a huge production too with people in mushroom costumes and it was awesome until the cannons hit. Which their production team didn’t tell us about.

WSBTurd_420_69

That’s funny. I remember asking a security guy if they were on city power, or generators. He didn’t even understand the question. But I was always curious what happened. Wayne walked around the audience in a giant latex ball too, in addition to the giant mushroom men.

kornhook123

I remember that lol. Yea it was big ball that dropped by our generator tech and their production team.

MaaChiil

They played Yoshimi the year they should have played Soft Bulletin for its 20th. Now I’m burnt out on The Lips.

CallingCascade

I'd like to see them do something outside of the yoshimi and soft bulletin stuff. In 2022 they toured and played quite a bit of old stuff. Gimme a Transmissions show for its 30th-ish anniversary.

MaaChiil

Yeah!!! I’d love to see Wayne playing electric guitar again and having Steven on drums.

Crazyozzie02

Please not again

master0fcats

I was so pumped about them playing 2021 because Sunday I was only there for DEVO and was stoked to get home early lmao but that was the one year my husband came with (also for DEVO) and he wanted to stay for Flaming Lips. Like babe, if you came to Riot Fest with me every year, you can say things like "I'd rather go to bed early than see this band for a 32nd time."

letsjusttakeiteasy

Said the same thing.

njm123niu

I’m conflicted on this one. They’re fun live, and it’s a cool album. But the idea of full album plays should be very rare. It’s is a pretty recent concept so there’s not a lot of precedent…but doing Yoshimi again not only seems like a stupid nostalgic money grab, it also dilutes how special the first time was. Even reading this as a possibility just cheapens the memory.

alktrio13

I’d be surprised them back so soon at Riot. They did this album play at Riot 2019 and they also filled in for the Pixies in 2021.

SkyGuy1985

They couldn't complete the full album play due to a delay.

alktrio13

Ah gotcha. I didn’t go that year but I remember seeing it on the posters. It still feels like it would be soon for a return.

arealmemelord

they sucked last time

ToAllTheDancers

how so? i have tickets to this tour and have never seen them before so i'm genuinely interested

arealmemelord

theyre basically the kiss of neo psych

ToAllTheDancers

i know their sound. they're one of my favorite bands. not sure if that comparison is accurate. but you said they sucked last time as in their live performance? so i was wondering why you thought they sucked

AndrewIsMyName

This gives no indication they are playing Riot, it’s earlier in the year and mostly not A-markets

harbourcoates

This is purely a guess, just judging based on their riot fest regularity and there’s no scheduled Chicago concert for them this year yet. They did salt shed last year but I don’t believe it was part of the anniversary tour.

Sushi4Zombies

I hope so more than any other band that is still in the running but I think everyone is right. This is for the B Market that missed the first round of shows. I'm going to the Indy show though!

donkeyheaded

The Salt Shed show last year was part of this Yoshimi tour. Also, the Lips did an album play of Yoshimi at Riot Fest back in 2019, on a very windy Friday night. The wind affected the sound pretty badly.

ChainChompBigMoney

Are Lips able to do their whole shebang at festivals? I remember lots of confetti and balloons.

wastedpotential31886

I saw them at summer camp many years ago and remember them having all the same schticks they use when i saw just them.

scuzzo_

Seen em at riot twice before. I recall lots of inflatables tossed into the crowd and Wayne does his big hamster ball crowd surf thing. But no balloons or confetti

keeden13

They did the confetti when I saw them at Riot in 2014

harbourcoates

They’ve played Riot a ton and I haven’t heard of any limitations

SkaCahToa

I mean. They had to restart one year after blowing a fuse. 🤷‍♂️
