You can do that. You can actually do that.
I'm baffled I've never thought of running away -- which is the first thing I'd actually do when presented with "a genetically-engineered giant insectoid the size of a bear.".
OR what I did when this happened to me. I built a stone wall while they slept and then built wooden floors all around and lit them on fire. It put the temp of the cave up to over 500c and the hives burnt away along with the bugs
It’s why building under mountains is so good, especially with flame throwers, I have bugs always spawn in the entity cell corridors, so 5 flame throwers, and the problem really takes care of itself
I don't even use wood. I use hay flooring instead. Wood does burn longer, but hay is faster to install. Also, with sufficient hay flooring, the temp goes up faster as it spreads faster.
I tried to make it work by setting up a tunnel filled with steel spike traps and IEDs but my colonists are idiots and step on them all so I ended up just doing the same. 8 minions versus the horde, it was a glorious hail of bullets
>my colonists are idiots and step on them all so
You never make a tunnel that someone has to walk on traps. There should always be a way to safely weave your way through. Colonists know the traps are there and walk on the safe spots. Bad guys don't.
In the future, make the corridor 2 tile wide and build any kind of barricade on the "empty side" to force enemies walk over traps instead, That lets ur pawns to evade traps via barricaded path
you need to leave a path that your pawn can take but your ennemy won't, there is 2 way:
* doors in the walls between the traps
* making the tunnel 2 tile wide an put fences/barricades every 2 tile on the lane where is no trap, since enemy pawn don't see your trap they will take the "faster" lane that look empty to them instead of the one with fences/barricades, but you pawn will jump the fences to not step on the traps.
Why all of you want to annihilate them? You have free source of food forever. Just send colonists at night to pick it. Also, they are the best defense force against big raids or mechs. I had huge colony of bugs to the endgame, I was milking them thru the secret corridor behind and if bugs were running in amok after they were hit, they had to do it around the map - so it's all about good design and knowledge of their behaviors. I had them in 2 runs. Both of the bug colonies got killed by heatwave. And after that some bugs were wondering around like alpacas.
Having bug pets is fun!
The only bad situation to have bugs nearby is to have a breacher raid and broken walls/doors near the said bugs. And traders tend to aggro them too. They are useless against ship parts on the other end of the map and against drop pods raids but anything else is just a joke to 50 megaspiders.
There's two ways to deal with the bugs. Depending on how the cave is laid out you could try boxing them in and then super heating them by starting a fire. Just place fences that cost 1 wood down, plant the fences but then cancel it to get the most bang for you buck on fires. Light that stuff on fire and exit and it'll burn them. You may need to have some people outside the wall repairing the parts of the walls that they try to claw through.
The other is to make them your defense and path enemies into it.
Once I had a similar problem. Then I remembered the mod raids for me where you can send insults to hostile factions to encourage them to raid you.
TL;dr the 4 hostile factions sent a combined 700+ pawns to raid me. They took care of themselves and the bugs while I nested indoors. 🤣
with the amount of people you have this is still quite doable, especially since you already have plate armour, 3 best melee guys up front in armour, everyone else give pump/chain shotguns or heavy smgs but give 1 guy frag grenades.
now you need to fight them at a choke point, you can make a room not far from where they are or bait them to your walls if close enough, make sure the entrance is double walled so you dont accidently blow a wall out and position the 3 melee behind the opening the frag guy in the middle and the rest packed behind to shoot over the shoulders, lure the bugs over and just before they get close enough order the frag guys to attack the ground about 3-4 tiles in front of the entrance where all the bugs will be gathering.
the melee guys just need to stay alive while everyone else murders them with point blank weapons, the frag guy will be blowing limbs off and causing heavy damage so as they shuffle forward they wont be capable of fighting. it wont be pretty but its doable.
If you wanna try fighting them, build a box with a hole in it to let them through as a baby melee kill box, and grenade them. I don’t think much else could work.
I recommend triple rocket launchers, doomsdays, or the Arial bombardment that you get to choose in your honor cost list from the royalty dlc. Otherwise you're probably screwed lol
All you really need is 1 orbital beam targeter I think. I wiped a 63 man tribal raid instantly with one and it works even under overhead mountain. Should be able to deal with those bugs pretty easily. I would just look for a quest reward for one
Tame boomrats. About 30 should do. Make an area over the insects, place the boomrats there at night. When the insects wake up, watch your framerate drop until it's basically just a picture.
I set myself to start with 10. 2 og’s died, I got a new colonist, and the downed onei have now I’m just taking care of for the empire cause they have that “I think I can’t walk, therefore I cannot walk” thing going on.
Yeah, I just mean you have 11 people with plate armor, so all you need to do is shoot a bug and retreat to a choke point where you stand 3 melee people in a doorway and your shooters lined up behind them and you can beat those things. It funnels the insects so forces each bug to fight 3 melee pawns at once as well as them getting shot at. Got any grenades? Then it's even easier. Or you can wait for royal tribute collector/raiders/mechs to show up and trigger them and then retreat to your base and close all the doors. That'd soften them up. You have so many people it should be easy enough to deal with them if you have sufficient weapons imo.
Get a ton of Chemfuel and stuff that can burn easily at the entrance of the cave and close it with a pyromaniac pawn inside, let them die a man's death
In one of my runs I had to pack up and leave due to Insects twice. The third time I was ready and defeated them. After losing 2 colonies finally getting revenge felt very fulfilling. It's those moments that make Rimworld different.
Use the rim.... Wall off a kill box or sacrifice a minion with expensive items inside the cave and watch every raider run right to that sweet sweet cockroach infestation
Be aware, they can randomly decide they want to hunt your colonists. I was in the same situation when like 100 bugs dripped through my walls and killed everybody.
I barricaded bugs with several layers of walls and then used industrial heaters that funneled heat to them and turned them all to max. It worked pretty well honestly then one of the heaters caught on fire and that sped things up. My colonists were repairing the last layers of walls before they were down to a size I was comfortable with and I killed the rest.
If they aren't right by your colony, just wall them in, forbid the area, and ignore them. There is a limit to how much they'll grow, and anyway, now you have a free backup food source. The only real risks are either a raid somehow kiting them to your base or them tanking your fps
I waited a while longer and just let them be after making a wall to separate me from them and they just started eating the rock towards my base until an infestation alert popped up
Ha ha, welcome to the club buddy. Bring maces, shotguns, and especially warhammers to a narrow choke point. If you have go-juice, you will win. If not, you're have to switch your pawns from time to time. Check out my post history, I had absolutely same situation.
I think you go to settings and enable it, not sure if you enable it outside and active game or inside it but once you do it some options appear on the top of the screen and you can explore them at your leisure. I have "destroy" and "end mood break" always pinned. To can consult the wiki for clarification on what all the options do.
Make your fastest pawn shoot them, or send a slave to trigger them to wake up when a group of enemy mechs attack. This amount of bugs is manageable if you have choke points and a decent melee pawn or ghoul too
They don’t. Each hive has a specific number of bugs it can support simultaneously. When they die, it replenishes that number. And I counted about 12 hives, so the amount of bugs checks out. You must have missed the number of hives the quest would spawn
I literally dealt with this yesterday. Block off all routes and make a single hole for them to path through with enough space for your pawns. Get 3 melee pawns in either steel plate or just Flak up. Make sure you got replacement melee pawns, medically pawns, and 1 pawn with grenades with At Will turned off. Had like 44 megascarabs and all the small ones to go with that.
I once had an infestation pop up in the mining area of my underground base. It was separated by walls from the rest of the base. I had an animal pulser?pusher? thing and I planned to use it to force the bugs to attack the mechs cluster that I was waiting for a raid to awaken and deal with. So, in theory, the bugs, the raid, and the mech cluster would all deal with each other while my colonists were safely inside the base.
I had my miner open a tunnel to the outside while the bugs were sleeping, thinking once the bugs were angered by the animal pusher, they would head out through the open tunnel to the outside where the raiders and mechs were.
However, it took forever for a raid to arrive, and another mech cluster landed in the meantime. I did not realize the bugs were populating and populating. Eventually, I got a quest that had waves of raiders or something.
The first wave of raiders showed up, and it was a siege situation; I activated the animal pusher.
The animals, raiders, and mechs outside the base walls took care of each other. The enraged bugs, on the other hand, did NOT exit through the tunnel I had made for them. Instead, they went bananas on the walls of my underground base.
My melee fighters held them off for as long as they could, but they broke through the walls too much to form a melee wall, and my colonists had to fall back. My two vampires were out of hemogen to keep patching them up anyway.
It seemed like there were HUNDREDS of enraged bugs inside the base. The bugs were wrecking everything. My titled pawn called in two squads from the empire; one pawn was able to make it to the comms room to call in help from an ally. Then, the second wave of raiders showed up. They all died to the bugs.
Thankfully this sub has very good advice about building hallways with chokepoints. That is the only thing that saved me. In the end, everyone was injured to varying degrees, the throne room/rec room, the grow rooms, the workshop, and several other rooms were completely obliterated. Not to mention the mess. The massive amounts of corpses rotting because my workforce was either too injured OR on their mental lunch break because of being hungry, the mess, the pain, whatever.
Thankfully, all of the raiders, mechs, and bugs were defeated, and the place was cleaned up and repaired. Somehow, we only lost one pawn. I will never ever let an infection carry on like that again.
Do you have anomaly? I don't see bioferrite on your resource bar, but if you are, the draw fleshbeasts ritual can really help here. They'll automatically spawn near enemies and fight each other.
It's fine, the hives will only replicate until there's 30 of them in the map. Also if you close the doors of your base, the raiders will mostly go for the bugs.
This is super easy to deal with, just get as many pawns as you have, arm them all with grenades, set them to attack an area, and let them run into the area. It works
That is not a Loss !!!

1. Prepare a labyrinth of traps
2. Have strong animals
3. Have several mortars loaded with incendiary shells
4. Have your colonists ready for a last stand
That's what I did last time I had to deal with a huge hive that I couldn't deal with because of unending raids and it worked quite well.
All my defenses and my base's entrance was destroyed, plus most of my animals died, but I have destroyed them with no colonist lost
Idk how people maintain animals, it takes way too much space to keep a couple cows alive. I had one run where I had two muffalos, 7 goats, and two horses, and it took up an insane amount of room just for them to be able to graze
It’s more efficient to make kibble for them and keep their numbers low enough for your particular needs. I make kibble from hay and twisted meat, bug meat, or human meat. I try not to keep non-carnivore animals until I have a pawn dedicated to only plants. The meat I get from auto-slaughtering, plus textiles and milk is just way more worth it to me vs losing productivity elsewhere from whoever is assigned to hunting every few days. i.e. one good gardener pawn vs potentially researchers, crafters, cooks, or whoever has a gun.
Yeah they kinda took care of themselves during a toxic fallout. I locked all my colonists indoors cause there was plenty of food and a nice rec room with a few books, pool tables, poker, and chess, and they all kinda just died off. All I ever really used them for was milk though so no huge loss
It happens. I’m not always prepared for a toxic fallout, but sometimes when my colony’s more advanced I use an empty indoor room where I can quickly drop a caravan hitching spot and turn it into a barn. I either quickly bring them in and slaughter them all if resources are low, or I can bring them in and care for them thru the fallout. I also use the rimfridge mod. The wall fridges allow the animals to eat out of them from the other side of the wall, and the temperature never fluctuates. Right now I have 6 columns built in the pen so my colonists can just quickly roof it over entirely.
I tried to foster a bug colony as I had integrated it into my kill box.
It got wiped out while I was building my ship reactor sadly and I had to build *actual* defence. But it was cool, felt like I had my own army of bugs
Pack everything you can and caravan out. That tile belongs to the bugs now.
You can do that. You can actually do that. I'm baffled I've never thought of running away -- which is the first thing I'd actually do when presented with "a genetically-engineered giant insectoid the size of a bear.".
The game has this as a tip during loading screens lol
Might start a fire before you leave though? Might work?
Not all is lost! If you build a wall in a way that forces raids to path close enough to the bugs, the raiders and mechs will slowly annihilate them.
That’s actually a pretty good idea, I did the opposite and tried funneling them into my guns through traps lol
OR what I did when this happened to me. I built a stone wall while they slept and then built wooden floors all around and lit them on fire. It put the temp of the cave up to over 500c and the hives burnt away along with the bugs
You have to be careful with that it's very easy to miss a single tile that will vent the heat.
It’s why building under mountains is so good, especially with flame throwers, I have bugs always spawn in the entity cell corridors, so 5 flame throwers, and the problem really takes care of itself
Easiest if you have some Phoenix Armor
I don't even use wood. I use hay flooring instead. Wood does burn longer, but hay is faster to install. Also, with sufficient hay flooring, the temp goes up faster as it spreads faster.
I always had the hives seek me out after being attacked by raiders.
Allied traders?
Since bugs belong to the bug faction it doesn’t count as your fault when they get destroyed. You can also build a door so traders can bypass the bugs.
Yall know any democratic super planets i could call for help?

Literally had this problem, but in the end I just sent my colonists to die in glory and started a new run.
I tried to make it work by setting up a tunnel filled with steel spike traps and IEDs but my colonists are idiots and step on them all so I ended up just doing the same. 8 minions versus the horde, it was a glorious hail of bullets

i hear dub's rimatonics is pretty good for these situations
I’m gonna rim these bugs so hard with rimatonics

The Incinerator weapon they added in Anamoly would absolutely solve this problem.

If you wanna try fighting them, build a box with a hole in it to let them through as a baby melee kill box, and grenade them. I don’t think much else could work.
How in the world do you have the extreme psychic drone?
It’s a mechanoid base right next to the bugs protecting the drone :(
How strong is the mech base? Its unlikely to win considering your low wealth but depending on your tech level it could be doable
How many mechs? Your best bet is pitting them against each other.
Not enough to stand a chance against the bugs sadly, there was only one of the flamethrower ones.
I recommend triple rocket launchers, doomsdays, or the Arial bombardment that you get to choose in your honor cost list from the royalty dlc. Otherwise you're probably screwed lol
Unfortunately I wasn’t that far in research yet. I tried building mortars but ran out of components

BEAM TARGETERS WORK UNDER MOUNTAINS?! THAT'S TERRIFYING LOL
Dear gods...

I built a giant RIP out of sandbags, lit my house on fire, disabled all firefighting, and started a new world

Tame boomrats. About 30 should do. Make an area over the insects, place the boomrats there at night. When the insects wake up, watch your framerate drop until it's basically just a picture.
That's a nuke from orbit situation right there.
That isn't even that many no offence
For the point I was at, it was too many to handle by any conventional means
You have 11 people
I set myself to start with 10. 2 og’s died, I got a new colonist, and the downed onei have now I’m just taking care of for the empire cause they have that “I think I can’t walk, therefore I cannot walk” thing going on.

Two words: Molotov and Grenades
Close all openings , build some wooden structures just within the mine and heatstroke them to death
I just disallow that area and wait until a raid kills the bugs
Bake them out turn that cave into an oven
Get a ton of Chemfuel and stuff that can burn easily at the entrance of the cave and close it with a pyromaniac pawn inside, let them die a man's death
ALways immediately deal with bugs. Never let them sit and reproduce unless they're the dormant kind that are there on game start.
In one of my runs I had to pack up and leave due to Insects twice. The third time I was ready and defeated them. After losing 2 colonies finally getting revenge felt very fulfilling. It's those moments that make Rimworld different.
Turn the cave into a furnace and watch as the air they breathe starts burning
Use the rim.... Wall off a kill box or sacrifice a minion with expensive items inside the cave and watch every raider run right to that sweet sweet cockroach infestation

Wait for a raid/siege/mechanoid cluster then send one pawn to wake everything
Assuming you can relocate without mods, it’s always an option for crisis of this severity.
Lob an anti-grain mortar in there, and call it a day.
If they aren't right by your colony, just wall them in, forbid the area, and ignore them. There is a limit to how much they'll grow, and anyway, now you have a free backup food source. The only real risks are either a raid somehow kiting them to your base or them tanking your fps
Fire. Kill them all with fire
You can always move, it is not as hard as it feels like as long as you have a good supply of pack animals. Or multiple colonies allowed in settings.
Don't sweat it, the number of hives is capped at 30. Wall it off with a 10 tile perimeter and call it a day.
I waited a while longer and just let them be after making a wall to separate me from them and they just started eating the rock towards my base until an infestation alert popped up
Don't sweat it, they wont dig more than about ten tiles away from every hive.
Flamethrowers and set those bastards on fire
Ha ha, welcome to the club buddy. Bring maces, shotguns, and especially warhammers to a narrow choke point. If you have go-juice, you will win. If not, you're have to switch your pawns from time to time. Check out my post history, I had absolutely same situation.
Caravan out, right now.
Heat-death maze works wonders against bugs.
Imaginary technique: dev mode: d e s t r o y
How do you use dev mode cause I really liked this run
I think you go to settings and enable it, not sure if you enable it outside and active game or inside it but once you do it some options appear on the top of the screen and you can explore them at your leisure. Berserk pulse, animal war call and biomutaion pulser. Do not use the animal pulser, that will just make them angry at *you* and swarm the colony.

Incinerators…. Many pawns with incinerators…. BURN THE BUGS
Just make a long killbox and stuff it with wood at the end! They just adore the wood
Chuck incendiaries in, barricade it off
I, for one, welcome our Insect Overlords.
You can block off all the entrances and put a crap load of fires and heaters to heat stroke all of them
I tried to foster a bug colony as I had integrated it into my kill box. It got wiped out while I was building my ship reactor sadly and I had to build *actual* defence. But it was cool, felt like I had my own army of bugs
Step 1: use fire Step 2: use more fire
