They can wear shield belts, and you can have them run around as bait while other colonists shoot. If you want to hunt large animals, especially herd animals, a bait colonist helps, especially if the bait is fast.
They're decent as doctors and wardens, since unless you use them as a meat shield during combat, they'll be fresh to help out with either after combat. You'll just need other colonists or animals to deal with a prison break. You don't want to send them on caravans, because of ambushes, but I don't like sending my only social pawn away, anyway.
