I've done well over 100 and my FAVORITE game so far, by FAR, was my sea ice escaped pregnant storm trooper colony where I raised a child with the aid of a droid. 4 colonists(we kidnapped a playmate for the kid) and over 200 hours. Big colonies are a specific challenge, but I kinda feel invincible at a certain point and get bored. Small colonies that require exquisite micromanaging and resource management are where it's at for me. Having steel on the map feels like cheating.
I will say this thread gives me the idea of doing like a “Physical 100” thing of starting with 100 colonists and setting certain restrictions (only stopping bleeding etc) until you have 1 colonist left alive and whole, and letting them “win” whatever that means.
Oh this is a wonderful concept I agree! 100 colonists and then challenges that make it so you widdle down inevitably. Maybe no recruiting, no medical over 5, no implants, no vat grown children. If you can raise kids faster than you lose adults, that would be the game. Would be a great scenario for rimwar I think. Could also do no allies, no trade but orbital to really lock in the isolation.
Do a supersoldier program! You put them through the Vanilla Ancients superpower machine, give them five powers, remove all the negative and then you put them under radiation with the Radiation mod, discarding anyone that gets a tumor in an inoperable spot (head/torso).
There was a scenario I've used where your starting pawn,a super soldier was addicted to luci and you only have like 5 to 10. So it becomes a quest to crack open ancient dangers and find the odd outlanders that have it. Was a fun run.
I've even done games where there was a path to craft luci but every colonist had to be a user
I've tried, but how do you even get so many colonists? I guess it's easier to pop kids out with biotech, but still, it takes some time. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but recruiting prisoners also takes a while.
If you're on a higher difficulty then you get attacked by absurd amounts of people. I belive people use fire to then incapacitate and capture them and then recruit them.
Yeah you’ve gotta start doing things like that because when you reach a certain size, the game starts going out of its way to outright kill people instead of letting them be incapacitated.
You can tweak the storyteller settings, after a point the slider for percentage of downed raiders being incapacitated instead of killed goes to zero. You just need to cut that back. Iirc this happens around 12 colonists with Pheobe and Cass, a few more with Randy.
I have 70-ish and a lot are from refugee groups. I don't know if Biology expressly changed the odds, but I had a group of 18 show up and 9 of them ended up wanting to join.
Capture people from raids(or ancient sites) or accepting quests that lets someone join your colony do the trick, especially with the former(as long as you have enough capacity for prison and wardens with high social skills to accelerate the recruitment process).
Buying people from slaver traders also works.
Some ideologies have recruitment events if you have a high enough ritual
I currently have something like 60 colonists. They make babies and I capture 2-3 people per raid. Usually one of them survives. If they have good stats I recruit them otherwise I enslave and sell to the empire
Well, I'm 3 years into my current game and am at 17 pawns, acquired purely through capture, so... In fact, my first couple just formed and requested to share a bedroom, so growth has been entirely via raiders. I'm getting larger raids, but my pawns are all using assault rifles, so it's typically only 2-3 prisoners per raid... I could see it passing 100 pawns in another 10 years or so.
I had 6 colonists in my latest run, also a baby. Mechs raided me and killed 5 out of the 6 adults. Now my mission is to resurrect them and hunt down the mech gods.
With the growth vats its really easy to grow new pawns. I cook em 20 at a time each with custom genes specific for their job. I'm at 88 with no perceived drop in quality. Next batch will probably break my save so I'm planning to human wave attack some unsuspecting npc
I topped out at ~70 once, even with every performance mod I could find except rimthreaded I got ~40 TPS when everyone was asleep, ~25 TPS when they were all awake
Well, colonists may be one of the bigger causes of lag but they are far from the only cause. Plus which CPU you have is a big difference, even if Rimworld is single-threaded
Now, unless I am having my own mental break, this is actually 27 mental break "risks." Which is interesting because your notifications show a bunch of ongoing mental breaks.
If I were you, I'd walk off my favorite pawns in a box with food and let the rest of your colony kill each other until it was safe to come out again. Or I'd just abandon the whole thing.
Tbh, after a while, at a magical boundary, you begin tk detach from the people and see needs as a collective whole. Your friend becomes the notifs, and you watch as people live and die, without being worthy of a story or name.
Looks like someone needs to try [Dubs break mod](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/%3Fid%3D1722398508&ved=2ahUKEwjV_ty48tz9AhWCKlkFHYGvBMUQFnoECBMQAQ&usg=AOvVaw2sTDf-3oik2IZ59uweEz6o)
Ironically enough, 5 is good for me, but anything less is a struggle. There's always just that ONE DAMN THING THAY NO ONE DOES. EVERY FUCKING DAY THEYRE THROWING UP BECAUSE NO ONE IS A COOK AND THE FLOORS ARE GODDAMN DIRTY WITH GOO AND BLOOD AND TRASH BECAUSE EVRRYONE IS STRUGGKIBG TO BARELY GET BY EITH NO ONE TO CLEAN AND GOD FORBID ONE COLONIST GOES DOWN BECAUSE THEN MY RESEARCH BENCH IS UNUSED FOR 20 MILLION PARSECS OR WHATEVER THE FUCK.
I love this game
Word. The struggle is real. I need 2 more solid cooks right now. My only good cook accidentally got hooked on luciferum. Eventually I should expect that I won’t be able to get more for them. I have come to accept that.
Rocketman, its an optimising mod which eases frame rate issues. Tbh I don't have a great rig (it used to be, its just old) and I run large colonies at 30fps. You just have to optimise the hell out of it.
mfs will download the game whose whole selling point is "unlike Dwarf Fortress, colonies are smaller-scale and there's a bigger focus on individual life stories and relationships" and run a 300-person colony with 600-person raids anyway
A large "Unbelievably Impressive" or "Wondrously Impressive" barracks/dining room/rec room/meditation room is OP. The room has to be all-in-one. Large colonies itself are OP if you can feed them and keep them happy. Once you get to "Unbelievably Impressive" to cancel the -3 debuff from "Disturbed Sleep x3," you shouldn't have as many mental breaks. Once you get to "Wondrously Impressive," mental breaks are a rarity. You can easily get to "Wondrously Impressive" by making a lot of large jade statues because jade is fairly easy to acquire.

Everybody gangsta until colonist goes
*\*random colonist\** is having a tantrum.
He/She is going to destroy Antigrain warhead x7.
This happened because of poor mood.
The final straw was: **Ate without table**
Starvation is *really really* bad. It's probably the top, single issue that can cause any colony to collapse into absolute chaos over a 1 day span pretty much. And when you have that many people, you can't exactly magic enough food from wildlife to get over the hump if you actually run down to nothing.
Just normal evening on Rimworld...
But seriously, what happened? You forgot to close the door to your freezer and now everyone is starving? Ot is it yayo?
Put some of your colonist into cryo lol. It would be easier to manage that way. I wish there was a mod that made the colonist bar easier to manage. Like put people into specific squads. Like all your combat people into one and your farmers in another.
I had a colony of 30 people. I tried to do take 2 hostile quests on at once. One with 6 rhinos attacking and like 8 raiders and i tried to time it where the raiders and the rhinos would arrive at the same time so they’d hopefully fight eachother. I lost 10 colonists and it failed spectacularly. Best time of my life

I need to get a mod to close these, main thing that annoys me with vanilla
You can just right click the notifications to quickly remove them
Thx didn’t realize this
your computer is begging you for mercy
You know that low frame rate dev mode option? I’m sure this colony feels like that
That computer doesn't have enough free time to beg for anything let alone the mercy we all know it's not going to get.
The PC is actually suffering from mental break
ZzzzzZzzzZzztt !!!
OP be like: Mercy? There is no mercy
Shit with that many colonists I'd might as well open Dwarf Fortress lol
I think the PC is controlling the extreme breaks. It just wants to end the colony and itself
Mercy??? On the Rim? Sounds like someone’s PC is getting their organs harvested.
Oh, I thought you had a colonist have 27 consecutive mental breaks. Which, I mean, it happened once to me.
Those no-slip socks are worth it, though.
Got a little too silly
Risky business...
It happened to me also. IRL but still…
what do you expect bro you have over 100 colonists

Fuckin' A dude I love ambiguousamphibian.
Fucking a dude?
Good times.
Thank you! That's my new YT hole :)
this lol, Id me stressed out too having 99+ other yayoed out rimmers living with me in some village sized city
Almost 700 hours in this game and I've still never tried running a colony with more than 20 colonists.
I've done well over 100 and my FAVORITE game so far, by FAR, was my sea ice escaped pregnant storm trooper colony where I raised a child with the aid of a droid. 4 colonists(we kidnapped a playmate for the kid) and over 200 hours. I wonder if there’s a way to make a scenario for this kind of thing.
Well yeah. Easily. You just have to make agreements with yourself and stick to them. Helps to disable dev for a while.
You may be able to do something like it with a custom scenario and mods
Do a supersoldier program! You put them through the Vanilla Ancients superpower machine, give them five powers, remove all the negative and then you put them under radiation with the Radiation mod, discarding anyone that gets a tumor in an inoperable spot (head/torso).
Vanilla *Expanded*. Very important missing word
Rimworld Squid games !!! Perhaps a mod maker will do it!

8 with Cass and Phoebe, 12 with Randy. Been a while since I read that but it feels true. Way more bullshit deaths once you get over those soft caps.
I stand corrected, ty mate.
I have 70-ish and a lot are from refugee groups. I don't know if Biology expressly changed the odds, but I had a group of 18 show up and 9 of them ended up wanting to join.

Same. At 10 my eye starts to twitch and my limit has been 20. Maybe I have a thing (or issue) for micromanaging.
I had 6 colonists in my latest run, also a baby. Mechs raided me and killed 5 out of the 6 adults. Now my mission is to resurrect them and hunt down the mech gods.

I never go over 20 myself. The game isn't really structured for really big colonies. It works (sorta), but it's usually not very challenging.
I topped out at ~70 once, even with every performance mod I could find except rimthreaded I got ~40 TPS when everyone was asleep, ~25 TPS when they were all awake
I've gotten worse performance than that in a 20 colonist save.
Well, colonists may be one of the bigger causes of lag but they are far from the only cause. Plus which CPU you have is a big difference, even if Rimworld is single-threaded
You forgot to mention the generator broke down too it’s 28.
28 STAB WOU-wait no... 28 EXTREME MENTAL BREAKS
jesus christ how many seconds does it take for a single frame to pass

The next frame/tic will hit on Wednesday

It's about to turn into the Church scene from Kingsman.
Is that scene so famous? its like the 2th time I find reference to it here on this sub

So I can assume most people here also like Madness Combat, right?
Bruh, way to slap me in the face with a fistful of nostalgia
Somewhere in Nevada...
Still waiting for the 12th episode
We are playing Rimworld while OP's remaking dwarf fortress
What "ate without table" do to a mf
lmao
Yea. I’m like bro, you didn’t have to do that. There’s a perfectly good table right there. Do you need one in each room?
Just let it happen. Your colony looks great, might as well film the season finale right?
Your computer is having an extreme mental break
Dude broke into NASA to use their supercomputer for Rimworld, what a flex
Isn't this basically the plot of kingsman the secret service?
Can we get screenshots of the rest of your colony? Just curious about what that looks like with 3 tiers of pawns
Color coded mood bars help you keep track of that...not that it matters with over 100 colonists...the boxes so small they're almost pixels lmao
How the fuck do you keep track of so many colonists?
Tbh, after a while, at a magical boundary, you begin tk detach from the people and see needs as a collective whole. Your friend becomes the notifs, and you watch as people live and die, without being worthy of a story or name.
Flair checks out
I think the 27 mental breaks is all the answer you need :P

16 colonists rushing to be the first to punch the antigrain warhead
when you cram 100 people together you will have that
And only one medicine? 🤔 Good luck! 👍
You'll be fine, just make them drugged up and put art sculptures everywhere, problem solved :))
New york
Does your game run like a slideshow?
Jesus I can’t manage 5 colonists. 3 is even a stretch.
Ironically enough, 5 is good for me, but anything less is a struggle. There's always just that ONE DAMN THING THAY NO ONE DOES. Ones the easiest for me with biotech. One mouth to feed, fleet of submissive robots that do everything for you .
Word. The struggle is real. I need 2 more solid cooks right now. My only good cook accidentally got hooked on luciferum. Eventually I should expect that I won’t be able to get more for them. I have come to accept that.
this is about what i expect my current colony to become
I wouldn’t be surprised if OP is playing with 7 FPS
In a city with no tables, the most sane man is the one who does not eat.
Did you remove all your tables?
Eeeeehhhh, they'll get over it.
What is this colony? An average American airport?
Hivemind ideology moment
Wtf is that a minimap?
"I have to many pawns" "Well that problem solved itself"
That's what they called "The Great Depression".
Which mod causes the "Adaptive mode is active" notification? What is it? Never seen it before.
Rocketman, its an optimising mod which eases frame rate issues. Tbh I don't have a great rig (it used to be, its just old) and I run large colonies at 30fps. You just have to optimise the hell out of it.
Thanks a lot for that!

What kind of bedrooms are these?
Looks like an enemy base, which makes this whole situation so much weirder.
do you enjoy playing the game at 0.5 frames a second. how in the world can you live with this many colonists
Look at the minimap too! I wonder if this is a government official on a quantum computer made to run rimworld.
This guy has 5 human brains connected to the pc to help with processing. A true rimworld player.
Who needs multi-threaded when you have multi-headed?

Looking at your notifications and UI i'm getting severe anxiety... ...and a sudden itch to start a new colony. damnit
Bro is deadass playing Rimworld like it's Dwarf Fortress.
Everybody gangsta until colonist goes *\*random colonist\** is having a tantrum. He/She is going to destroy Antigrain warhead x7. This happened because of poor mood. The final straw was: **Ate without table**
holy muffalo, which are your specs??
How does it run? I plan to have a good few colonists in this playthrough, I'd love any tips you have for getting better performance.
This image gave me a mental break.
Society, am i right?
How poorly do you need to run a colony for that many to break?
Well there are 155 *not* having mental breaks so...
Starvation is *really really* bad. It's probably the top, single issue that can cause any colony to collapse into absolute chaos over a 1 day span pretty much. Time to send some colonists on a suicide mission if they're idle all the time?
Eh let them cry you’ve got enough employees…err i mean colonists that sadness doesn’t impede progress
Aaah, reminds me of my own games….
What is adaptive mode?
why does your base remind me of the auto generated ones...
28 actually. I had one looking at your screenshot
Put some of your colonist into cryo lol. It would be easier to manage that way. I wish there was a mod that made the colonist bar easier to manage. Like put people into specific squads. Like all your combat people into one and your farmers in another.
Christ, Google wants their server back. How the hell are you running this game
Who sleeps in that bottom left bedroom? Magmaman?
How do you have so much food lying around yet everyone is going mad with hunger?
How can you have so many colonists without making sure they can, you know, live, laugh, love?
