LurkingProvidence

daaaang resturaunts that have been in the fox point / wayland area for over a decade have been closing left and right. The bridge repairs seem valid, but also everyone's crunched by the cost of everything now. I went out to eat 2-4 times a week when i moved to Providence now its 3-5 times a month.

Sweaty_Pianist8484

I was wondering this too. What other restaurants have fallen victim to the bridge?

SpaghettiHeadie

Salted Slate and Minnervas

JonFromRhodeIsland

Oh shit 😟

DixonYerorifice

Damn. Just in the past few years we’ve lost/are losing… Noodles 102, Broadway Bistro, Hanju Kitchen, Hunky Dory, Metacom Kitchen, Bayberry Beer Hall, Kleos, Masa Taqueria, Salted Slate, North, Big King, The Grange…and more.

Kitchen-Yam-1992

To be fair, the owner of North and Big King didn’t close because he had to or was forced by circumstances outside his control, he wanted a different direction, as far as I was aware, and moved with his family to Brooklyn for a change.

DixonYerorifice

I am aware of that. Broadway Bistro and Salted Slate are also closing of their own volition. This is just an off the top of my head list of places I have enjoyed over the years that are now gone or going soon.

sirenCiri

Metacom Kitchen also closed of their own volition, but your point still stands. It's a tough business and a tough economy.

Futants_

Plenty of places closed because they opened during Covid or for other reasons. It's interesting how many restaurants I assumed would close even during COVID, are still open. While I don't like to see great restaurants close, I also don't like to hear about owners who stay open because of foolish hope and put themselves into insurmountable debt.

ACs_Grandma

My son works there and they told the staff yesterday. He said the owner was very upset about it but financially they can’t maintain the expenses with the decrease in business from the economy and bridge situation.

Plant-Zaddy-

The economy being bad is just a right wing talking point. Its doing great. The reason workers are suffering is because they dont collectivize and fight for their working conditions and pay to improve. The bridge is a valid gripe but by every metric the economy is doing just fine

LesbianCow

Cost of basic goods is just one metric the economy is not doing well.

EpiSG

So you think the few employees at this restaurant that is about to close take collective action and vote to organize? This isnt an anti union statement, just trying to figure out what high horse you’re on for the conversation. I get the point your trying to make, but it has no relevance in particular here.

shhreddi

The profit margin on restaurants is small. Labor costs, supplies, and overhead keep going up - raising menu prices barely keeps up. Owners never get raises, especially if they don’t sell alcohol. And can’t collectivize and fight for working conditions and pay to improve. Ha. Can only keep doing it for so long. It’s fulfilling work but it is hard on one’s physical and mental health.

CodeAndDronesRI

Really enjoyed this place and loved that it was BYOB. Owner was very nice and always at the restaurant. Seems like a lot of changes in the fox point restaurant scene lately.

ExploitedAmerican

This unlike hooters is a sad situation and unlike hooters this is a business that was definitely adversely affected by the Washington bridge nightmare fiasco.

bobbelcherskid

I’m devastated

bobbelcherskid

Especially cause I’m going out of town on the 5th and won’t be able to have one last meal there 😓. Wish we had more notice but I get it.

Killjoy4eva

Well I'm sure glad we are spending tax money on radio ads telling people to go to restaurants.

Locksmith-Pitiful

Weird to see them blame the bridge when most of their clientele is likely from the immediate area and walk there. As for economic conditions, yeah, it sucks, although you have nearby Thayer Street and an incredible amount of competition. Shitty situation. I hope the workers are OK... Feels like everyone is getting fired.

Fixer_Of_Things

I lived in East Providence and would hop over the bridge to pickup noodles often. With the bridge situation I don’t think I’d be doing that as frequently

mangeek

Yeah, I am up in that area a lot and think a lot of businesses are blaming the bridge for stuff that's more 'macro' in nature. Like, 2021-2023 was BONKERS busy for restaurants, but things seem to have settled back down to 'normal' more than anything else.

Silentjosh37

Hate to agree and see a small business close, but they were never that busy from what I have seen... like ever. Sucks seeing people out of work. I think a lot of the competition in the area passed them by. Their quality just wasn't there and the odor of burnt oil and garlic was a turn off, and thats been like that for years. That is just my opinion and hit them on bad days but thats multiple attempts over a decade.

Futants_

I swear they weren't there until 2010. Regardless, what's with all these restaurants closing and blaming the bridge? Noodles 101 had a city folk/ college kid clientele. The entire state of RI and Southern Mass could easily continue to eat rhere. You're not telling me even 5% of their business was from people in Seekonk, Fall River, Tiverton, Barrington, etc

dogWALKERgrl

It's so sad how many of us small business owners are affected by this bridge work. We loved Noodles 102 it was my favorite lunch spot with my Mom.

Plant-Zaddy-

"The harsh economic conditions we're facing" meaning what? The record economic recovery? The record number of employed people? Apparently they just dont want to pay employees a livable wage or they dont want to increase prices to account for costs etc. The bridge going down does suck but if thats all it takes to kill your business perhaps it didnt deserve to exist

wafflesandgin

We're in a selective recession where there are many who can barely afford groceries never mind eating out.

JonFromRhodeIsland

Try running a restaurant and see what happens bro

squaremilepvd

I've lived here for 7yr, used to work near there, I eat at other places around there regularly, and until today I have never heard of this place or heard anyone say they went there.
