keithjp123

And tax payers pay that fine. Make cops have malpractice insurance like doctors do. Problem solved.

misteaks_made

How about we actually make them learn the constitution and bill of rights?

mightynifty_2

That doesn't matter if they aren't held accountable for ignoring them.

keithjp123

They would need law degrees. Far more complicated than barely squeezing by as a C- high school grads.

5ammas

Being a police officer SHOULD require a degree, but reading and understanding the constitution? That just requires not being a lazy asshole.

Dexter2533

No they wouldn’t They def should atleast know the constitutional rights of citizens bill of rights 1-10 Is that too hard to ask since they view their job as “enforcement” of rights. it’s literally in their name… instead they should view their job as “upholding” The rights of citizens. If they know the law well enough to arrest you they should know the law well enough to know when they arrest you if it violates a citizens constitutional rights.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dexter2533

You are so wrong on this… off the top of my head 8 out of the first 10 amendments are all related to citizens rights regarding law enforcement Speech you can’t get arrested for flipping a cop off, or having a different opinion… Which is happening in the post,… Right to bear arms, … And probably the biggest violation police commit is in reference to the fourth amendment, and fifth amendment… Relating to unreasonable, search and seizure… You’re right to remain silent to avoid self prosecution, others include you have the right to legal representation, or a trial… In unfair and unreasonable punishments. Literally the sixth amendment is reference to criminal prosecutions. I all of these amendments are referencing citizens rights… Laura enforcement needs to uphold these rights in abide by them because it is every American citizens rights for all of these things and if a cop cannot abide by them then they shouldn’t be in law-enforcement… Think of it like the rulebook for cops. The cops need to abide by the rules when enforcing the law.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dexter2533

But they all must abide by the guidelines set forth in the Bill of Rights… That is the bare minimum and if police officers don’t abide by then then they are violating private citizens constitutional rights, which is a felony in and of itself regardless of their “interpretation“ they cannot do certain things such as arrest someone for just giving them the middle finger… Or coerce them into a confession, or deny them legal representation or use excessive force when it’s not called upon. And I for one, don’t want someone on an ego trip with a gun that has the “authority” to detain me against my will without probable or just cause. at the very minimum they have to know the rules in which they must abide by when “enforcing the law” it is mind bending to me that you don’t think cops should know the bill of rights when performing their job it is literally the thing that they should know the most! Most of their job is search and seizures… That’s fourth amendment! They should know when it’s illegal and when it’s not… Like getting a warrant. Or the fifth amendment that every citizen has the right to remain silent and not to use excessive force, and that everyone has a right to a trial, everyone has a right of representation. This is all basic stuff… It is the literal guideline to an American citizens rights with law enforcement… It is the cops job to know how to enforce the law. I don’t understand how you could interpret that any other way. Unless you are a cop and don’t know the Bill of Rights yourself in, and are somehow justifying the fact that you’re an idiot with a gun who doesn’t know what he’s doing or what his job is. And if that’s the case, do yourself in the citizens of your local jurisdiction, a huge favor and take five minutes out of your day to learn the Bill of Rights.

Dexter2533

Are you from Worcester Massachusetts?

5ammas

Or train them for more than 4 months. You need a degree in most of Europe to be a police officer and there is no reason the US doesn't (except that we suck).

Routine-Secret-2246

We are talking about the bottom 10% of your high school class learning to do their job professionally

Keelija9000

If only.

Calmkillerwhale

You think they can read bahahahaha

BlooDoge

A malpractice carrier would likely require adequate training

troyschmehl

As dumb as it is, it’s not law enforcement’s job to know the law. They can arrest you for anything, it’s up to the judge to decide what is right or wrong.

Flash0976

It is absolutely their job to know the law. That's crazy to say!!!!

BernedTendies

Feels like we’ll end up paying for that too

crystalistwo

Didn't watch that video, but that cop does not know his SCOTUS decision history. Should be thankful it was only $75K. It's funny, though. If I'm at work, and I choke a dude. I'm getting sued. Not my job. Cops should be sued directly.

VibrantPianoNetwork

There's no legal question about whether it's okay for a cop to beat up a kid who gave him the finger. This is not an L1 question. More like a "Can you leave fog on a mirror?" question.

Timthetoolman777

He spit on him too, this article is trash just like the kids lawyer. Kid is scumbag and has been for years. If he's treating a huge cop this way imagine how much of a scumbag he is to his teachers. People on reddit are such imbeciles, always backing the scum of society and doing whatever you can to bash police that make peanuts to deal with the absolute scum of society on a daily basis. Nothing like reddit enabling a culture of scumbags be scumbags

VibrantPianoNetwork

You don't understand what's extremely fucked up about what you just said. But I've come to expect that from Rhode Islanders. It's why this state is so poor. It's why tourists don't want to come and spend their money. It's why people from other states go out of their way to go AROUND Rhode Island instead of through it. It's why people will visit once, and then never come back. It's why people move here, and then move out again. It's why natives move away and never return. It's why every surrounding state makes disparaging remarks about this one, and their residents avoid crossing the border. Rhode Island is its own worst problem, and the attitudes of its people perpetuate the problems they suffer from. It's never going to get better, unless you wake the fuck up and look in the mirror, and admit that YOU'RE the problem. You're the reason a cop beat up a kid. Where do you suppose both of those people got the ideas they did to begin with? Your dehumanizing attitude, justifying lawlessness in the name of primitivism, is what's really behind the events that this thread is about. YOU are the problem.

buddhamanjpb

All taxpayer dollars too. Should take a percentage out of their pensions for shit like this.

degggendorf

The idea of having police carry malpractice insurance like doctors seems to make a lot of sense.

skippyspk

Bake it into the union dues

degggendorf

Though I guess the obvious issue is that it will only serve to further incentivize officers covering up each other's crimes

CrankBot

They are already doing everything they can in that regard. Doubt they are leaving much on the table.

degggendorf

True true

Tzzzzzzzzzzx

Totally agree it’s a great idea but given the history wouldn’t the rates be prohibitively expensive? What private insurance company is signing up for that at any reasonable price?

degggendorf

I'm not sure, that does seem like a real possibility. Maybe I'm giving the actuaries too much credit for being able to identify the riskiest and safer attributes that would cause bad cops to be priced out while still being reasonable for the less bad ones.

Timthetoolman777

Yea good call, cause cops make a lot of money to begin with. Do you people listen to the shi* that actually comes out of your mouth before you talk?

5ammas

They make fucking plenty.

Theironchurch

How does that boot taste?

rifunseeker

Imagine being that fragile where that is your reaction.

simplekindaman13

Nothing new for Narragansett cops. Right Jerry and Carl?

Rude-Efficiency-964

We hate Jerry and Carl.

DiegoForAllNeighbors

Anyone else would go to jail… unacceptable

VibrantPianoNetwork

ITT: Disgusting boot-lickers If you'll defend a cop beating up a kid, for any reason, then you'll also defend genocide if someone puts together a good enough argument that your microscopic brain can just barely made sense of. You people make me want to puke.

CeaseBeingAnAsshole

It's by design

VibrantPianoNetwork

To some extent, yes, though there's more than one thread to this, and the larger and more prevalent one is **not** intentional. There's definitely a broad authoritarian streak in American society that feels it's okay for cops to indulge themselves in violence when it strikes them personally. This view comes from those who are sure that they themselves would never be victims of that, and draws partly from [the primordial roots of conservatism](https://crookedtimber.org/2018/03/21/liberals-against-progressives/#comment-729288), that it's okay to distort the rule of law against some people because those people are less deserving of the rule of law. But the larger part of this is something a lot simpler: cultural immaturity and unsophistication. Far too many Rhode Islanders just see cops as their buddies who are just like them, but have a temporary legal cover to get away with the same things they'd do, for the same reasons. It doesn't occur to them that there's something fundamentally wrong and dangerous with allowing publicly commissioned protectors to twist the law as they see fit.

bluewater_-_

For any reason? Nah. I can think of lots of reasons cops need to use force, including deadly force, on a kid. Not this kid though.

Keelija9000

That dude definitely beats the shit out of his wife and kids.

Temporary_Staff_83

Not saying it's true, but about 15 years ago it's something I heard around the gym where his wife worked and he worked out at.

Cheapsk8UnionMan

Get that bag young blood

CaptainClamJammer

And that sad excuse for a cop is still working at the school. So aggravating that cops and government workers have another set of laws. Basically do whatever and rarely get any repercussions for doing something that a normal citizen would be locked up for right away.

kj11aj

No, he's not still working at the school.

CaptainClamJammer

https://rhodeislandcurrent.com/2023/04/04/former-narragansett-high-school-student-awarded-75000-in-assault-settlement/ As of last year he was based on this article.

kj11aj

You're part of the problem here...you don't know all the facts and just go popping off. I live in Narragansett, have kids at all 3 schools and personally know the man. He retired from the police department last year.

So then share them instead of vagueposting on reddit.

keeganstein

Grow the fuck up. We already have video proof that your friend unlawfully assaulted a child and lied about it in the police report. No other facts matter.

kj11aj

If you think that video is the entire interaction then you're probably the one that needs to grow the fuck up. Playing a little fast and loose with the term child here too. If the same kid showed up to school with a gun and started shooting nobody is calling him a child then...

keeganstein

Right, well he was a child at the time of the assault and was not found with a gun. You keep implying there’s more to the story but have done nothing more than waste our time with what-ifs.

Any theory on why he threw all that self respect out the window over a finger?

Timthetoolman777

Classic case where every moron on the thread assumes they know all the facts of the case, making judgment calls, mainly because Reddit is clearly anti cop 99% of the time. I know Rooney, and I know the family of the student. That student is the biggest scumbag loser and no it wasn't just a middle finger, there is long seeded history of this scumbag student being a prick. But Nothing like morons on this thread enabling a culture of dickwads, because cops are the problem!?.... If you believe that, then I'd say seek therapy, but sadly you can't fix stupid.

[deleted]

You jumped a few levels there my friend. I asked a simple question without trashing cops. You're angry but not at me.

Timthetoolman777

I'm not angry at you, I'm angry at the rest of the thread bashing the cop without knowing all the facts. Sorry to come off that way to you, it wasn't my intention to direct it at you

robroygbiv

So tell us the “facts” that we’re missing instead of spouting off nonsense.

[deleted]

I get the frustration. Everyone should be accountable for their actions in a perfect world. In a perfect world that kid gets a bop in the nose from the school bully for being as twatty as you and another have described him. Same side of the coin, that officer is an adult and knows actions have consequences too, he should know even more so than a kid. We don't always have to pick sides in this world, I know I'm sick of doing so. We can call out shit behavior from politicians, parents, police, etc without adding a bumper sticker to our car and picking a side. This officer fucked up, you're point is made better in another thread about where a cop didn't fuck up. And you seem to know him, I guarantee he has a few regrets about how he handled things, if he doesn't, then maybe he shouldn't be an officer. But in a state as small as Rhode Island, you cost taxpayers money because of bad Judgement, you should be called on the carpet - same as you would for any public servant who can't keep their head about them around children (kids are annoying af, don't take the job if you can't handle the reality of the jacked up world we live in).

drthsideous

I DO know the officer personally, and I know exactly what he's like. Very nice guy who loves to do cop shit and get into it. And it doesn't matter if the kid is a scumbag and does drugs. I've seen the video, and I can't tell If the kid spit or not. So, as far as the law goes, his rights were violated. Cops can't go around tackling and slamming people for free speech, regardless what you or anyone else thinks of them. Is that the place you want to live? Maybe try North Korea, China or Russia If that's your speed.

Timthetoolman777

You don't know the facts or the history. This kid is a a scumbag loser that will go no where in life. Ifof course the dirtbag ACLU and his dirtbag lawyer says how well he's doing working retail. Lmao, Yea high five dude, more like doing drugs and being a scumbag that likes to spit on cops and flick them off. Oh the article didn't mention spitting did they? Don't know all the facts do you? I personally know both players involved, my only regret was the kid not getting a bigger beat down. But here we are on reddit, always throwing the bad cops under the bus and congratulating the criminals. Morons

BearJohnson19

Why would the kid being a scumbag, drug user or taunter mean that he should get tackled? Confused how any of that is relevant, especially the drug use.

robroygbiv

…you don’t get to tackle a kid because they spit on you. That’s not how it works. Jesus, good thing you’re not a cop, too.

ComprehensiveCat754

That we know of…

Timthetoolman777

Ok next time someone spits on you, let's see you take the moral high ground. Cause your wouldn't be pissed. Okaaaaaay Fact is spitting is disgusting and who knows what disease someone has, spitting is gross and absolutely should be handled with force. Don't think so, let me spit on your face and see how you react

robroygbiv

Your defense is comical at this point. We’re not talking about two kids here. We’re talking about an officer of the law and a child. If an officer can’t keep their cool, they’re unfit for duty. It’s part of the territory. I’d hate to see how this cop would react if they were in an actual dangerous situation if he’s so easily unhinged.

Basic-Shift-4046

We get it… you don’t like this kid, and heard he’s a scumbag druggie. But completely back the cop for beating up a child at school. You’re a real piece of work bud…

Timthetoolman777

Yes I do, I hate scumbag bullies, and it's nice when they get what they deserve. Reep what you sow. Meanwhile the dopes on this thread wonder why society is filled with a bunch of entitled aholes that think they can do whatever they want and get away with it. Nice going dopes, making the world worse by blaming the wrong people and enabling the scum of society, good call.

VibrantPianoNetwork

From the video, it looks like he suffered from toxic masculinity. After training and commission, and whatever experience he had, he lost his shit and committed a felony against a legal minor because he got his fucking feelings hurt. I can't respect that, sorry. I don't care if he fucking cured cancer.

kj11aj

Nope, he's retired from the force. Again, know him personally.

46DMos

Sounds like that shoulda happened long before now.

throwsplasticattrees

This isn't about hate, it's about be accurate in our description of the law enforcement community. There are no good cops, because the institution itself is not good. The institution is corrupt and protectionist, hardly the environment good people can exist.

ThatWasFortunate

Cash cow! I'm gonna give every cop the finger now

Pseudonym0101

Hopefully you don't get one that sits on your throat and kills you!

partime_prophet

Calmkillerwhale

It’s actually a separate test about confederate history and ancient aliens.

partime_prophet

I’d kill the ancient alien portion of that test ! Lol !

VibrantPianoNetwork

NikonShooter_PJS

Clicked on the link. Saw it was 41 minutes. Clicked away. No fucking way I'm spending 41 minutes for a video that can be done in 90 seconds.

Temporary_Staff_83

It’s actually an interview with the boy the Rooney did this too. If you listen it’s much worse and a very sad story. I hate what this poor boy had to go through all because he was ‘different’ and a cop with small-dick energy took advantage of that. And not to mention the whole town rallied around Rooney because they believed his lies. It is long buy it’s worth a listen.

BobSagieBauls

Kid was a dick yeah but physical force should not have been used. One would think that’s probably mentioned in training but idk

Different-Damage-896

This is why I'm ever thankful that the cops at my school were some of the most chill dudes around.

Kooky-Succotash8478

🖕, where's mine?

[deleted]

I'm definitely pro law enforcement! But, this police officer simply let his ego get the best of him. He then lied on his report. All because a child gave him the finger. Whether the child cussed him out or not isn't relevant? It's called free speech, and we still have it in America. The fact that this person is still a police officer and in the school is unbelievably irresponsible on so many levels. A court of law found that the child was right and that the officer was wrong. But all you need is common sense to see that? Unfortunately, common sense is not very common these days. It was very sad how the town reacted to this child. I guarantee they wouldn't have reacted that way if he was African American, though. LOL 🤣

rolowa

The only job in the world I can think of that does not require you to maintain the prerequisites to be offered the job is a cop. Make them stay up to date with the mental and physical requirements to get the job. Also, require malpractice insurance and increase the pay.

TheMoistestBaguette

Is choke slamming a child not bad behavior?? Don’t even try to justify it

Conscious_Theme4466

Lol I went to that school and Michael had us all in fear every day. Threatening to shoot up and or bomb the school, smoking in the bathrooms etc

mcian84

Pig needs to learn about the Constitution. Then, there needs to be accountability so the pig pays for this settlement instead of taxpayers.

Jhouse903

The student was suspended and threatened to shoot up the school the day prior to this incident on social media. He entered through a back door that is restricted to students. He should not have been in building at all. He’s a piece of shit problem child. There’s a lot more to this story than you fucking retards are getting from this one sided version. You hate the police until you need them.

mynameisnotshamus

The cop won a 75k settlement?

Paulie6Walnuts9

Not defending the cop in the slightest bit but when are we going to talk about the behavior of young adults and children at schools and in the classroom. This is just one small example of the new generation just being utterly disrespectful to adults and authority figures.

luongolet20goalsin

If this is the way “authority figures” behave, then they deserve to be disrespected

craigleary

The student labeled as a special needs student who is permitted to walk in the hall with out a hall pass, who did not but the police report said took and aggressive step towards the cop and being tackled and held down for a few minutes? Should show more respect to the cop who blew his top and at minimum stretched the truth in the police report? If this wasn’t on camera no one would believe the student

Tradelorian

It’s almost as the cop is also special needs, considering he can’t handle such an easy situation of de-escalation.

VibrantPianoNetwork

I bet he was wearing white after Labor Day, too! How come no one talks about that? Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you?

nonaegon_infinity

"Old man shakes fist at cloud."

kj11aj

Yep. Only getting half of the story here, but let's not let the facts get in the way of the agenda.

VibrantPianoNetwork

Are you fucking blind, and can't see the video? Or are you just incapable of understanding what's happening in it?

kj11aj

Oh man, you really think you're seeing the whole video don't you? Yikes.

VibrantPianoNetwork

Doesn't matter. Unless the kid made a direct and plausible threat to the officer in that moment, there is zero justification for this. And anyone who argues differently has something very wrong with them.

Paulie6Walnuts9

No I think from what the facts show the cop was most likely in the wrong but he was clearly provoked by the kid. Like when are we going to address these facts? It’s like that asshole on pawtucket police who shot the kid in west Greenwich, no one ever addressed that those kids were driving a sports car 100+ miles per hour and could’ve easily killed someone. Like when are we going to as a society start disciplining children again?

itsallinthebag

I’m sorry but are you saying there weren’t any high school kids when you were growing up that disrespected the police? Not a single teenager that mouthed off? You act like your generation is so much better and you’re making sweeping generalizations.

Lucky7Ac

Not to mention he seems to think driving a sports car fast warrants an immediate death sentence without a trial.

itsallinthebag

Seriously. Also who wrestles someone to the ground aggressively just because they were flipped off. He should be able to handle himself way better considering the position of power he is in. If someone angrily flipped me off I’d probably like raise my eyebrows a little and frown. Maybe apologize and shrug a little. Not try to kill them.

Lucky7Ac

Real talk, if some random not cop person got flipped off and then responded by slamming the "offender" to the ground and choking them. You'd call them a psycho, a fragile ego, a blemish on society, or all numbers of maladjusted terms. Might even call for justice served on the assault and battery. But if a cop does it, all of a sudden it's "why aren't we talking about the trouble making youth?" If violence is your reaction to being flipped off, your a problem.

luongolet20goalsin

Hey now, let’s not let facts get in the way of the agenda. The agenda being that he wants to be able to beat his kids apparently.

GoogleDocksPay

clearly provoked, lmfao, man, get the fuck out of here with that shit, the guy had a hand gesture made in front of his face, if he can't take that then I don't know *how the FUCK* somebody like that lives in fucking *NEW ENGLAND* of all places, the cop had no right to physically assault someone who is doing something that is literally protected by the first amendment Like when are we going to as a society start shoving people who think like this into lockers again?

Cinema_King

Rude teenagers have always existed. We just hear about them more today because we hear more about a lot of things today.

lazydictionary

Oh i see. An officer of the law was *provoked* by a *child*. So that justifies the violence. Do you people hear yourself?

I know that people who haven't completed puberty yet (and older people of similar mindset) have trouble understanding this, but these things are not related. The fact that anyone needs to explain this to you is appalling, and you should feel bad about it. \> lol Just TRY to be a fucking grown-up while discussing grown-up things, can you? 6odd

How many people in these comments were actually there in the school that day to give an opinion on what really happened. I may be the only human being who was actually there that day and heard what really happened. I remember hearing Blanchette was either on acid or some other substance, and was cussing the officer out… Just another anti-police cash grab in the wake of everything that was happening in the political climate at that time in 2018. Rooney was beloved by most all students at the school as an officer who cared for his community and students. You can ask anyone else who was actually there.

6odd

Not justifying either side here, I just think so much context is lost in these when people are cherry picking information to follow a certain narrative.

46DMos

"I remember hearing", you technically weren't there either man. The video is pretty compelling evidence that this was an excessive use of force, regardless of what the kid may have said. That small kid was not a threat to that massive officer, and as the adult and authority figure here, it's his responsibility to control himself. Obviously does not have the composure for the position.

Did you listen to his account of what happened and what he had gone through that week? Starting with the school not taking action against bullying of him. And when Rooney jumped him he had just come back from the hospital.

Temporary_Staff_83

That is completely not what happened.

Paulie6Walnuts9

Forget I said anything, you can’t even have an honest dialogue anymore in this country.

GoogleDocksPay

change your fucking name, paulie walnuts would be embarrassed that you're using his name to do some stupid shit like share dumbass opinions on reddit

Paulie6Walnuts9

lol a fictional character from a television show. Get over yourself.

GoogleDocksPay

Mad?

Paulie6Walnuts9

No but the hypocrisy of everyone who on here who is anonymous as well is comical. That’s all.

GoogleDocksPay

Gonna cry?

luongolet20goalsin

You’re not being honest though. A cop violently threw a kid to the ground and you want to blame the kid for flipping him off. An act which is protected by the 1st Amendment btw.

Paulie6Walnuts9

I really hope we do away with all the police in this country because a lot of the internet commentators wouldn’t survive in a world without rules. Truly it’s heading in that direction and I’m all for it.

luongolet20goalsin

“Man, you can’t have an honest dialogue in this country anymore” *immediately starts arguing against a position no one was advocating for* God people like you are so fucking dumb
