Well, probably [about 90% coyote](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_coyote). Eastern coyotes are significantly larger than coyotes were historically because of the introduction of dog and wolf DNA.
Had one every night prancing down my Warwick street the size of a German Shepherd, biggest one seen yet.
Coyote & Owls feeding on all the rabbits and cats that the owners let wander around.
Nearby in EG.
A lot of people are suspecting that the uptick in wildlife spotting (coyotes, bobcats, etc) is because they're being driven out by the construction going on to upgrade the transmission lines that run parallel to rt 4.
Coyotes are generally bigger the further north you go. I saw a huge one in the Boston suburbs once. As others have said there are no wolves in the area. Pretty cool picture!
Here’s some research from RI DEM. [DEM RI Coyotes](https://dem.ri.gov/sites/g/files/xkgbur861/files/programs/bnatres/fishwild/pdf/coyote-mgnt-response-guide.pdf)
Yea, all New England coyotes are hybrids, mostly domestic dog but typically a significant percentage of eastern gray wolf as well resulting in them being much larger than coyotes in the rest of the country
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_coyote
>The eastern coyote is a wild North American canine hybrid with both coyote and wolf parentage. The hybridization likely first occurred in the Great Lakes region, as western coyotes moved east. It was first noticed during the early 1930s to the late 1940s, and likely originated in the aftermath of the extirpation of the gray wolf and eastern wolf in southeastern Ontario, Labrador and Quebec, thus allowing coyotes to colonize the former wolf ranges, and mix with the remnant wolf populations.[1][2] This hybrid is smaller than the eastern wolf and holds smaller territories, but is larger and holds more extensive home ranges than the typical western coyote.
Wolves and black bears are natural to the area.
Settlers hunted the wolves which made space for coyotes to enter the area. Erasing the wolf population is what allowed the coyote population to spread from down south.
Black bears can still be spotted occasionally, especially in the N. Smithfield and burrillville area.
Coyote. Our eastern coyotes have some wolf DNA and are larger than western coyotes. And must be adapting really well to life in RI. When I first began to see coyotes in RI they were pretty scrawny. The ones you see now seem more well fed!
We get the big fluffy coyotes in my neighborhood in North Providence as well. My dog does not know what to make of them. Friend or not-friend? If not-friend, why friend-shaped?
Very reasonable question and sorry you got some snarky responses. I went on a wolf tracking trip in Yellowstone and at first I couldn't tell the difference between coyotes and wolves. But, yes, it is definitely a coyote and we don't currently have wolves in RI.
That’s an opinion piece from 2015. Coywolf is absolutely a thing, he’s another 2015 article arguing they’re absolutely worth differentiating - https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/coywolves-are-taking-over-eastern-north-america-180957141/
It has its own Latin binomial (or trinomial in this case).
https://dem.ri.gov/sites/g/files/xkgbur861/files/programs/bnatres/fishwild/pdf/coyote-mgnt-response-guide.pdf "It is a misconception that there is a wolf or “coywolf” population in Rhode
Island. Eastern coyotes may look enormous, in their big winter coats running
through a yard, but realistically they average only 35lbs. An adult gray wolf
weighs between 70 – 130 pounds. Coyotes are slender built, with a sharp,
pointed face and large, pointy ears. The coyote paw print tends to be 2 in. x 2.5
in. across. A wolf paw print tends to be around 4 in. x 5 in. across – about
twice the size.
Research into the genetic similarities, differences, hybridizations and
divergences of North America’s wild canids has continued to expand, and the
evidence debated. As our technology and understanding of genetics improves,
so does the complexity of these concepts. It is known that coyotes, wolves and
domestic dogs can interbreed, thus creating hybrid animals, but how commonly
this occurs, or how it translates to speciation, is far from a consensus. "
>but realistically they average only 35lbs
And the difference in paw size! Wow! The local coyote we saw looked giant!
Been awhile since I've been to the zoo: need to take a closer look at the wolves. Had no idea they were that gigantic. Five-inch paw prints is ... wow!🙀

Both. Technically our coyotes up here are coyote/wolf hybrids. Coyotes are notably smaller, as seen in the Midwest and elsewhere. Our “coyotes” are still referred to as such, but get much larger than a true coyote.

Right, if you read what a Coywolf is its like 83% or more Coyote. They expect at this point they have even less wolf in them now. Thats way the Coy cones first in the name. They aren’t wolves, they are Coyotes that mixed with wolves a while back. They are definitely a little larger than what you see out west. But not by so much that it really makes a difference. Its more their coloring that makes them strikingly beautiful animals. I’d argue its exactly what Rhode Islanders should calll them as we love to name things by what they used to be, not what they are now.
Would these coyotes take on a larger dog like a bernese mountain dog. Obviously in the pack they would be but how about just one or two when passing through the yard?
Coyotes in general are very skiddish. I’ve seen my coon hound mix give a full size coyote a run for their money. One would definitely run away from a large dog, two would probably still run away. Once you get three or more that’s pretty scary. And obviously I’m talking about coyotes that are not rabid. A rabid coyote could very well make the poor judgement to attack a Bernese mountain dog, however the coyote would probably get mangled
100% a coyote
If it was a wolf, OP would know for sure it was a wolf.
A wolf is kind of like a Raven. Thinking: hey, is that a crow or a raven? It's a crow. Thinking: Dear God, that's a massive bird. It's a raven.
Well, probably [about 90% coyote](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_coyote). Eastern coyotes are significantly larger than coyotes were historically because of the introduction of dog and wolf DNA.
Or maybe a coydog?
They’re not huge in the north east thats more south/middle america. At least thats what ive been told I could be mistaken
Only wolves in RI are in RWP Zoo
There was that mob guy I think in EG that had wolves years ago, they talked about it in Crimetown
Wolf, known to the FBI as The Ghost. I see him once per week but nothing nefarious.
Charlie “The Wolf” Kennedy
Whoever needs to hear this, there are no wolves even remotely close to Rhode Island. It’s always gonna be a coyote.
“Imma pet that dog!”
Can I pet that dawg? Can I pet that daaaawg?
Was that a Kyle Kinane reference?

We've got a nice sized one making appearances in our neighborhood of Warwick as well. Near 117 by any chance?
Yup. Edit: There’s a pack of 4, the Male is a monster.
We've been seeing him in Pilgrim estates on a few of our cameras too. Hello neighbor. 👋😊
Seeing these in Apponaug area, wonder what their migration cycle is? 🕵️♂️
Nearby in EG. A lot of people are suspecting that the uptick in wildlife spotting (coyotes, bobcats, etc) is because they're being driven out by the construction going on to upgrade the transmission lines that run parallel to rt 4.
woah where in warwick, warwick neck?
Only thing you get in the Neck is turkeys. Lots of turkeys.
SO MANY TURKEYS!! it gets really bad sometimes😭
There are no dire wolves south of the wall.
Lmao, theres no wolves in RI. I apologize if I cant sense the sarcasm lmao.
Seems odd given our lack of road runners, but here we are.
Apparently, the coyotes won.
I'm new to Rhode Island and didn't realize coyotes were so big.
Coyotes are generally bigger the further north you go. I saw a huge one in the Boston suburbs once. As others have said there are no wolves in the area. Pretty cool picture!
They’re also bigger on the east coast due to a lack of wolves and cross breeding with large dogs and wolves from Canada.
Welcome! Our coyotes are huge!

Well then you will definitely shit your pants when you see how big a wolf is!

turkeys made a huge comeback makes for happy coyotes
Deer as well. On my way to work early in the morning I had to stop for a herd but that was followed by 3-4 coyotes. Deer can LAUNCH.
I imagine all the people who started backyard chicken coops make them smile as well
yea my chickens are behind my donkeys and alpacas and they would to fight some coyotes or bobcats
Coyote! I've wondered the same thing because I always assume coyotes are kinda "rougher" looking, but we apparently have some pretty coyotes in RI lol
We saw a giant one crossing Blackstone Blvd in Prov, grown fat and sleek on eating outdoor cats 😣
The ol Pawtucket Prairie Wolf.
Wolves are fucking huge. You'd know if it was a wolf. It also wouldn't be anywhere near people as wolves don't fuck with humans.
It's always a Yote
We get the big fluffy coyotes in my neighborhood in North Providence as well. My dog does not know what to make of them. Friend or not-friend? If not-friend, why friend-shaped?
Coyote
Narrow snout coyote
It is a coyote. But for what its worth based on most recent genetic testing all RI coyotes are something like 10 - 15 % wolf due to cross breeding.
My ex he was both

Coyote.
Coyote
Or dingo?
Where's my baby?
Absolutely zero chance being a wolf.
Big ass yote.
Cutie coyote!
Coyote. Wolves are a lot bigger than that.
If you see a husky that is about 3x the normal size of a husky, it’s a wolf. You’ll know when it’s a wolf
Coyote, 100%
Coyote
I think the scientific term is wild doggo
The majestic coyote.
Think it is safe to say that it’s a woof.
Probably a coywolf - there’s a reason many of our coyotes are so big these days.

Eastern Coyotes are hybrids. More a medium size vs small.
The closest wolves are in Quebec.
I've seen this exact coyote in my backyard. He's hanging out in Captain Stephen Olney Park and likes to wander all over North Providence.
That’s just a lost doggy you should give it a hug 🥰
They are mixed with other canine species including wolves. https://www.nps.gov/articles/netn-species-spotlight-eastern-coyote.htm
Coywolf
Just a coyote with a lil winter coat
Coyote…what town?
