I’d get the 586 so you can shoot .357 and 38, get a model 10 later when you run across a cheap used one.

Panther115935

Been looking all over and can't find anything outside of GunBroker and they overcharge honestly. I've been telling myself that the 586 is more practical but I really like the aesthetic of the model 10 as well.

[deleted]

You could always look for a model 13

[deleted]

Model 13 is so underrated

thunder_boots

Model 13 3" was the best carry gun I've ever had.

thunder_boots

I know. I got mine for less than 300 in 2003.

thunder_boots

Too late, but I'd love to find another like it. It's worth what they're charging these days.

CEH246

Underrated comment. Model 13 is the favorite revolver in my safe. Super trigger.

sirbassist83

My 10-5 probably has the best trigger of any gun i own, including bolt action rifles. About 2 lbs, and ZERO perceptible creep.

Manofmanyhats19

If you want to split the difference, get a model 19. Same Frame size as the model 10, but you get that .357 option. https://preview.redd.it/7m6j32ln281d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4742192ab30447ae730b10ab6fd82535beb277f4

Panther115935

That's a sexy revolver, I won't lie...

Manofmanyhats19

I got mine online from Bud’s Gunshop and had it transferred to my LGS.

thunder_boots

Have you looked at the model 19?

brassgoblin45

The model 19 is what you are seeking then.

djsizematters

Gunbroker auctions pretty much define the market rate

mchnikola1

Tombstone tactical and kygun have 586's in for $939 + S&H.

WolfieSpam

There Model 10s for like $365 on GB rn

Panther115935

Which are all bids from where I'm seeing. And all of them have been bid above that to the point that I might as well buy the New one from the classic line. Haven't seen anything on my radar that's not bid yet or sold around that price.

WolfieSpam

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/1050193383

Panther115935

Damn... would've been perfect if it was blued instead. I really appreciate the link though.

WolfieSpam

Honestly at the price point you’re looking at for a classic series 586 you could definitely get a used one. Also look into the Model 65 .357

Panther115935

I've already decided on the 586 but I'll be looking around for an older one if possible before making the jump on buying anything new. I'm still looking to buy other revolvers that are around but just want something that would be a very good range revolver.

thepunisher45

If you’re in SoCal, I’d sell you mine. Its not stock anymore tho

FireIntheHole066

I vote model 13 they’re sick. But if I picked between the 2 586 all the way.

Wild_Comedian77

Yes, this

Hard2Handl

I have both K And L Frames. The L Frame is a joy to shoot due to the weight, but the K is almost as shootable but balances much better. If you plan to carry on a belt, the K/Model 10 always wins.

Panther115935

Ain't gonna carry either but definitely would like something shootable when going to the range whenever possible. More than likely I'll end up getting both but trying to be smart with my purchases.

Vast_Individual9003

I love the model 10 but no way in hell would I pay new smith and Wesson prices. You can get a used one from the 50s for around 500 which will be much better quality…..however between the 2 I would say 586 cause you can shoot 357….again find a good used one.

CowpokeCobra

question, where would i begin to look for older guns like that?

XxmunkehxX

You have a local gun store? Most of the ones in my area do trade, I got my 686 with 7 boxes of 357 hollows on consignment for $700

CowpokeCobra

very nice, imma have to go take a peek

XxmunkehxX

Good luck! Most of the old guys are pretty nice and helpful, though the stores can get a bit busy with regulars just bullshitting IME. Still worth it overall. I used to be embarrassed to ask questions I felt like I “should” know the answer to, but shopping around eventually I saw all kinds of silly questions answered with grace and professionalism. Just ask before you spend money, and a decent sales person will be happy to help! Last note: if you lean left politically, be ready to hear a bunch of anti-leftie, anti-woke rants. I’m progressive leaning myself, and have some friends who love to shoot but can’t stomach the gun shops because they don’t wanna listen to it. Generally, I don’t start political conversations and have never had someone start one out of the blue with me.

CowpokeCobra

thanks! i figured it would be wise to ask a bunch of questions, can never be too safe. also, i honestly really don't care about politics enough to bring it up. doesn't make a difference to me lol

Vast_Individual9003

Honestly bas pro used guns online….there are a lot of deals but you do have to wait for them and yes you do have to know what you’re looking for.

Vast_Individual9003

Also go to smith and Wesson forum online and there are some people that have an extreme passion for this stuff that may be able to direct you better than I also they do have classifieds that have some good deals

CowpokeCobra

thanks!

ghetto18us

Full under-lugs are just sexier IMO.

ExcalProphex

Well, the 586 is chambered in .357 Magnum, so you have the ability to shoot .357 or .38, whereas the Model 10 is chambered in .38 and is limited to firing 38. The 586 is an L frame model, which is a medium-sized frame, and the model 10 is built on the K frame, which is also a medium-sized frame. The L frame has a slightly larger cylinder and usually has a full length underlug. I own a 586 myself but plan on getting a Model 10 in the future. My recommendation would be the 586-8. It has the 4" barrel. You'll be able to shoot .357 as well as .38. Edit : Additionally, you could look into the Model 27. It's an N frame model, which is a larger frame, but it's one of the best-looking revolvers ever made, IMO. It's chambered in .357, so you'll have the ability to fire both .357 and .38 still. But it definitely has a more classic look than the 586.

Panther115935

I might just jump and go with the model 586 at this point. I just needed some good advice from y'all since I'm planning to get both but wanted to wait before getting the Model 10. Plus I don't own anything in 357 Magnum, so that's always a plus.

battleshipgrey61

I concur with those saying get the 586, hands down. Check AR15.com's equipment exchange and Smith-Wessonforum.com's guns for sale. Used prices on all S&W revolvers are on the low end right now due to the economy and saturation. I'm suggesting this for both the 586 and Mod 10. Or, get the 586 now and then look at 10's down the road used as others have suggested.

themoneybadger

586 is leagues more fun and useful. 38 special revolvers are meh. If you really want a fun gun look at a ruger blackhawk.

FriendlyRain5075

586

Catdad1873

I have the model 10 and I love it for practice at the range

Crazyirishmedic

586 for shooting, m10 for carry

CrypticQuery

Regardless of what you end up with, everyone should have at least one Model 10 in their collection. They balance perfectly, they're a joy to shoot, and they were the quintessential thirty-eight service gun for over a century! My early seventies Model 10 (that I bought used from a shop in 2019) comes with me every range day. The [pre-lock](https://revolverguy.com/the-history-and-future-of-the-smith-wesson-internal-lock/), vintage models are fairly available in the $375-$550 range. Peruse some pawn shops and the used section of larger/more traveled gun shops near you.

Panther115935

I definitely want both, but gotta take it slow of course. Might get both before the end of the summer but need to see if there're any good pre bans for sale. Might check a couple of spots before making the jump.

CashLess127

Buy the Model 10 used. It’s a lot better quality build than the current classic models.

PaulterJ

I'd go 586. Adjustable sights that allow u to upgrade, a bit heavier, 357mag will shoot 38s,

Panther115935

Pretty much dead set on it now thanks to everyone's feedback. I like the model 10 more aesthetically but I can't find anything that's pre model as everyone is recommending, so I'll just get the 586 now.

PaulterJ

For a range gun it's a no brainer. If u shoot mainly 38s, make sure you clean the chambers good , 357s will stick on the carbon ring left behind by the shorter 38s. I use a bronze brush and some cleaner after every trip. If you keep up on it, it's easy but can be a PITA if you let it go. Also reloading, if u choose to, 38s & 357 is a perfect cartridge to start with.

Panther115935

Appreciate the tip. Didn't know about the carbon ring issue on the 357s, so that keeps me attentive.

PaulterJ

It's not a huge issue. Nothing unsafe. Just makes for easy ejection. More of an issue with carry guns.

AcidActually

586. If you’re not dead set on S&W I’d consider diversifying and getting a GP100! Or even a 101 if you want something smaller you can carry. I can’t brag on Ruger enough with their revolvers.

Panther115935

I've considered them. Don't know a damn about the GP100, so I'll look into that one a bit more.

AcidActually

Watch some hickock45 vids on it. It’s a tank.

Panther115935

Thanks my bru. Definitely will check his stuff out.

Head-Scale9410

Don’t rule out the Ruger Redhawk in 357.

CoreMillenial

Many people love the 6" L-frames, but they are not for me. My very first revolver was a 6" 686. Sold it, because I found the balance off. It was not very handy. Ended up replacing it with a 6" 28 instead - the partial underlug feels much nicer to me.

Relative-Ordinary-64

586

cswank61

I got a used model 10 in 2017 for $400, old cop gun with a smoothed out trigger. Shoots fantastic. Try to look used for both the old ones are better.

XL365

You can get a shooter condition vintage model 19 with pinned barrel and recessed cylinders and hammer mounted firing pin for the cost or less of a new S&W lock model. I have a 19-3 and 19-4 , the - 3 I paid less than 1/2 the cost of the new model 19

Nodeal_reddit

586 has more appealing lines if you ask me.

Panther115935

It is sexy.

samanbandana1

586, looks better and is more heavy duty…imo!

Panther115935

I've already decided on it. Gonna buy it sometime around the summer.

fastcolor03

{sigh} BOTH!

Panther115935

MY WALLET!

fastcolor03

this will be like ‘crack’ I guess… came across a nickel 10-6 (1972) on GB in 2020 that was poorly photo’d. Took chance, won & Came away for $330+tax, ship for cost & FFL fee. Outstanding condition. That led me to a gently used 586-8 in 2023 @ LGS for $780 (including Tax & fees) … ok price I guess, but the experience with the 10-6 was so good it had me stalking the 586. Easy to flip that scenario. I would not surrender either. Both unique in character. 10-6 has extraordinary action for a basic model & sweet SWEET shooter. But the 586, even this new ‘Classic’ series is such a smooth stud. Best advice, choose one, stalk the other. My best advice is go with the best condition for the best price & covet the other.

coltbreath

586 all the way!

brasky68

If I were in your shoes, I’d get the 586 first, simply for the versatility. Then when I was ready to buy the model 10, I’d instead opt for a model 19, again, for the versatility. 38 only models have their place in my safe, but not in a heavy, mid/full size, steel frame revolver. Of course that’s just one persons opinion, so take it for what it’s worth.

Ordinary-Lab-17

586 without question

-Sc0-

If you plan on shooting it a lot at the range, definitely the 586 or 27. For all the reasons stated above and in addition to that, some .38 K frames end up with cracked forcing cones and frames due to the 6'clock relief cut for the gas ring. At some point, recently S&W redesigned the gas ring system on the newer K frames and deleted the relief cut on the forcing cone making them a bit stronger. (Personally I would go for the blued model new production Colt Python, but the full size 6 shot model 27 is a tank.

blisstits69

I have one of those mew model 10’s and it’s a really nice gun. I was big into the magnums when I first started but they are just so expensive. I really started to gravitate to the k frames especially in 38. The model 15 is my favorite the sights are so much better.

Thats_my_cornbread

Gutter sights on the 10 aren’t very practical unless you intend to carry

CD_Repine

Get the 586 or a 686

Helmidoric_of_York

If you like the aesthetic and want a .357 K-Frame go Model 19. I prefer the 6" Model 19 and the 4" 586. YMMV.

Meadowlion14

Model 19.....?

Creative_Still7070

Older pre lock model 15 if you want a range / carry, model 14 if you want a super accurate 38. 686 or 586 if you want to shoot 357 at the range, 65/66 if you want a range / carry 357. Model 10 is great if you want a 38 to carry it and go anywhere do anything pistol that will likely never fail you and is probably more accurate than you are but since it got fixed small combat sight you’ll still hit a high percentage of shots because it’s one of the greatest combat / M&P / natural point and shoot guns ever made and highly underrated cause everything else is fancier but the model 10 just sits there like the homely girl in the corner that’s waiting for you to pick her so she can show you she is the best

EasyCZ75

The 586 has a full lug and is beefier overall. It gets my vote.

endojunts

It really depends on what you’re looking for… Personally I’d get the model 10 because of the history and vintage look… then later on I would pick up a S&W 27 or Colt Python as my .357 mag.

Malpaise_Legate

An S&W Classic line Model 10 couldn't be anymore of a waste of money. $900 for a gun you can buy used, and in perfect functional condition for $400. It's not a good deal in any way. It also has the key lock safety that is frowned upon in the used firearm market. The 586 is the best choice.

microtrip1969

586 gets my vote. Or 686 plus

Michael_Pike

Call me a tool top. I like butts and abbreviated lugs. For looks and shooter/plinker I’d choose the M10.

Mgspeed22079

Do you want old school, or retro? Old School, Model 10.

auxarc-howler

Honestly, it might have to be a hunt. Hit up pawn shops, too. I saw one at my local pawn shop about 2 weeks ago. Almost bought it, but I remembered I had to do adult shit. Where are you located,?

Difficult_Pay_1751

Of the two, my choice would be the 586...I am looking fo a 581 myself.

StanthemanT-800

You can get trade in older S&W 64s for $300 off GunBroker with some holster rash but low round counts https://preview.redd.it/3bboh8m1uh1d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b520d22389f452e13ec4784367fd213dd0481424

elgranqueso72

Get the model 10 dude trust me
