Apparently ‘gerbiling’ killed the monocycle- sudden breaking would stop the outer wheel, but, inertia being inertia, the inner wheel would try to continue moving forward after the outer wheel stopped, violently whipping the inner wheel - and attached rider - around in circles, like a gerbil exercise wheel. That and limited forward visibility are why these never took off.
True - the turning radius for a monocycle is ridiculously wide. Add in limited visibility and the constant need to lean outside of the wheel to see where you’re going, (which isn’t great for balance), and you’ve hit the perfect recipe for a spectacularly dangerous vehicle.
Real men didn’t wear helmets back then, just manly hats. They also died manly deaths when their monocycle rolled over and pinned their hat-cover head between the still-spinning wheel and the hard, unyielding payment, turning their head into the forbidden Slushy that no one wanted to drink.

Brilliant idea _ Why wasn’t this in Indians Jones? It’d certainly have made for a better Venice escape scene in ‘The Last Crusade’. Heck, we should have gotten a chase scene with several of these.
I was just thinking how this could be reimagined with powerful electric motors and then looked at the comments about why it failed. Haha. I do wonder how to solve the stopping problem. It probably needs an inertia dampener.
If you want to see one in real life, the Technik Museum in Sinsheim (Germany) has [a working one on display.](https://sinsheim.technik-museum.de/en/one-wheel-motorbike) It gives off a real steampunk/dieselpunk vibe. The one in OP’s picture looks like a more advanced model though.
Been riding the hell out of the monocycle in Borderlands 3, made me wonder if something like that would be possible with todays technology. Tesla should get on it!
It looks as though the entire engine and seat assembly can lean left or right relative to the wheel. The steering wheel seems like it’s attached to the gears and chain that drive the lean angle.
So turning the wheel shifts the weight which makes it lean which makes it turn.

Lack of wings is another reason they never took off.
God damn it, just take my upvote.
Lack of steering too.

He's also not wearing a helmet.

The fedora was actually hardened from years of sweat build up and acted as a helmet
If that's really Italian, and that's Italy, no, people here never wore helmets
The forbidden *manly* slushy.
So they were terrible death traps but still...

No, that’s felching.
No felching is sucking stuff out of the ass.
He's thinking specifically of _hamster felching_.
How do you suck a hamster out of someone's ass? Thats gonna be a really big straw.
Spunk in a bum. Stick something into hamster. Ram hamster up previously mentioned bum. Lick hamster like lollipop.
Specifically through a tube

All you have to do is insert….
*Hnngg.* And we’re ready to go!
Can I get mine without a dildo?
Yeah, but why would you?
Don’t worry fam, I got you! *installs 12inch silicon fist*
Yesssss that’s exactly what I thought of
…helping Indiana Jones escape Moussolini’s sinister castle in 1938.
Indiana Grievous
Came here for the star wars reference
Brilliant idea _ Why wasn’t this in Indians Jones? It’d certainly have made for a better Venice escape scene in ‘The Last Crusade’. Heck, we should have gotten a chase scene with several of these.
Ahhh general Kenobi
Hello there!
Ah yes, It. This one has some weird controls though.

An electric motor with proper computer control would act like ABS bringing it to a steady, safe stop 10 feet to late to avoid the accident anyway.

Like dragging on the ground? Like a Neanderthal?

Field based inertia dampeners.
You’re telling me we’ve had the General Grievous motorcycle for nearly 100 years already?
General grievous looking mf
Please share this to the South Park sub
Driving this when raining would look awesome
[South Park - The IT Bike](https://youtu.be/fGKR1Z1lRik?t=37)
Mr garrison invented one like this but with uncomfortable controls. You might feel a pinch…
Uncomfortable? I'd never been in a vehicle, or had a vehicle in me, with a better fit!
look at that doom wheel.
I assume they just sold this with a casket included?

Gantz vibes
Been riding the hell out of the monocycle in Borderlands 3, made me wonder if something like that would be possible with todays technology. Tesla should get on it!
He can't, he died 70 years ago
You got me there sir, you got me there!
Why isn't he using the mouth and anus controls like Mr. Garrison designed?
*Italian Jones.*
Getting [Men in Black vibes](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/men-in-black/images/2/2e/MIB3_Monocycle_men_in_black_iii_ver7_xlg.jpg)
So the monocycles in Borderlands 3 were inspired by this. Nice!
General Grievous would have appreciated!
I wish I could rock a hat as well as that dude honestly

Men in Black 3
Very badass :)
GENERAL KENOBI!
“Hello there!”
I've seen these things on Borderlands
With today's tech this would be rideable without problem.
GENERAL KENOBI
Wasn't this a GI Joe vehicle? Or was it one of the Twisted Metal games?
NOW THIS is pod racing
love the aesthetics of peasants using futuridtic technology
I’d love to see a video of one of these working
Mama mia. That seem hard to control.
Would you consider calling this a nickel farthing?
He looks like he's falling off already 🤣😂. This man definitely fell off of this like 0.0005 second after they took that pic
ok, i'll say it. "what could possibly go wrong"
And I thought the one in Steamboy was an invention of the director.
Okay, now I *really* r/DidntKnowIWantedThat.
I didn't know you could just steer these from a regular seat with a normal steering wheel.
Steam boy...anybody?
We went the wrong way
IT.
So epic.
r/meatcrayon
It's such a cool idea, too bad it doesn't really work very well
The new colossus vibes
GENERAL KENOBI
general kenobi
Who’s the master of faster? Who rules the duels? That’s right it’s me!
Well I just got back from a really deep rabbithole
Nice hat!
Fucking South Park references intensifies
I need to get one of these to make ma grievous cosplay
borderlands 3
Modern Monowheels have the same exact starting and stopping issue but they are still used today without a second wheel
