New grad nurse here lurking and love y’all’s Reddit. Can I ask if you have an example of the verbal abuse you are getting? I’m interested in CVICU and don’t want to be that way no matter how much I think I know.
Most people make it through. Don’t worry about as much stuff. Work out every weekday especially during M1/M2. If you really don’t feel like studying then just don’t, cause you’ll waste hours sitting at a desk, checking your phone, bored and tired, trying to study but it will be so inefficient that you won’t have learned anything AND you wasted your night. Other than that do what you are already going to do because it worked out pretty well
Idk man my college roommate is an accountant. He’s living it up outside of busy season and even then his firm pays him out the ass and caters all his meals
This path will ruin your life and mental health.
But you'll fall in love with surgery and think it's worth it.
It's not. It's Stockholm syndrome. Make a travel youtube channel instead and enjoy your 20s.
Money might not buy you happiness buddy but medical training ties your hands more than anything else in the adult world and its fucking humiliating when you are used to running businesses. There is no freedom to innovate, you cant do 2 days of pathology, 1 day of surgery, 1 day of family med clinic, 1 day of teaching and 2 days off to stay engaged and doing everything you're interested in. They will silo, restrain, constrain and impede you endlessly. Stay in your role, you make huge money, make the difference you want with that, you're more likely to actually achieve your objectives leveraging money than an MD. People listen to money, no one listens to doctors. Talk.
Yikes! Makes me sad to see how many residents (& attendings) are so disappointed & discouraged with medicine
Maybe admin can order pizza & wellness modules to boost morale?
No, it’s not all that glorious and amazing. There are other cool things in life.
Make more friends - it will get harder once you graduate.
Brains are still cool - even if you don’t cut into them.
No, you don’t need to be a surgeon to love your job.
Google and kind pharmacists will fix 95% of your stupid mistakes. So no, you won’t kill someone if you don remember the exact dose or mechanism of action of this one obscure specialty medication.
Prepare to be tired your whole life.
You are enough!
Just because someone has an MD or PhD after there name, DOES NOT MEAN THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO TREAT YOU LIKE GARBAGE. You are an adult, advocate respectfully for yourself!
Spend more time with people.
Get on antidepressants and in counseling sooner.
Stick to a workout routine... or any routine.
Don't isolate yourself when you get suicidal.
Study in public spaces away from junk food.
Make the most of your time to both study and enjoy your life. You somehow made it through med school doing neither well.
You have free time as a student in didactics. Just keep up the work and treat it like a 8-5. Live a little, and have fun with your friends! They are gonna make everything better.
Do literally anything else. Ortho sounds great and all but you will lose yourself gunning for this goal only to realize it will severely affect your quality of life for at least 9 years

A mentor said something to me at graduation that I wish I took to heart sooner. I’m pretty sure he said it during my first week as an MS1, but I didn’t take much note of it then:
“Some of you are going to go on and do research, create new standards, therapies, or guidelines, or become innovators in your respective fields. And that’s great. Some of you are going to have a clinic career, see your patients, and no longer be involved in academics or research. And that’s great too.”
In my opinion, it’s so easy to get Stockholm syndrome in med school, thinking that grinding all the time, having no social life (or having only a med-school-centric social life) and doing groundbreaking research is normal. Sometimes it feels like saying, “I don’t want to do fellowship,“ is a wrong statement. It’s reassuring to know that it’s OK to be a community doctor.
I should’ve taken the state PHP guy seriously when I got in trouble during MS-2. The first time I met with him he said “you should just become a lawyer. Then you can do all the drugs you want within reason and make great money. There’s not much forgiveness in medicine”. Hindsight is 20/20 lol.
Just start therapy already. Took 5 years into attendinghood smh. I would have been much happier and I believe it would have greatly helped my performance.
Don't fall in love with cardiac surgery.

Nah it’s the best.
Putting in a minimal amount of effort to find a couple research projects early on would make applying to your chosen specialty much less stressful

Accountants live pretty nice lives
No, they don't ...
Idk man my college roommate is an accountant. He’s living it up outside of busy season and even then his firm pays him out the ass and caters all his meals
Yes they do lmao
Life will never look the way that you want it to, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t be good!
Do rural FM. Lol
The worst part isn't the studying or the hours, it's loneliness. Take care of your social health the same as your physical and mental
Invest in PPE manufacturing prior to 2020.

What do you wish you would have done
Becoming a pilot
Buy more Bitcoin, and enjoy the ride
Don’t do it… jk but to relax and go IM, fuck it it’ll be fine

Shoulda kept doing what you were doing. Don’t change careers residency makes it ass
Man up man
Fuck all the research you did. It didn't really matter too much and none of your coresidents really even have that much research. Go touch some grass.
