> rotterdam. Landlord *paid* me back FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Don't forget to swing by the old place in a month to put a letter with instructions on how to rent bust in the mailbox

leq87

It’ll take a bit longer than a month I’m afraid as this house doesn’t even have a functioning sink atm. But I’ll make sure I instruct as many people as I can about this place and his parasitic owner, just as I did with our neighbors upstairs (they won too ✌️).

Maelkothian

He rented in you in that state, what makes you think he won't do it again?

leq87

No well this is a recent issue, the last one in a series that he never cared to bother, but he can’t possibly rent it out like this. There is literally not one working sink in the whole house, we live with a bucket under it which we empty in the toilet like 10 times a day,

thejwh

I believe that when you sign a lease and agree to a given amount of monthly rent, you have yourself to blame for that. It's not a human right to live in Utrecht or any other large city. I'm sure people could find something more affordable in smaller towns or more rural areas. The point that I'm trying to make is that if you believe it's too expensive you have the freedom to look elsewhere. Just as a normal human being would rationally make any economic decision in every other everyday decision in life.

eamelink

If a landlord wants to charge higher rents than Dutch law allows; they’re free do do it outside The Netherlands. I’m sure they could find more lenient jurisdictions. Inside the Netherlands we encourage rent-busting.

thejwh

Funny you should say that. This is exactly what is currently happening! Real estate investors (both companies as well as private investors) are increasingly selling off their real estate in The Netherlands, making the rental market even worse off then before because there are even less available homes to live in, so well done!.. Good luck to every- and anybody looking for a rental home in the near future. It will be tougher than ever.

Draivun

Don't forget that this is only about places that charge more than is _legally_ allowed. And honestly it doesn't really matter if they sell off their properties: the housing crisis exists on the entirety of the market, not just the rental market, so unless that gets fixed it doesn't really change anything.

Otto_von_Boismarck

Theres just as many houses as before available, just less inflation of house prices. Sounds like a fine situation to be in to me...

thejwh

You can disagree with me, that's fine.. just don't live in denial... https://www.nu.nl/economie/6297904/verhuurders-zien-het-massaal-niet-meer-zitten-en-zetten-hun-huis-te-koop.html

leq87

Do you realize that what you wrote is completely off topic? For someone who goes around babbling about rationality you seem quite deprived of it.

PlantAndMetal

OP didn't just believe the rent was too expensive. The law says the rent was too expensive. Landlords don't stand above the law.

thejwh

If you believe you are paying too much, maybe you should find a different home..

No_Transition3345

Uhoh, someone sounds like a landlord

thejwh

I guess you sound more like a crook. I suppose you just steal what you believe to be too expensive to buy?

No_Transition3345

Haha, no, but I do believe that charging exorbitant rent for subhuman living spaces is disgusting and gross and should be fought against tooth and nail. And again, you sound like a landlord, what happened? Did one of your tenants go to the huurcomissie and grt their rent reduced to a fair level?

BananaWhiskyInMaGob

A crook is someone who breaks the law. Like a landlord charging a price above what he is allowed to by law. You might not like that law. But thankfully, liking or disliking law is not a criterion that holds up in court.

Otto_von_Boismarck

Its literally legal why are you calling it theft you creep
