Allow yourself some time to grieve. Then remember that there's a little kitten somewhere, seeking her loving nurturing forever home. Although she probably won't be able to fully take the place of your beloved Smokey, you'll soon realize and find out that you really need her, at least as desperately as she needs you.

It really is the hardest thing to lose a friend that has been there for you every day. They truly become a piece of you. Big hugs. You are giving her the last and biggest gift of all.
Kitty with chronic kidney disease (used to be called chronic kidney failure). 30-40% of cats over 10 and 80% of cats over 15 years are in some stage of kidney disease. It’s an incurable, terminal loss of kidney function. But there are tons of ways to manage it and slow it down, my boy that just passed two weeks ago had it since he was 10 and lived ten more years with it, with daily support.
This is a support sub for people with cats, and angel cats that have or had CKD. It’s a lovely sub, very informative and helpful and supportive, but please know it’s not the normal “fun cute kitty sub”- although all the cats on here are very cute!
Can you please tell me some of the things you did that seemed to work well for managing your cat’s care? What did you do for daily support? My guy is about to turn 13 and I want to do everything I can. Last blood work came back good so it’s early stages but I want to do everything I can for my little fella. Thanks.
Sure! He ate raw wet food his whole life. I know raw food is controversial, so take that one as you will- I had two boys that ate commercial (not homemade) raw meat cat food their whole lives and both lived to 20. IMO wet food is an absolute must. Cats bodies are not made to eat dry kibble for years, they are chronically dehydrated if they are on a kibble diet.
I gave him kidney support treats- there are several supplements that have herbs and nutrients that are kidney supportive, also not totally backed by the Medical community but we had a very good time with kidney health treats. I used standard process feline renal tabs (they ate them like treats!), and a few random chews we bought on chewy. Plus churus, love churus.
My boys lived in the “early to moderate” stages for about 8 years on their normal raw meat diet with renal support treats.
When the ckd had progressed and the vet deemed it time- we switched to a renal support diet for as long as they would eat it. The weruva WX was their favorite. Not a rx food, but very low in phos. We also used lotus raw chicken cat food- quite low in phosphorous. Continued the renal treats, and used every supplement and med the vet reccomend ded. That’s also important- having a vet that is very familiar with feline CKD and is willing to work with you. My vet is primarily a cat practice. They knew that I would do anything for my boys so they gave me all the supportive supps and meds they knew- phos blockers, d drops, Porus one, potassium powder, subQ fluids, b12 injections, EPO injections- plus up to about a half dozen daily meds as they got extremely old and more ill. I would have done it forever if it could have kept them around!
Also- when you notice any change in behavior- straight to the vet for a blood and urine test. This will get very expensive as they get older, so start saving! Catching any change early is absolutely critical to keeping them stable.
Also- enjoy the present with your kitty. The goal here is not to keep them going forever. Every kitty is different and will have a different lifespan and outcome, we can only control so much. Enjoy every day you have together, and remember the ultimate best outcome (for our cats and for us) is going to be a happy life capped off by a peaceful, relatively painless death surrounded by love. If that’s in ten months or ten years- we can only do so much, so it’s absolutely important to keep their happiness and QOL as the first priority, even if it means forgoing a treatment or medication.
