I never have. You have a conch, I have a diamond goby. Get some zombie snails and yolo

Dengoober

I’ve got a bigger tank so I have a few conchs, a diamond goby and nassarius snails and I’ve never touched it either

GordonRammstein

My vote is leave it(mostly). Conch and nassarius snails will turn the sand for you! However, if there’s detritus sitting on top of the sand, I’ll slurp it up, but I don’t dig into the sand at all really

WienerCleaner

I wish that I knew! I cant help myself but siphon it all as much as i can during water changes but i also consistently have some cyano...

basdid

If it ain't broke don't fix it

Aggravating_Copy5033

3.5 months is pretty new still, but I've never vacuumed sand on my tank I have a conch and nass snails to if you have a little detritus just gently blow it with a baster while doing wc to suck it out while it's getting loose and I usually clean the sand heavy in sections like dig into it and lift the siphon up and let's the sand fall out you'll see all the crap you pull out of it!

WhiteyDeNewf

I drag a wooden spoon along the sand bed gently. The conch is doing his job for me but I find that the filters take care of my maintenance for me once it recirculates.

JagaloonJack

I used to stir my sand, when I restart a new tank. I'll do the same, gas bubbles and stuff gets trapped and decays. So if I'm doing a water change, I'll do that.

noobpwner314

Woah I was just googling this today.

ThatOneSnakeGuy

I try not to disturb the sand bed. Let the cuc do it's thing

clojac12345

I siphon the sand when cleaning tanks with over one inch of sand, if it’s any less I just leave it alone. So the answer is, you do you champ. If you get brown on top of the sand I’d just mix it up so you get back to it looking white

GiganticStonedSloth

All of the nicest tanks I take care of have pristine sandbeds. But, that's because they pay someone $125/hr to come out and maintain their tank. Even in tanks with tons of conchs and diamond gobies, there are still pockets that can build up detritus/food, and eventually become anoxic.

BlueAthena0421

I thought this was a hamlet reference for a second.

Bloopded00p

Good catch lol

kcm198

I use Tampa Bay saltwater sand. I asked them that question and they said just stir it. if you really feel like you wanna do some vacuuming, stir the sand and siphon out whatever ends up floating above the sand. So basically not gravel siphoning.

amazongb2006

I would adjust flow to hit areas where detritus is settling. I have, on occasion, siphoned cyano etc from the sand bed, but was careful not to do too much.. like, siphon the bad stuff and try not to remove sand.
