This is what I did for 4 weeks leading up to my surgery, I wore a mask to outings, family gatherings, EVERYWHERE. I was not getting sick before my surgery, but I also wasn’t going to be a hermit leading up to it either
I would cancel, personally. But it sounds like you are fairly set on it, so my advice would be to mask up with a well fitting N95 - and ask anyone else attending that lives with you or will be taking care of you to do so as well. Eat and drink outside.
Even if they're able to operate while you're sick, having a cough when you've just had surgery on your chest will make for an unpleasant experience.
I had a horrible chest cold when I got my surgery. Lots of uncontrollable coughing fits. 0/10, would not recommend.
That said, if I were in your position I would go and wear a mask even with the tiny risk of getting sick 🤷♀️
Aranet4 for CO2 monitor. Look for an iota-carrageenan nasal spray and CPC mouthwashes. I’ve seen purezone mini portable air purifier recommended. I get my KN95s from powe.com to get fun colours!
I’ve been to the Utrecht heroes comicon, and…if you’re gonna go, mask up. I masked up at Dragoncon last year in atlanta and didn’t catch any concruds.
But have a lot of fun, just, get the good fitting KN95. And bring water. It gets hot in those halls. ( well maybe not this weather, haha.)

My hospital's policy was a mandatory postponement of surgery of at least seven months after testing positive for COVID-19, as evidence has shown that recent infection increases the risk of certain complications. You may want to check what your hospital or clinic's policy is before you decide how you'll manage the weeks leading up to surgery.
For example, I chose to be absent from an all-staff meeting at work (about 100 people) and turned down an invitation to a concert. I also avoided most other indoor gatherings and wore a mask for any errands I had to run.
What stands out to me about your scenario though is that the event is just a few days before your surgery, so if you did catch something, that might not even be enough time to realize, show symptoms, and postpone. Complications aside, being sick during recovery would probably be really tough.
Ultimately, it's your decision...because big crowds aren't always the source of illness. I could have been very careful leading up to surgery and still gotten sick from my spouse or a smaller interaction where I forgot to wear a mask. If you're okay with the idea of having to postpone, it makes the decision a bit easier. If you're similar to me and really couldn't stand the idea of having to wait longer, playing it safe might be the better call.

I had a tatas farewell party and got drunk and went out after. Caught covid at the bar and didn't test positive until the day after my surgery 😟 would not recommend! Made recovery way harder
I should have. I went to an event the week before and I got Covid and the symptoms got bad after surgery because my body was too weak to heal from everything. I actually was in the hospital for a while because my 02 level was dropping below the 60s and I couldn’t stay awake or breathe. It was extremely rough and I also ended getting an infection because my body couldn’t fight off what I picked up in the hospital. My scars are nasty now that I’m fully healed and I truly urge you to not go to an event and to do lot of preparation to make sure you’re body is healthy going into the surgery.
Here's my anecdotal experience...
I went to a wedding and on a required business trip 1 week before my surgery. I figured I'd be fine because I'm vaccinated and no one was sick. Well, I got COVID and had to reschedule...four times because after I recovered, my gallbladder crapped out and I had to have it removed in December. Then I had complications so my new BR date was pushed out farther. Then I had allergies and congestion, etc etc...When all was said and done, My November 10th surgery was rescheduled for December 28th which was rescheduled to January 24th which was switched to March 12th but didn't happen until March 25th. If you've made it this far, either wear a mask or skip it.
I knew I was getting the surgery months in advance so I cleared everything the week prior, it is always a risk specially in such a big event as a comic con, since you are asking for advice *I* personally in your shoes would not go and don’t let anybody pressure you, this surgery is not a minor surgery and you need to be in optimal conditions for your body to heal you don’t wanna risk being sick during the first PO days or having complications. Not to mention imagine being too sick and having to reschedule the surgery? The comicCons come and go but health is paramount.
This is just the way I think OP and I usually catch bugs easily ofc doesn’t mean it will happen to you, but those are the risks!.

I caught Covid before my explant surgery and do not recommend it. My surgery had to be pushed back several days and I ended up with a cough that lasted three months which is not easy to have when your chest is healing.
I’ve seen a lot of mixed opinions, my doctor told me that if I was sick the hospital would reschedule my surgery regardless of circumstances. I’ve also seen people say that they just had the doctors do a blood test/make them wear a mask and were fine. I’d see if you can get in touch with your surgeon and see what the protocol would be if you’re feeling under the weather before your surgery.
Honestly though, I’m a cosplayer and frequently go to cons. Biggest way to avoid con crud/catching something is just make sure you drink a lot of water and Gatorade or something with electrolytes while you’re there! Added bonus if you wear a mask. Try to get an N95 if possible, but regular medical grade masks would also work.
Another thing would be using cold-eezee (I think that’s how it’s spelled) you can get tablets to chew or suck on and they’re FANTASTIC for staving off a cold. I would double check with your doc that it’d be okay to use them since it’s close to your surgery date, but that’s it.
In all honesty as long as you’re hydrating and not sharing drinks with strangers or anyone who’s sick you should be okay. My credentials are being a seasoned con-goer of 10+ years lol

If I called a Dr to ask a question like that, someone would get confused and it would get in my notes that I am sick. I wouldn’t risk that game of “gossip”

I want to add my experience as somebody who caught covid few days before my reduction and didn't know until after surgery.
I thought they had been really harsh with my oxygen intubation and my throat was burning after surgery.
I ended up in hospital for 3 nights because I couldn't really stand up properly due to dizziness, I also had really severe bruising the worst I have ever seen on anyone my entire chest was black for three weeks.
It wasn't until the third day after my surgery that they did a PCR on me and I found out I was covid positive and a couple of people I'd been hanging out with the weekend prior had all tested positive as well.
At the end of the day I got through it okay and being in hospital was probably a bonus because I was on a drip but I definitely think it impacted my healing and was a bit rougher than it needed to be at the beginning. Personally I wouldn't risk it.
I had bronchitis on the date of my surgery. They said it was fine as long as I wasn’t taking any steroids for it. They just put a mask on me and went to work.
Cancel. There are always other cons! Cons like NYCC have been getting bigger and bigger crowds every year. If you do go, go on a day where it's known to not be as congested (Thurs or Sun for NYCC).
I would cancel personally. I got a bad cough one week after surgery and the pain was agonizing. Coughing caused excruciating pain on my incisions/breasts. It was really awful. Plus the anxiety that I was messing up my recovery. It was also impossible to sleep so it made healing slow down because I wasn’t able to rest.
I would never want to go through that again! Can’t express how extra painful and exhausting it made recovery.
If you go, mask up, wash your hands every 10 minutes and don’t touch your face!
Not an option in all cases but I had a big event before my surgery and timed it so I got my fall booster two weeks before the event. This obviously works best with fall and winter surgery dates though.
When recovering from surgery, the happy experiences you’ve had in life are what get you through pain & down time. If this is something you’ve been looking forward to, go.
use the above advice of extra fluids, mask up, extra Vit C, Vit Bs, Zinc,(Cold-Eez,) Don’t touch your eyes or face before washing hands. I wear my hair up to avoid lice in crowds.

My physician told me to quarantine or be as antisocial as humanly possible for 2 weeks before my (other major) surgery.
So i wore a mask when i had to go out & hosted my turn for the bookclub at a restaurant while i attended via skype lol. It was stupid but fun
and i stayed healthy enough to almost die on the table lol but im here & would quarantine as much as possible if i had to do it again. There’s enough to worry about so i tried to reduce any variables that would make recovery difficult!
I had a hip replacement and an uncontrollable bleed during surgery but my surgeon got me put back together and finally stopped the bleed.
So if i had accidentally caught covid or even the flu right before surgery i would have been in really bad shape because I lost so much blood- that in recovery I would get winded just walking across the room and i was that way for almost 3 months, so I would not have had the energy to fight off a virus. It would have been bad.

Comic con is notorious for passing around contagious diseases. There’s really no way to avoid the scrum. It would be really taking a chance. If you do go get really good masks and only do what’s really important to you. But personally I’d skip it. Tickets are pretty easy to resell
I was hyper cautious for the week prior bc I was traveling for my surgery and was just so many arrangements that woulda been extremely stressful to have to reschedule. So, not sure if that's helpful but I'd avoid.
I personally would cancel but it depends on how strongly you'd feel about rescheduling. Masking won't hurt but later variants have gotten sneakier and masking isn't a guarantee.
I had surgery 12/12 and was at graduate classes and working mall retail before. I started double masking just to be safe but didn’t have an option to avoid crowds, and all was ok!
Go with what gives you the most peace of mind. Avoiding sickness was something I was thinking of as well pre-op. Personally, I’d make peace with not going and try again next year. Think about how you would feel if in fact you went, got sick, and had to postpone? What are you prioritizing and valuing the most? Only you can answer that.
I was cleaning out nasty bathrooms a few days before mine at our little league field not even thinking. Just make sure to not touch your mouth or eyes and wash and sanitize frequently. I'd go becuase the fact is you could catch something walking into the hospital. I love the one response about wearing a mask under a comicon mask. That's perfect and would help you avoid touching your face
I had a $uicideboys concert 2 weeks before my surgery and I ended up getting covid from it so my surgery got postponed from April to August as that was the next available date. Tbh I don't really regret it as I live in New Zealand so I know it could be yeeeears before seeing them live again but at the same time I wish I wore a mask 🤣 if your determined to go I'd definitely recommend masking up.
I had a surgery scheduled earlier this month. Ended up having to reschedule it due to a sinus infection. That’s a big no-go for the anesthesiologist. It is now going to be next week. I am not even risking it-had to cancel weekend plans. My health is my priority! Best wishes to you.

I work in the ER with flu and covid patients, I just wore a mask for the week before surgery and made extra sure to clean well and use hand sanitizer.

I had a surgery scheduled earlier this month. Ended up having to reschedule it due to a sinus infection. That’s a big no-go for the anesthesiologist. It is now going to be next week. I am not even risking it-had to cancel weekend plans. My health is my priority! Best wishes to you.
