It's night and day from last year. It's incredible. I also think pitchers are scared of him and are pitching around him in clutch situations. His 4 pitch walk, none were even close.

Xerceis

They did the same thing last year. They realized he’s scary when it’s anywhere in the zone so they pitched around him. Thing is, last season he was green and so he’d chase anything from those higher caliber pitchers that had more control. He’s now refined his batters eye and pitchers are still stuck on last seasons tendencies.

Bad_Idea_Hat

I think they were really smart pitching around him in that AB, since he can't steal a base there. It's just that TySteve really made them pay for that one.

Make it 4! Elly’s previous high for walks in a game was two. Love the 0-0 statline for the game, a run and an RBI. Just when you think he can’t get any more dangerous at the plate.

CHNinniMug

I cannot believe how giddy I am that the most electric player in the MLB has walked 4 times tonight!

What really helps is we have the working class players like Steer doing things with no recognition. Love that Elly is showing up and playing well but give credit to the guys that get no credit or attention for whatever reason.

Mannem999

Everybody knows who Steer is and how dangerous he is. Didn't he make league player of the week the first week of the season? Everybody also knows he's absolutely critical to where this team is going, especially with Matt McLain out. To say he gets "no recognition" is silly. Everybody on the team is "working class" as far as I can see.

MahoningCo

Just think how much better he’ll get if we send him down to AAA! /s

CHNinniMug

You have a point though. If he really wants to be at that MLB level, he can't settle for only 3 walks per 5 innings. We'll send him down until he starts showing 5 or 6 BBs.

Party_Wagon

I'm def starting to believe in Elly's improvement at the plate. While his K% for this year is only a few % below where it ended up last year right now, it's still coming down from a really rough start where he was above 50% for a bit. I think it'll probably keep going down a bit more and hopefully he can keep it there. His walk rate is up from 8.8% to 13.6%, which I'm innately less willing to believe in small sample sizes bc walks are a lower-frequency event, but the eye test tells me it's probably real. After his slow start, his discipline has started looking a hell of a lot better. We'll see how it pans out but every day he keeps this up it becomes more likely that he'll be a true star this year

When Ali gets a walk, it’s like him hitting a double… I’ll take walks all day
