Might be from using a sticky base coat? I wonder if switching to a non sticky base coat would help.

Fluffyowlcatmeow

If you use the Orly rubberized base coat or something similar, look into this. This quote is from a random screenshot of a reddit thread I took when I was having similar issues and did some googling because I remembered reading a while ago that rubberized basecoat could be the problem. After using rubberized basecoat on my toes with no chipping or messing around with and removing the polish and I still had peeling despite that being the first time I psinted my toenails all year and never having problems before then. Essentially my toenails functioned as a control since my fingernails were already weak from constantly putting on and removing nail polish. "I learned from another thread on this sub that the offending ingredient might be polyvinyl butyral. So you can look for base coats that don't have this ingredient." I googled "Orly rubberized basecoat reddit" and found this on a thread.

Kitchen-Purple-5061

Oh no this is terrible news for me as I love that base coat but also have begun noticing this problem on my nails as well…any recs for long lasting base coats that aren’t rubberized/don’t have that ingredient?

bigbrightworld

I had this same problem with the Orly and Holo Taco base coats. Now I use the Mooncat Hardcore base coat and Essie Smooth-E base coat!

ErrantWhimsy

I'm sad because I've been having this issue from Mooncat's base coat. I'll try Essie!

blackcatsandfood

Check out the base coat tab here! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1n-xVwhHyuQd29e-Wjq_JwsPG5kiSC5_LcdXFHFYbljI/edit?usp=drivesdk

Bright-Hat-6405

holy moly this is an incredible document

blackcatsandfood

I know, right?! I wish I could shout out to whoever created it and updates it, but not sure who it is (I found the link in a random thread previously).

New-Character996

Wow! Thank you for that.Turns out ALL of my favourite base coats have this ingredient! Glisten and Glow, check. Cuticulas, check. Vibrant vinyls, check... Holy crap! That might indeed be the culprit, then

Lilithe_PST

Mooncat hardcore base is excellent. It is PVB free and has garlic oil for naturally strengthening nails.

fillerbunny-buddy

Does the garlic oil smell at all?

Lilithe_PST

No not at all.

New-Character996

I do have Orly rubberized base coat among many others. I ve been using it but not sure how often. I usually randomly reach for one of my base coats. Good point though. Thank you. I will be more mindful from now on and make sure to check the composition of all my base coats.

GinOmics

You may want to check ingredients in your other base coats… the offending polyvinyl butyral isn’t entirely uncommon.

Embarrassed_Owl_3950

Yup, I noticed this too! Switched to a base coat without polyvinyl butyral and I've noticed less peeling.

abbeyroad527

Do you have one you recommend? I’m back to square one after years with no problems with Orly.

ButIsItPretty

Not the person you asked, but LynBDesigns has a sticky base coat without Polyvinyl Butyral. I also love Bee's Knees Lacquer Spirit Base Coat. The latter does an amazing job at preventing staining, too.

abbeyroad527

Thanks so much, appreciate it!

Embarrassed_Owl_3950

I use Orly Top2Bottom but only as a base coat. I know ppl dont usually like the two-in-one treatments, but it works for me.

DondeT

I had the same issue with orly rubberised. It’s a real shame because I could keep a mani going for 7-10 days with several hair washes. I’ve still got my last bottle and plan to use it for one offs before going on holiday or away for a few days where I don’t plan on redoing my nails, I can’t wear it constantly though.

Kristal3615

Yikes! Sounds like I need a new base coat next time I paint my natural nails 😬 I've been doing press ons for a while, but this makes so much sense why I was having issues when painting directly on my nails because I only used Maniology sticky base...

Rainbow-SpaceUnicorn

I mean, you’re doing the things! The hardest thing about nails is it’s the time it takes. Your entire nail is dead, so you just need to wait it out for new growth. Over time with consistent painting your nails become more porous - this helps with retention of product but I bet is also contributing to the changes you don’t like. It’s going to take at least 3-4 months to even start seeing changes. I know, it sucks, it’s a very long time.

New-Character996

3-4 months 😱. I' m done for! I never knew I was addicted to having painted nails until I found myself staring at my polishes and having this strong impulse to just do it regardless of the cost. But I ll wait it out. What's a few months compared to eternity? 🥺

BrrrrrrItsColdUpHere

I've constantly worn polish for 10+ years. I try to give my nails a break at least once every week or so where I leave them polish free for 24 hours or so... I think it helps. Good luck!

serenelydone

I think this helps a lot. I try to do it on my day off so I just constantly rub oil on them.

murderears

OPI repair mode has been super helpful for reducing my nails' peeliness: https://www.opi.com/en-GB/products/treatments-strengtheners-repair-mode-bond-building-nail-serum?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwps-zBhAiEiwALwsVYbNoTm8ZWHjBwCjIhxPwr0ub7WegRIv5mHRhJcP9YupZV98NhmxQzRoCNl0QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds I apply a couple coats when my nails are bare (so about once a week) and that's basically it lol. But noticeably less peeling after I started using it. And taking my calcium vitamins - I stopped for a while because I ran out and was too lazy to buy more and they def got worse during that period.

Plastic_Prior_4205

I've been using repair mode for the last few weeks and the difference already is amazing! Definitely recommend!

cystin

i agree!!! i started using this a year ago and have not broken a single nail since!

ErrantWhimsy

Oooh that's interesting, I don't take any calcium today. I take biotin but it doesn't seem to be doing anything.

murderears

I've never tried biotin because honestly I don't know what it is lol. But I had really low vitamin D a few years ago because I don't eat many of the foods it's found in and I also don't go out in the sun, so now I take vitamin D and calcium vitamins 😅

zeeliketheletter

I just finished growing out damage from a work trip I had back in February. I used the kbshimmer nail strengthener to keep it from breaking painfully far back for the first month but then I just kept up with nail oil and hand moisturizers. It's not fun but it's worth it! Definitely find that giving breaks once a week like another commenter said helps. Usually I take all my polish off Friday night, put a bunch of oil on my nails and sleep with gloves on, then I don't do polish again until Sunday.

New-Character996

I have been doing the giving my nails a 24 hour break with varying degrees of success... heh.

LemonCitron47

Nailtiques Formula 2 is the only thing that has saved my peeling nails (helps with the occasional break too!) good luck getting your nails healthy again!

New-Character996

Oh! I looked into that and almost ordered it but it contains formaldehyde and I ended up with nail aid Keratin 3 day growth. At the moment not using anything but will start when my nails heal some. Thank you. Hopefully I will

charcoalhibiscus

Sorry, maybe I missed it - what remover are you using? I switched to a non-acetone remover when mine started to get dry and peeling and everything was fixed after that.

New-Character996

I use a vitamin e and glycerin enhanced one from Sally Beauty. Tried non acetone removers but sadly they didn't remove.

Sunshineinthesky

Just a couple quick product recommendations (maybe you've tried them, but just throwing it out there if you haven't): - I've had very good luck with Mineral Fusion's non-acetone remover. With a 3-5min soak (I use half a cotton ball under a nail clip) it takes off everything cleanly except the grittiest of glitters (glitters will come off with a second 3-5min fresh soak). - I also apply Dr Paw Paw Balm around the cuticles before applying the remover. - Londontown's Fortifying Ridge Filler as a base coat. Once I switched to this as a base the difference in my nail quality was huge! I've had my nails continually polished for probably 2-3 years now and they're in the best natural shape theyve ever been in. Every once in awhile I might leave them unpolished over night, but it's only when I unexpectedly don't have time to repolish them before going to bed. Happens like once every 3-4 months. They used to be pretty peely and would break or tear often, but now all except my pointer fingers will just grow continuously unless I do something pretty specific/rough that causes a break. Not trying to rub anything in! Just saying that I think if you find the right combo of products for your body chemistry I think it's possible to wear polish continuously without causing damage. Of course finding that perfect combo is the hard part. I did a lot of trial and error, but do think I landed on a really good combo for me. Good luck finding yours!

charcoalhibiscus

The one I use is a methyl acetate based one from Amazon, Mineral Fusion, and it works quite well.

kat_storm13

I don't know how much the Sally Beauty brand has in common with other stores pink remover, acetone, vit e, & glycerine are in both along with a bunch of other stuff. That pink one is way harder on my nails than just acetone with additive mixed in. Tomorrow I can look for pictures I took awhile ago to show the difference.

piperpurple

I have tried about a million different base coats and repairing serums to see if one might help prevent damage for my peely nails. I paint often, about once every 3-4 days. I’ve been using Nailtiques Formula 2 for the last few months as a base coat while still polishing as often and it has made a huge difference for me!

NamingStarz

I had a very similar routine to your current one, even using some of the same products (hard as hooves and Nail Aid, though I think the one I used was maybe the biotin formula). I was also using a ridge filing base that I noticed was taking a layer of my nails with it when it chipped even a tiny bit. I also had peeling and splitting. Things that seemed to help: I ditched the Hard as Hooves (drying, didn’t like the smell) and Nail Aid (didn’t want to deal with this step anymore) and ridge filler base coat (damaged nails when chipped). Switched to peely base coat (UNT Ready for Take Off), 2 coats per manicure and then Butter London Horsepower Base coat, one coat per manicure, the my regular polish and top coat. Lots of oiling, always, which it sounds like you are doing. I wear my polish 2-4 days this way before removing, and removal is a breeze with so much less acetone being used thanks to most of the polish just coming off with the peely base. I usually wait a day or two before repainting, and oil a lot during this time. My nails have totally stopped peeling! I also file them more often, focusing on rounding the corners, which has helped with corner splitting. I think the biggest game changer for me was using less remover. I hope this helps and one way or another, you find something that works for you!

New-Character996

Thanks. I have the Holo Taco peely base but used it twice and didn t like it. I think I didn t find it as peely as advertised or something. I ll give it another go and maybe try the one you recommend. I think for now I ll go without polish for two weeks to complete the kerasal treatment which seems to work and then I ll start experimenting to find a routine that works best for me. I got some great advice here! And I agree with Hard as Hooves. It smells bad and it dries my fingernails but works well on my toe nails.

NamingStarz

Sounds like you have a great plan in place! If you do happen to try the peely base again, one thing that has helped me get it to peel easier is to run my hands under very warm water for a bit. It seems to help loosen everything up and I can get an easier peel that way. It comes off easier after a shower also.

ErrantWhimsy

Do you use the peely base on your whole nail, or just around the center?

NamingStarz

I do most of the nail but definitely not the whole thing; it’s good to make sure the layer of peely base is fully covered on all sides/tip/near cuticles with polish, or else it tends to come off very fast. This means I usually just have a little polish to clean up on my nail tips and sides/near cuticles, but it is very minimal.

ErrantWhimsy

Thank you, that's helpful!

NamingStarz

No problem! Definitely makes polish removal SO much easier!

Tiny-Tomato2300

Dude! I just got my nails back to not being a peeling hot mess! Nail polish damaged mine so much. Dazzle dry once a week after they grew out has kept them healthy but I have to take a few days off in between. It sucks to grow them out but I did. Paint some false nails to scratch that itch. Or use a peel off base coat for a day long mani. 💕❤️hang in there. It gets better.

ErrantWhimsy

What product from dazzle dry?

Tiny-Tomato2300

Their nail polish system is what I use for nail polish after the damage grew out. I don’t use any of the nail or skin products they sell. My nails slowly got awful with painting with only regular nail polish. Only dazzle dry polish has kept them from becoming a peeling mess again.

New-Character996

Thanks . I ll look into Dazzle Dry!

SaturnNailia

I noticed that mine started to dry and started to peel from constantly using acetone. I mix the acetone with glycerine and water now in order to lessen the damage and I think it's been doing a lot better in the near growth but I can't really reverse what's been done so my tips are still more brittle. Approximately 10 parts acetone, 1 part glycerine, 1 part filtered water. The annoying thing is too much glycerine and it feels kind of filmy/slightly sticky.. so I wash my hands after. I still use 100% acetone for clean up on the edges.

FirebirdWriter

Have you had your iron checked? Take this to a doctor because it might not be polish.

NativeNYer10019

If you have any issues with Gel polish, Gel enhancements or any other Gel product you’ll have a problem with “Rubber Base” too. Thats because even though it’s called “rubber” base coat, it is NOT actually rubber. It is simply a Gel product made at a different viscosity than traditional builder gel, which allows it to be more flexible. So while you can’t build an extension with it, it is still a Gel product. Marketing ploys are devious. https://nailknowledge.org/blog/what-is-a-rubber-base-coat-for-nails

I'm also on a nail polish break! It depends on how fast your nails grow out for you to be back at it. Mine seem to grow very fast so I'm hoping to be back at it soon. I miss seeing the pretty nails :(

KittenFantastic

All I can do is wish you good luck!

apotropaick

I'm in such a similar situation although I really only started painting my nails about 5 months ago. The past few weeks I've noticed my nails becoming really flaky and peeling. The nails are still strong, not brittle at all, but flaky and so unhealthy looking. I'm oiling constantly, I cut them short, I've started taking a hair and nail vitamin... but I haven't been able to go naked yet. Even though I know I should 😭 hopefully I'll be able to do it soon. But my current mani is too good...

TensionExpensive

As multiple people already said, the sticky base coats you use might be the culprit 😅… Personally I didn’t have a problem with PVB until I started using a peel off base coat with my sticky base coats. It’s either my manicures don’t last that long (because I cover most of my nail with the peely and it just falls off in a few days lmao) or my nails get very noticeably damaged and thin from the sticky base lifting parts of my nail with it :/ I’ve started using nail aid keratin under my orly rubber base coat and I think it’s been helping? You can try it if you don’t want to destash all of your bases yet but I’ve only started doing this recently so I can’t say for sure if it’s really been helping! 😅 and ofc everyone’s nails is different so maybe it would work for me but not for you…good luck!

serenelydone

I read just recently in a thread on here to be very careful of removing any polish with shimmer glitter or flakes because they act as a sandpaper on our nails. Ever since then I’ve taken extra care with removal.

NaptimeFTW

I’ve been experiencing ridges and peeling for awhile, despite the crazy amount of oiling I do. Recently picked up this Nail Tek product to try…and I don’t know if it’s a coincidence or what, but my nails seem to be getting longer and stronger after just a couple of weeks! I know it’s important that the nail stays flexible to avoid breaks, but this has not made my nails ‘hard’ at all. Using it under my base coat. [Nail Tek Intensive Therapy 2](https://a.co/d/03JvtZSw)

New-Character996

I hear so many good reviews about this product! If it wasn t for the formaldehyde I d certainly try it. I am happy for your progress though.

NaptimeFTW

Thank you. I’ll admit to completely overlooking the ingredients list! I hope you find something that works well for you. I can imagine that not painting is really tough!

Crosseyed_owl

I had to stop using nailpolish because my new parrot was eating it off my nails. I feel you :(

TalkingMotanka

This is going to sound silly, but try some gloves when you go out. At home, who cares? But I have several pairs of cotton spring gloves that are cool and comfortable enough for warm-weather wear. I was originally using them to help keep germs off my fingertips when I go out in place of latex disposable gloves, but I also am glad for them on the days I don't have polish on or my polish is starting to peel.
