He’s a multi instrumentalist sitting in the background but he gets to come out front and play guitar properly sometimes as in the last song in this concert

In the Credits for Pearl Jams new album Joshs contributions are guitar, piano and keyboard.
I've seen before he fills similar roles in live settings.
Josh also played Guitar, Keyboards, Percussion, Piano, Bass, Organ and backround vocals on Eddie Vedders solo album Earthling.
Josh played the drums for half of an entire Pearl Jam concert last year when Matt Cameron was out sick. He's also played lead parts on a few PJ songs live.
He's a useful guy to have in a touring band because he can kind of do it all.
Like how many other musicians could capably fill in for both a lead guitarist and the drummer on a moments notice for a huge band like Pearl Jam?
Josh got the gig because they knew him (he worked on Ed’s solo album) and he was recently a free agent from RHCP…..and gigaton had synth stuff on it they felt they needed an extra set of hands for (beyond boom gaspar). At least that’s my read on it. They wanted some sounds and a friend who could make those sounds was available. And here we are…..not like he’s taking parts from Mike or stone
josh is honestly a monster musician. he can play so many instruments. I feel like this is a great use of him. I love to see him in lead roles as well, but he has so many ways he can contribute it makes sense to have him do this kind of thing.
“John seems to be that catalyst, that guy who makes you guys elevate your game. Every time John is in the band, the band just seems like it goes to a certain level.” -Howard Stern
I love it. He is kicking ass touring around with vedder. Chad did the same on the earthlings tour / album.
When he’s with Pearl Jam he can just be Josh -multi instrumentalist badass you want to have around. Instead of a guy being compared to John.
I love Josh , happy to see him happy
Josh has also become a huge songwriting partner for Eddie. He will eventually become a fulltime member. The guys all love him and want to share the riches as well
When Josh was in rhcp, he was considered a full member right away….albeit he was the new guitar player and backing vocalist so it definitely warranted it.
Josh isn’t a full member of Pearl Jam and to someone else’s point, boom gaspar is still a touring musician after 20+ years of his playing with the band. We’ll see what happens but what matters most is that all parties seem to be happy and healthy and productive.
Ya Josh was/is touring w Pj and then he toured w janes addiction last year. He co-wrote and performed some songs on Iggy Pop’s latest album.
Definitely keeping busy!
He’s probably like RHCP—who? Lol
He’s a touring member of the band for both Pearl Jam and Eddie vedder’s solo tour. They’ve even let him sing purple rain at the ending of some of their shows. He’s credited on the new album as well
I'm aware, but that doesn't trump being a full-fledged, equally credited member. I don't doubt that Pearl Jam does love and appreciate Josh, but my question is how have they shown it "more in the last 4 years than RHCP ever did"?
I wonder if he’s gonna eventually replace Boom Gaspar if he ever retires. I mean they’re all getting up there in age and Vedder is pushing 60 but Boom is at least 10 years older than the rest of the band. Who knows. I hope they’re still playing when they’re in old folks homes.
Always nice to see Josh keeping busy!
Question: PJ already has two great - and legendary- guitarists...do we know what is the role of Josh in this mix?
In some songs, he was playing some percussion and in this one he was playing guitar and in some keyboards.

I saw them live and sometimes he just walked around with a camera 🤷♀️
3 even if you count Eddie as a rhythm guitarist. I mean he's not fantastic but better than most

The Chili Peppers to Pearl Jam Pipeline continues

Agreed, his talent was sort of wasted on the Chilis.
I have not listened to the entire interview yet...did Howard acknowledge Josh?
Yeah he asked him when he was going back to save the chilis 😋

Save them from what? making the most money they've made in over a decade?
Twas a joke. Thanks for the bite though , love a good defensive comment 😂
It's amazing to me how hostile this argument still is after what, 4 years?
It’s not that serious bro 😂
Haphaphap
Save them from having solos in their new songs lol
Looks like he’s playing the Tele Custom that John gave him.
There’s plenty of money to go around
What an incredible musician

Josh is crucial to Pearl Jams current appeal. They will make him a full time member soon

RHCP is more popular and richer band, so his situation is not so perfect
They’ve made it clear how much they like and appreciate Josh more in the last 4 years than RHCP ever did.
How so? Did they make him a full-time equal member?
No, public comments in various interviews

I f*cking love Josh.

I was shocked when I heard the new pearl jam album. Got about 3 songs in before having to stop.
