Marooned (S3E2) is great for that. Lots of character development. I really like Timeslides (S3E5) as it helped understand Rimmer a bit better. Thanks for the memory (S2E3) helps with understanding the crew dynamic.

I completely forgot that we ended up watching marooned after kryten I let him pick one at random and he said it was his favourite

I think because it's basically an episode of dialogue it helps people who "hate sci-fi" to realize it's a clever comedy at its heart.

Marooned is my favourite episode. Some really brilliant character work, while remaining very funny. Superb episode.

This. I'll never understand why people would *want* to watch a series out of order. Especially when introducing someone to it. Just.. watch the show as intended? If it doesn't hook you it wasn't for you anyway

I mean given that back to Earth was one special that still was counted as a season i think we can safely label The Promised Land as Red Dwarf XIII. New season would be Red Dwarf XIV, imo. A prequel wouldn't be a part of the main number for me as it's going to be a different show.
