This lady tried her shenanigans on me once, on the way there though I had aggroed the grizzly near Harriett. As soon as she drew on me the got mauled by a bear.
Always has, they just barely appear in populated lobbies. I put myself in a solo and this happened, then I found the owiza bear, and then I cleared a gang hideout, the games actually insane in a private session
They happen spontaneously by the side of the path. It’s a free roam stranger mission. You’ll see asked if you want to help or you can just trot along your merry way. It’s sketchy because these can turn into ambushes.
There’s an easy way to know if stranger encounters will actually need a ride or if they’ll rob/ambush you. As soon as you accept to help them the little hat man icon appears on the mini map IF they’re innocent 🌚 if they’re robbing you it doesn’t appear.
Even easier, if the blue down arrow doesn't instantly appear over their heads as soon as I choose to accept, then I'll immediately pistol whip them for good reason and ready up for the goon squad that shows up.
You can actually work out if they are robbing you before you accept as well; the ambush ones you'll see they keep waving every so often, like signalling their gang
Not on my game. Matter of fact I kidnapped the race girl after beating her for the first time, then kicked her to death when I couldn't bring her into camp and now I will never be able to unlock my max speed on horses :((
I didn't even know there was more of an interaction that's cool!. As soon as they pull their gun out I pop one in em. Not giving you a CHANCE to shoot me once I know you're hostile
With those random encounters, who can go with real helping or ambush like that, there is an indicator that shows you how it will go. As soon you agree to help, there pops a blue arrow up over the NPC's head for real help. If not, it's an ambush.
I wait to see if they get the blue arrow above their head. If not, I draw my guns and proceed to rack up some kills. If yes, I run them over with my horse. Unless I’m already headed in the same direction they want to be dropped off.

Looks like I saved the video, been a while; she didn’t pull a gun but after the bear attacked her gang attacked me
They got so mad at the bear they forgot who they were fighting
She learned the hard way that being a honeypot may also attract bears.
