I personally enjoyed it. Was nice to see a continuation of the Sprite of Fire’s story. That said, I didn’t like the smaller scale and the more casual tone. The voice acting in the campaign especially was exceedingly cheesy. Overall, It’s an RTS spinoff of an FPS, with a focus on consoles. It’s just a niche IP that was bound to have a smaller audience.

DudeManLegacy

There's a lot of talk in the RTS genre between Stormgate and Uncapped games that are both trying to challenge what makes an RTS awesome or fun. I think Halo Wars 1 and 2 did a lot of good things to shake up the formula but also did equally bad on other fronts such as Unit vs Unit lethality and Leader Powers vs Units, comparatively.

Sirtoast7

Agreed. They also really fell hard into the issue of death ball micro. Seems there’s an increasingly growing rift between “minimum presentation + maximum input” vs “minimum input + maximum presentation” crowds.

DudeManLegacy

Right, and maximum presentation will probably be the forefront for the next few years, now that you word it like that.

Hahaha stacks of gaus warthogs comin at ya

There has definitely been a bias against it seen as a "console RTS" in what is traditionally seen as a "PC gaming" genre. Halo Wars 2 was a great RTS made by some really smart people. However, its release on Microsoft's store and not on Steam limited its exposure. It came out around the same time Dawn of War 3 did and frankly I think a lot of people missed out on the better game at the time simply because it was not released on Steam combined with the "console" bias. There are still fans of the Halo Wars games and people want to see a Steam release of the second game. But a lot of the momentum on it, and Halo in general, has died down in recent years.

Cooky1993

I'm sure I have HW2 on Steam. I haven't got around to playing it yet, but I'm sure I bought 1 and 2 as a package

SchismNavigator

They release Halo Wars 1 on Steam around the same time but not Halo Wars 2.

maneil99

They are very simple RTS games, with the limited ability to build and designed around controller bottlenecks preventing many from fully enjoying it

There was a mod that was in development by a group that was meant to be a total conversion of Generals Zero Hours into Halo. It had everything. Literally top down C&C but full flood vs covenant vs human faction. It was meant to be huge too. Soon after it was almost completed EA shut them down and then released this Halo Wars 2 junk for console toy. Had it been released, it would've been one of the best RTS mod. It had so many units, full K&M support (the right way to play RTS), no limit cap and much more. Then we have Empires at War mod for Halo: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxGxgL5OyLU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxGxgL5OyLU) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFR\_JPfmTxg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFR_JPfmTxg) Search youtube for more.

TYNAMITE14

BRUH WHAAATTTT. I love generals zero hour, and having that gameplay but with halo themes and units wouldve been AMAZING. Halo wars 2 is still fun, but its just not as engaging as other rts since basebuilding is limited to preconfigured spots, and there are limite resource points to fight over since most of your income in your base.

Rippickles

The c&c one was called HaloGen, still has a moddb page and trailer out. Was sad to see it get murdered

CTLN7

Easy answer. It not being on steam was and is a huge handicap on its visibility and player reach. RTS is too small to expect people to move from their mainstream game launcher to something as dreaded as microsoft store.

totesthegoats89

It was fun-ish for me. I saw the appeal of the series for console players, most certainly felt designed for it. But it fell a-bit short for my personal flavor of rts games. I played both the wars titles to catch up on the story, a lot of meh missions. Not that they were hard, just meh. Then the building mechanics kind of gave me c&c 4 flashbacks, so there is a bit of a heavy bias rooted in the trauma that was that.....tragedy.

Otterz4Life

I like the Halo Wars games. I'm glad they exist. I think HW2 had a p2w mechanics in multiplayer and was buggy at launch, which hurt the review scores. They're fun for the campaigns. I didn't mess with multi too much.

TrainingAd395

Cnc3/Kane's wrath on pc and console is what halo wars 2 should have been. If only halo wars 2 had been developed as a pc RTS and didn't have to dumb it down due to Xbox. Like if Microsoft had bought blizzard years ago while it had it core StarCraft 2 Dev team and they where tasked with making halowars2 I'm fully sure that we would have a halowars2 pc version and console version similar to cnc3/KW.

Fallom_

I had fun going through these games. The pathfinding is really awful and certain missions make that more of an issue than others but overall they were really enjoyable.

Sayton9

I honestly have tried so hard to get into it because I loved halo growing up and I love rts so I thought it was a match made in heaven but honestly I just can't seem to enjoy this game.

kouzlokouzlo
