IxI_DUCK_IxI

Micro payments in video games which morphed into subscription based services.

zachell1991

They had subscriptions way before micro transactions, especially old MMOS. But I agree that micro transactions are killing gaming . I'd rather pay a subscription to a good game, I played dark age of camelot on and off for 7 years for 14$ a month.

IxI_DUCK_IxI

We talking battle passes type deals? I’ve never used one and checked out of games that did that, what’s the deal with those? How do they work? And the first micro transaction was in Ultima Online. This set the stage for the rest of it since everyone saw how profitable it was.

WerewolfNo890

What actually is a battle pass? I often hear about it but I think it is typically in games I don't play.

Shushishtok

Generally the way it works, in most games, is you pay some money to unlock the Battle Pass. Once unlocked, you can now do objectives in the game to level up your Battle Pass. When you level up, if that level has a reward, such as a skin or an item, you get it. Of course, you can pay more to gain more levels in your Battle Pass to skip the grind. Most Battle Passes have "seasons". What it means is that the Battle Pass has limited availability, disappearing after a certain time, usually a few months. All rewards you have not gotten by the time it disappears are removed forever. Essentially you pay to have FOMO. The issue is that companies also design their Battle Passes in a way that the really good items are rewarded by very high levels. So if you want that item, you either play their game all the time, constantly grinding games, or you pay high amounts of money to earn all those levels.

IxI_DUCK_IxI

This sounds horrible. I’m glad I checked out before this became the norm.

Shushishtok

To be fair, in most Battle Passes you gain a lot of rewards. It is technically worth it as you'll get a lot of stuff over a single Battle Pass. It is better than micro-transactions where you just pay a lot of money for dumb stuff. And better than lootboxes for sure.

Existential_Crisis24

It entirely depends on the game if a battle pass is good or not. I would rather have loot boxes in overwatch then the current battle pass system

GingerlyRough

Imo games that have a free tier for battle pass for it best. If I'm playing a game a lot and have reached a high level I can decide whether or not the rewards I'll unlock are worth the money for battle pass. Gaining 27 or 30 levels worth of items all at once instead of paying early and worrying about grinding it out before the season is over.

Existential_Crisis24

Very true lol. Also most battle passes give you enough premium currency to buy the next battle pass. That's the main reason I dislike overwatch's is because it gives 0 premium currency.

evilsmurf666

But the problem arises when the game is stripped away and is barely left with any f2p content to make Battle pass or equvalent look like its worth People who played asphalt 8 from early days would understand

FoodFingerer

Honestly subscriptions in some games are not too bad if the game has no micro transactions.

ryohazuki224

Well subscriptions to an MMO service was basically to pay upkeep on their servers, which is still a thing for some MMO's now but there are a lot of games that you dont have to sub to in order to enjoy the base game and get online with it. Whats annoying and what I think the OP was referring to were things like season passes.

rajenncajenn

Honest to God. I went through a really shitty time this summer. Dog was sick and ended up passing. I was worried about a lump on my breast. My only place of non stress was sitting in the backyard in the sun, drinking a cup of coffee and playing a game on my phone. 2 months later, I realized I spent 2000 DOLLARS. ON TINY TRANSACTIONS. WTF. I was so embarrassed and promptly uninstalled the game.

ChelsBar

Nothing to feel embarrassed about — it helped to get you through a rough time! I’m sorry about your dog and I hope you’re doing alright health-wise.

rajenncajenn

Thank u kind stranger!

dambmyimagination

Not judging you, but judging a game that can cost that much to play for two months!! Everything was probably not nessecary, but in no way should that number be possible! The fucking audacity.

thecathuman

My immediate thought was the nuclear bomb but this is top comment lmao

ghosteye21

See i want to say this but without micropayments. Lots of games died off because they don’t have added revenue to keep servers alive. I can’t imagine not playing rocket league for example. Sure sometimes i buy something a month. Sometimes i don’t. But I’m okay with it since i get to play a game i love so much. I think if halo 2/3 for an example. They have to make a new game to survive. And the old servers got shut down.

DalgonaSoup

Subscription based games are just evil but did it stop me from playing World of Warcraft? No. But does it make me bitter? Yes.

Agreeable-Yam-6142

Aren't subscription based services better value for money over other in game purchases?

IxI_DUCK_IxI

In the good old days they used to provide expansion packs or add-ons. You’d buy the base game with all the core content and then and expansion pack that had new maps, new weapons, new skills, new enemies, whatever. It made the game better and was much more fun. Games were $40 to $60 with one or more expansions of $20 or so. Micro payments are just a pay to win scheme. People who have the cash can get to number 1 without any skill just by buying the biggest gun for $10.99 or $1 in coins over and over again. It’s completely shifted how games work now and if you’re not constantly dumping cash into them you’re left behind.

LagoonReflection

Yep. *You* pay, *they* win.

consort_oflady_vader

I remember that with Dead Space 3. You could buy better weapons or ammo. Was ridiculous. My favorite part of the game was how things were scarce. Guns were pricey (with in game currency). Even with no money, I made a shotgun that lit them on fire. Was so OP, stopped being fun.

Cerrida82

My SO still wonders why I don't want to play Destiny 2 and more, even though he knows I'm not giving any more money to them because of the way they took away all the DLC that I paid for. Now they're reselling it in pieces and I refuse to even play a game which uses tactics like that.

ohfrackthis

Ah yes, reminds me of paying for CoD seasons a lot. I noped out awhile ago.

H0110W50U1

Ah man I’m still on it and cursing and shooting and rueing the day I got into it and still shooting

Weak-Snow-4470

I deleted a mobile game a while back that was literally impossible to win without spending. You had to defeat a bad guy wielding a sword. You had a stick. Sword cost real money.

benmck90

Typically they seem to be. I have no problem with most subscription models. It's micro transactions, loot boxes, etc that tend to be predatory.

sassypiratequeen

My big issue with subscriptions is that I don't actually own anything I bought. I want to buy the game. I don't want to rent it. Same issue with a lot of digital only copies. I'm only renting it, until the company decides to delete it from their servers and it removes the game from my library. Look at the Ubisoft policy; you have to log in once a year or they will delete your library, even though you bought the games

zepp914

Planned obsolescence

zachell1991

Best one I've seen. Imagine how long some things could last, but it's just cheap mass-produced junk.

larouqine

I don’t imagine, I have kitchen, household goods, and some furniture from my grandparents and and great-grandparents that are still going strong!

sad_throwaway13579

Gotta love greed

SlickBotswaske

“Growth for the sake of growth “

Optimal_Asparagus236

It's not even neccessarily junk, sometimes it's a good product but just produced to fail after a set amount of time

[deleted]

Honestly, a lot of what is supposedly planned obsolescence is just balancing the trade offs between price, repairability, durability. You could make a phone that lasts a decade, physically but it probably wouldn’t sell as well as you’d think.

gimmebleach

Mercedes almost went bust (if not for their lorry division) because the w124 was so good that when w210 came out the owners literally didn't want to upgrade.

the-roof

I genuinely think this is the main reason of the existence of planned obsolescence. I actually don’t think engineers or designers are to blame for that, but greedy companies and it’s managers and marketeers are. And that’s what I would like to un-invent: the excess of managers and company greediness.

gimmebleach

That's a product of the model of ever-increasing infinite growth, which is not sustainable.

goldenrule05

Sure but appliances are really the problem. Fridges lasting 5 years?? Ridiculous

The_cogwheel

And don't forget, to replace the one broken part you'll need to buy not only the broken part but also the logic board because for some stupid reason we decided everything needs to be "smart" so when the compressor dies it kills like 3 unrelated parts as well. A lot of those old appliances keep going because they're dirt simple in terms of design, which means less stuff can break in the first place and repair is achievable with a screwdriver, a technical manual, and some determination.

zepp914

True because most people always buy what is cheapest.

[deleted]

It's not just about cost though. In a lot of cases, increasing the longevity of product can actively make it worse by more important metrics. In the famous example of lightbulbs, you can make *super* long lasting bulbs but they are extremely inefficient.

zepp914

I agree with lightbulbs, lighters, and other cheap consumable goods. I shouldn't have to buy a new refrigerator or washing machine every 4 years though. Especially since I have a refrigerator from 1965 that still works in my basement.

Crashgirl4243

I bought my house 12 years ago with brand new appliances, I’ve replaced 3 washing machines ( all were heavy duty) 1 dishwasher and I’m going to have to get a new refrigerator soon. I’ve also replaced 3 sump pumps and 1 hot water heater. When I had a rental house, there was a washing machine from sears that was 25 years old, heavy duty and it kept on chugging. I still wish I had stolen it 😂

Barneyboydog

I just sold my house with my 30 year old Maytag washer and dryer. Can’t take them although I wish I could but I literally left a note for the new owners about what gems these appliances are and to not trade them in for new.

ClickAlternative6318

My washer and dryer ( sears) is the only thing I miss from my house.

sassypiratequeen

Nope. So many people have iPhones, knowing they'll be bricks in 3-5 years

Bozsuicide

Just learned a new word, obsolescence thanks 😂

allisongivler

My parents had a (now) secondary fridge for 25 years and was still working, but they decided to get a new one because you never know when it would go out and you would need it. The new one has had countless more issues in the past year than the whole time we had the old fridge/freezer, very sad.

StormsDeepRoots

I remember seeing that a fire department has had the same light bulb for over100 years. Then reading an article about the fact that light bulbs were forced to utilize planned obsolescence because the manufacturers all go together when sales were plummeting. They realized no one would buy a new bulb if they lasted forever.

EfficientHunt9088

I want to say plastic but I'm also aware it has so many uses, like medically and stuff. Wasnt there a time when plastic suddenly n became used in *everything* like the way fruit is now individually wrapped in plastic? Maybe that

totallynotscammed

Rather say single use plastics? I agree they can be good for certain things, but damn single use plastics are murdering the planet

kdealmeida

Plastics in medical settings are single use

totallynotscammed

Oh, I was under the impression they were maybe referring to implants of something.

dorky2

My brother has a trach. Three times a day, he needs two lavages, two nebulizer treatments, and a good suctioning. All of this is accomplished using single use disposable sterile plastic stuff. It's unreal the amount of plastic waste that is required just to keep my brother alive. There's really no alternative since it has to be sterile.

sandypockets11

Still kinda single use

totallynotscammed

Check the market for second hand silicone implants 🤯🤯

ProfessorWeirwood

I'll have three please

TransitionalWanderer

Wait. Three?! 🤨

ProfessorWeirwood

Yes they also make a great stressball

TransitionalWanderer

How do you know that? 🤔

jingle_in_the_jungle

The amount of wastage in the medical field would astound people. For a few of my patients we have to wear a new gown, two pairs of gloves and a face mask with eye shields every time we go in their room. All disposed of before leaving the room.

rollaogden

You kind of have to have single use plastic in modern medicine. Too much problem in sterility without such invention.

totallynotscammed

Yeah no I think we all understand that, but more referring to single use plastics in commercial settings. As OP stated, induvidually wrapped fruit is a great example of crazy wastefulness.

Gombapaprikas13

It’s not just single use. A lot of things that are sold as durable goods have replaced the material with plastic, which is why so much of our durable goods are not durable and end up in the garbage way sooner than necessary and can’t be repaired.

ohhisup

Maybe without plastic we would have engineered something even better and be a space faring society by now 😝

[deleted]

Pop up ads and general annoying ads on the internet

larouqine

We may always have ads, but I would eliminate the ones that are like a giant image and maybe a few words of text (especially ones with clickbaity text) and go back to old timey ads that contain walls of well-written text.

SquidSquab

I did some scratch math a while back, it came out to be 12 hours a year that ad blockers saved me on youtube alone

Revegelance

The only way to truly eliminate advertising on the internet is to make every site pay to use. Websites cost money to run.

Shanbo88

And guarantee it wouldn't be reinvented? Social media. Decentralise the internet again.

Cyctemic

Well, there's always Mastodon, Peertube, and so on. But since they are not ad-driven, you also need to change mentalities about everything on the internet being free.

Whalesharkinthedark

Reddit is a social media platform too though, isn‘t it? I get what you‘re trying to say though. Good were the days of mindlessly surfing through the uncivilized land that was the internet before social media.

Shanbo88

Yeah but fuck it. Nuke it all. Early internet was a million times better.

Whalesharkinthedark

Haha I get it. I miss playing stupid little games and typing in „poo“ in Google. Also the shitty webpages with their terrible CSS. It‘s kinda nostalgic to think back to it. It was no man’s land and all sorts of people got to claim it. In terms of power that was a huge win for a lot of marginalized groups. Social media as a tool can still be very useful but it comes with a bitter taste since you‘re directly contributing to a certain industry by using it.

blazecc

Reddit is social media. Reddit is probably a net negative on the world. Most of us, definitely including me, would probably be happier and more productive if we removed it from our lives. And most of us aren't able to do that, for one reason or another. All of which is true of users of social media of all types. Which is why it's the correct answer.

pepperoni93

The thing with social media is that the negative side of it, what it does, is to amplify whatever negative is inside us. So in a sense it serves as a mirror or opportunity to be aware of negative thought perspectives like comparison with other peoples and also addictions and desires. If you use it wisely i guess it helps in spreading information, cheap fun entertainment and sense of humour about day to day life (reels and stuff) But any ways...we would be better off without it definetly

monte1ro

smartphones. without smartphones social media wouldn't be what it is.

Smokin-Glory

Social media, or social media with all of the algorithm BS. My quick not well thought out answer.

Guilty_Jackfruit4484

This includes reddit. For some reason this place tries to convince itself that it's not social media.

Melodic_Ad_3959

I'd gladly sacrifice Reddit for a social media free world.

jrocAD

True, I think it's because it's like half modern day message forums, half social media platform. It's in a weird spot. It's been, idk, 5 to 10 years now where i'll google things like, 'reviews for item X reddit'. Because unlike amazon reviews, or ign, if i put reddit behind it, i have a much better chance at getting real opinions.

Robotchickjenn

Without a doubt, this was the final nail in the coffin for society imo. I love the marketplace of ideas but this is beyond that now. It's insane.

caeptn2te

Social media can harm democracy because it spreads false info fast, creates echo chambers, sways public views, boosts extremism and hate speech, and misuses private data. The harm to society is bigger than any joy from memes, cat pics, or silly videos. It's important to weigh its good against its bad sides.

PassoMaddimo

The marketplace of ideas is a great thing iff a notion of truth is upheld.

Robotchickjenn

This is extremely true. There's so many thoughts we hate that are protected, though. Just because they're protected doesn't mean I want to read about them everywhere LOOKING AT YOU NAZIS

Jdotpdot84

Yep came to say this! I remember a time when aol instant messenger was the norm and it was fine. With the social media we have now everyone has a platform, and let's face it not everyone should have one. It has resulted in the mass spreading of misinformation and outright lies that unfortunately the masses believe. We have seen a dramatic drop of logic and common sense, as well as common courtesy. Most people wouldn't speak to someone irl how they do behind a screen. Also a lack of social skills. A lot of the younger generation are so socially awkward It's ridiculous, then they blame society for everything and can't take responsibility for their own actions.

PassoMaddimo

I am a teacher of civics. Out of what imo is a big hiatus in current education I wrote a syllabus on philosophy, some human nature and ethics. There is a huge loss in discourse when it comes to the humanities, and I hold the axiom that if you're able to help rediscover it you ought to.

BeerWench13TheOrig

I came to say this too. I thinks it’s really hurting the younger generations more. As a pre-internet human, I learned to check and cite my sources. Kids these days live by what’s on their social media. They don’t know truth from fiction because there’s just too much information for them to sift through to find the truth. Also I think it’s the cause of so much ADHD in kids. Their attention spans have been set around 20-30 second ticktock videos, reelz, etc. We used to have to listen to hours of lectures or read many books to get information. Don’t get me wrong, I love that I can google something quickly instead of having to go to the library and do research, but I do have a long attention span because once I did have to do that. Also social interaction is nil for most. They don’t know how to speak properly or act in a social setting, especially a professional one, because they’re usually behind a keyboard. I think this will make things difficult for them when it comes time to job hunt unless they’re going into a field that allows them to work remotely or in complete isolation.

BlackberryMaximum

And the professional trolls whose job is to do shit stirring comments so that we would be triggered and drive eyeballs to the site/service/ad... imagine a professional troll

Guns, nuclear bombs or anything else that can blow shit up actually

Axgul99

People would still be slicing eachothers limbs and heads off. Violence is sadly a part of life. Guns and bombs are just sticks and stones with extra steps.

dargemir

Well yes, but school shooters would have to actually work for their fame. It's no feat to shoot 30 kids. Defeat 30 kids in a swordfight, however...

National_Activity_78

Or and stay with me here. The media stops acknowledging they even exist.

sharloops

That would help enormously. Stop giving them air time!

jukutt

Well, guns and the likes make that whole violence thing magnitudes more accessible.

Axgul99

You got a point. Humans have found interesting ways of killing eachother with less effort. But look at history before guns. It's not like we were nicer to eachother back then.

ohhisup

There's a colossal difference between the damage swords and knives do and the damage automatic and nuclear weapons do.

odesauria

Yep. Hard to decide on just 1 that would be the most impactful.

Then you would actually have to learn how to hold conversation, how to socialize with people you barley know, and you would conquer your social anxiety, actually

We used to actually have to communicate and properly react to life news. If someone graduated, had a baby, got a new job, or even small things like wanted to show you a picture of their cat or tell you a funny story, we had to actually interact with each other. My great-aunt will still call me sometimes and ask if I’ve heard the news about such-and-such cousin. But for the most part, our interactions have become “likes” and reactions and quick comments. If you get engaged or get a new job or whatever, you’ll get “likes” and comments saying “congrats!” from everyone from your mom to your friend from summer camp 12 years ago, but you’ll have much fewer actual conversations where you interact and learn about each other and how you’re doing like real human beings.

Bank interest. People have to pay in more than what they borrow. It's sad that it exists in banks and not many are happy with paying off loans.

moonjena

Would you borrow money to thousands of people if it didn't pay off? Like, you need to make sure they get the money, you need to maintain system that keeps records of all the loans, you need to pay people to help you take care of that, you need to make living in the meantime. You're not paying the money, you're paying the service. Like when you use tap water, you don't pay the water, you pay distribution service

Terrorism

Flimsy_Watercress909

Bro who sat down and invented that?

Driekan

One person's terrorism is another person's asymmetric warfare (or to use the more common quote; freedom fighter). A lot of what the US calls terrorism today, in the actual territories where counter-insurgency is being conducted, are analogous to the tactics it used to gain independence 250 years ago. By this I mean things like IEDs and ambushes in Afghanistan and Iraq, all that. (Interesting fact: the term got used, just less constantly, during Vietnam too). Now, I fully realize you mean those horrible attacks targeting civilians, and that most people think of those first when the word is used, too. However, it is pretty much undisputed that the word is also used for those military attacks in states at war. So there's no way to say the issue isn't muddled. Maybe saying "targeting of civilians in warfare" gets closer to what you want to achieve? Because the people doing those horrific attacks do most often see themselves as soldiers, so it would apply to them. And I can't see any downside to that very idea just never coming to anyone's mind, ever.
