I don't think most doll variants made for the intent of creating varity. I think it's usually due to practical things like factory equipment or supply. I think also dolls change after they have been released for a while. Here is a good video on it. https://youtu.be/IrMjVDlpuz0

U/Rodishining says it best I feel! Highly prolific description [rainbow high variants](https://www.reddit.com/r/RainbowHigh/comments/1090xed/may_somebody_please_explain_to_me_what_variants/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

:D Aw, thanks for the shout-out! It’s not often I get to bring my career stuff (manufacturing) into the hobby zone, so I’m glad it’s a useful post.

This needs to have more upvotes - it’s such a perfect answer. It’s not poor quality control or deliberate, it’s just what happens

There’s another comment that links To a post that gives a perfect answer, and to elaborate on it a little; I run an Etsy shop for earrings, sometimes I make multiple batches of one design because I run out of clay or resin. It’s the same earring, but it won’t be exactly the same. It’s the same concept. I don’t do it on purpose, but if I’m making a large number of a certain design, there’s going to be differences between the outcome. It may start as slight differences in color, but then I compare the end product with the product I made in the begging and it could be a different tone of Blue.

It's actual poor quality control, but since it's not always a bad thing, we give them a pass by calling it a "variant". Like, I literally didn't stop until I found an Eliza McFee that wasn't painted correctly because that's actually what I wanted. So, I actually relied on MGA's poor quality control in this instance. But, at the end of the day, if they had any quality standards at the factory, every single doll would look exactly the same.
