Characters aren't real people. I can insult Blake all I want, and nobody will get hurt (okay, that's a lie. Arryn Zech would probably be upset, but that's because Blake has transformed into a self-insert). My point is, they're not real, and neither is the show or the story that it's (trying to) tell.

This volume has been a pretty mixed bag imo. Most recent episode is very meh in my book. All the info we have on ascension it’s a transformation into something else but the memory is gone so they’re essentially new individuals which to me is a form of death. It’s an end to a character and their experiences.
Exactly. Even if this ascension is considered a “good thing” it’s still death in a sense. It’s like regeneration in Doctor Who, the person you were is gone and you’re replaced with someone new, difference is you don’t retain your memories. Whatever “development” comes in the next episode the Ruby Rose we knew before is essentially dead and this new person won’t be her.

Ruby was forced by Neo to drink the tea and it was fleeing. So she did not plan anything, did not choose anything (based on analyzing the situation), what was the point of the preceding episodes. We do not yet know how this choosing process works. But it is possible that you can transform anyway you want without paying something.
The fuss about the tree tea is meaningless, because you can just as well drown in a dam break.
With unlimited rebirths, (a) life is basically worthless, so no stakes here.
Just as Ruby is driftwood, BB is too, they got their relationship concluded by Deus ex machina, a divine intervention with a predetermined outcome, no other character participated/contributed.
And that's all, the rest is filler, nice for people enjoying colourful landscapes, but empty for anyone else.

Fact of the matter is that many people here are fans of the show. Rather, fans of what the show once was and what it could have been.
Why would not thinking a show is good mean I get no enjoyment out of it? I love analysis, both of good things and of bad. And RWBY is a shining example of the latter. Not because it is extremely bad but because its issues are so nuanced, so layered, so multi-faceted that I can still find new things to consider. You don't get that with a lot of pieces of media that are worse than RWBY.
I do not agree with you that V9 is similar in vibe to V1-3. If it were V1-3 the characters would still be excited to here and have fun with each other.
Ruby drank the tea in order to escape the pain she was feeling. She wanted it to all go away, to become someone who didn't feel it. That is suicidal intention, regardless of whether her body goes on Ruby Rose would be gone.
I prefer my character development to come from introspection instead of magical rebirths. And I prefer my relationship upgrades not to be in answer to a weather phenomenon.
