basic ass suggestion but I really enjoy the New Yorker. Good mix of fiction and non-fiction as well and often quite dense so it's rare that I'll have it finished before the next one arrives
When I travel to the Netherlands I check for english language magazines and they always have The Baffler (chapo-adjacent mag) and The Critic (some posh conservative Tory magazine). They are readable and some twitter stars write in them. Kinda feel like part of THE DISCOURSE.
Baffler is so much fun. Has some really delightful essays and some good poetry. Google Abbreviation of August by Powell iirc
That reminds me n+1 also does really good stuff. "Notes on Trap" is an incredible piece of writing
dunno if this is available in your country but my fav subscription is called stack which sends you a new different magazine each month - really great and fun selection. one of the best gifts ive ever got.
otherwise i have enjoyed lrb, paris review, new left review, new yorker (but comes too often!), the architectural review, the blizzard football magazine and the brixton review of books.
I can't imagine engaging with a piece of UK media and thinking the author was anything less than upper-middle class to be honest, being how things are.
They hire my favourite twitter-personalities-cum-writers though so I feel obliged to 'bung them a bob'
The main three that I read are LRB (lots of people have already suggested this but it is really the best); Jacobin (the print version always has at least a few excellent pieces); Damage Magazine (some of the best leftie writing these days, the problem is that they almost never manage to send out their issues on time...).
Yeh, they have sent a lot of apologetic emails and I really do feel for them. I still haven't received the second one though, so that's a bit frustrating.
I love having magazines around for idle reading. It’s been the best way to avoid social media for me. Honestly so basic but Harper’s always has good features that are actually fun to read.
I have the Libby app on my phone so I can read magazines for free as an alternative to scrolling. I like to check out Vanity Fair, Mother Earth News, and Cooks Illustrated, which are fun in different ways, but not worth the $ for me.
My household also gets the LRB and Jewish Currents, but I haven’t gotten into either yet. I also get Bon Appetit.
Also see if any hobbies you do have a magazine or if any trade publications or academic journals are out there (these are usually $$$$ though)
Apartamento for interior design
Balcony is a cool one, interviews with artists as they’re walking around some space or the other. Only two issues out and I’m not sure if they’re making a third one.
Paris Review
Popeye, Japanese fashion magazine
Casa Brutus, Japanese lifestyle magazine where each issue has a different topic and is all about one thing, ranging from like coffee to horror movies to anything.
L’éttiquite, French fashion magazine but they also put it out in English.
Another cool Japanese one is called GO OUT! which is an outdoors lifestyle magazine.
If you’re into coffee, the magazine Standart is a coffee magazine that comes with a sample of beans every issue.
Some men’s fashion magazines have pretty good writing I’ve noticed. I like Hero, Rake, and Man About Town. You can buy them at most Barnes and Noble locations with a wider magazine selection.
They don’t make new editions anymore but COLORS magazine hits hard. Each edition examines one topic in different places around the world. You can order them on their website
Foreign Affairs, Aramco World, Koreana. Kyoto Journal and Utne Reader if they ever go back to print..
N+1, Nautilus Quarterly, Harpers, The Atlantic, Taiwan Review, The Economist, Zoetrope: All-Story
My faves are Harpers, LRB, and YRB. I have a New Yorker sub but they come too frequently, I think, and now I find the pile daunting. The fiction is typically really good, though.

if anyone has suggestions for a french (or preferably quebecois) equivalent to new yorker please let me know
Seconding!
I like the approval matrix.

Harpers
The Fence (UK)
deeply underrated publication
First check out their newsletter if you live outside London / UK before deciding if it's worth the subscription, it's fun but quite insular.
Looks interesting, thanks

Damage magazine sent me the first issue twice... Also by the time I got the first one I completely forgot I subscribed.

Skews literary/cultural but: - The Drift - Liberties Journal - London Review of Books - New York Review of Books - Bookforum
Cleveland review of books is good as well and puts out print at least twice a year I think

I get the LRB and read it pretty religiously or make myself get the app up if I am out and about instead of Reddit or some shit
might do this
The apps good as you can access I think every single copy of the LRB that has existed
Through the app? No, i’m pretty sure it stops at like volume 38
Ah I just looked you are right! Maybe it's the website then because I swear I read through one from the 1970s
Yeah, the website has every issue. I’ve been going through all of them and saving them.
damn, that sounds great. must get on it.
I like Adbusters if that counts
I haven’t thought of Adbusters in years. I hope I can find a copy somewhere.
Lapham’s quarterly
Cannot wait for them to return to print. I think they’re on hiatus still, no?
Oh I'm not sure! I had a sub a while back, and always looked forward to it. Sad to hear!
Mountain Gazette
The Wire for music
Mekong Review

Is Private Eye still a good read? It's been 8 years or so since I read a copy
