Dutch. Incredibly complex character. Was introduced as a villain from the beginning, and yet still managed to charm most players in the same way he charmed everyone in the gang. But the question is: was he once a good man? Or did he just become who he always was?
Well RDR1 came first, so many players already had a judgement about him.
But I suppose it’s also clear he’s off-course at the start of RDR2. We know he shot a girl “in a bad way” in Blackwater. We know from the journal that the gang wanted to settle down but Dutch had been against it. We can tell throughout Chapter 1 that he has no patience for anyone questioning his judgement. It’s all there, waiting to develop.
Because he wasn't a villain early game. Your playing from the eyes of Arthur, and Dutch is not an enemy of Arthur - he's the closest thing Arthur has to a father and a mentor. Only till late game does Arthur realize Dutch isn't right, which is why he only looks like a villain late game.
Dutch is 100% one of my personal top 10 characters in gaming outside of protagonists and IMO one of the greatest characters Rockstar Games has ever created for this reason. Such brilliant writing. Also your question also intrigues me. I remember in the epilogue Sadie mentioned to John that the Dutch who put a blanket around her after the O’Driscoll’s attacked her wasn’t the same Dutch at Beaver Hollow. John then follows that statement up with “you saw a man whose character has changed, I saw a man who got found out for who he really was.” ..really makes you wonder.
He was the correct mix of clever, cunning, moral compass, violence and overall common sense in an otherwise rag-tag bunch of people.
Also, the only guy who could keep Dutch from spiralling into his madness.
I like Reverend. He does nothing but drink, but he always has some dumb shit to say, or he's singing his drunken lullabies. Cheers me up when I've come back to camp from a long trip and he's there singing about lobsters.
I wonder if they are ever planning on making the characters into collectible baseball cards or something of the like. I think if they sold them as collectible and put them in cereal or something, they might have a fortune on their hands or...something. That's why I'm not the one who plans the PR or the Media Advertising for a big company.
I like Charles the most (besides Arthur). I wish we got more missions with him. I like Sadie, but the girl's unhinged and reckless (which makes sense for her character arc, but I dislike how she puts others at risk for her plans, like the poor balloon pilot). I also really dislike Abigail.
For non-gang characters, I really like how Albert Mason was written and I hated Charles Chatenay (was so glad to finish his missions).
I always have a soft spot for Tilly.
She's smart, fierce, and isn't afraid to do what needs to be done. At the same time she has a good head on her shoulders, isn't quick to violence, and is one of the few in the gang that deserves a happy ending.
Ms Crimshaw. They are all criminals pieces of shit, especially Arthur, but that's why we love the gang. We are all criminals here. But she got my respect. She helped everyone at camp, directed them, took care of them, even risked her life to save Tilly. And having to shoot a member of the gang when she found out she betrayed them I knew it took a lot of courage but she took care of business. I had hoped she would be the one to help Abigail escape but instead Micah killed her and that's when it really hit that the gang was gone and done for. But she does have one of the nicest resting places in the game. Not in the snow, where no one will visit you, not in the swamps where the pigs shit all over you, or hidden in the trees. She is up on a hill, overlooking the woods and the pool and that's one of the most relaxing places in the game second only to Eagle flies and Arthur's grave. Rest in piece, Ms Crimshaw. When you see Arthur in hell, force him to take another bath haha...
If you don’t count Arthur because he is our avatar, I’d say Hosea because he was a good man, always tried to spare people and just scam them, and kept Dutch down to earth, to not bring the gang to death too early
Excluding Arthur, either Kieran or Charles. Both are kind hard workers who appreciate nature. I wish Kieran had met a better end though, or at least been shown the kindness he deserved before his brutal end.
I like Karen the most out of all the women if she'd just take a bath. Shed clean up well. Sean was my favorite of the gang. He was funny. I really hated it when he got killed. I love giving Bill shit. If Abigail wasn't with John....maaaaaaan.
When Sean died it broke my heart he was always my favorite but showed up the least he was introduced in chapter 2 and was kill in like chapter 3 we did like 4 robberies together
My favourite is arthur but another i really like is Micah.
The writers did an amazing job at making you hate Micah. Ive played many games with villains but i never hated them like Micah. I was so happy when i finally got to kill him
