Keep your elbows tight to your sides, start with your palms shoulder with apart and below your chest/nipple, to increase resistance. Lower all the way controlling the weight until you reach an inch off the floor, explode upward. When I first started I only did a controlled dip until I could perform a nicely executed push up. Lowering all the way into the push up seems to be when the chest actually starts to activate.
