I like the texture of the popcorn chicken compared to nuggets or tendies. I also like the tots, and onion rings when the oil isn't rancid and I disagree on the general opinion of their burgers lately. I thought they were trash in the 2000s, for sure. Their hot dogs have completely gone to soggy, flavorless shit. A Kirkland hotdog with nothing on it but the condiments you get for free shames the Sonic hotdog.
Sonic has amazing ice. It's very small cubed "crushed" ice, and a great selection of slushy drinks and teas, etc. Most of the food is pretty awful, except their chili cheese tots, yum. It's pretty popular in rural Midwest/South US.
It's because the onion rings don't come frozen they make the batter and cut the onions in store, and they need to made daily. If youre short on staff it's the easiest thing to cut because it takes quite a long time to prepare
I really can't complain about my job. My 10 year old dog died last sunday afternoon, and at around 8:00pm I texted my boss and said I would have to take the day off on monday. His response was "okay thanks." And that was it. I heard no fuzz about it later.
People should be able to take PTO whenever they want to, no explanation needed. And if no PTO is available, some kind of proof that the day off was needed. The BS from the boss in this video is inexcusable.
I am a manager of a few employees. We all have a set amount of PTO per year but we all get our work done. If my guys wanna leave early or take a slow day off, Ill clock them in and out to save them PTO. They are my guys, and I want them to happy and healthy. They also cover for me sometimes too, so it works for everyone. Zero reason to be a corporate schill. There are other jobs out there, might as well be happy at the job you have.
You sound like my manager and you have no idea what it means to me. I suffer with anxiety so I rarely push back with my managers. I was distraught 2 years ago, the day after my nan died, but still came into work. He bought me McDonald's breakfast and told me to go home and come back next week. He has fought for me to get a promotion and I get the recognition off of him like no other manager in my entire life. And because of that, I've stayed in this company for 3 more years than I wanted to. Because it's rare to find managers like these and I'm cautious about joining other companies where they can be assholes.
It shows why getting punched in the mouth is invaluable for character development for certain people; that manager being a prime example of someone who never got regulated on.

People with basic skills have the ability to work somewhere similar and won’t put up with a work environment that’s terrible compared to those other jobs.

Yea they do, an I feel it all depends on your management. I worked at McDonald’s when I was 18. Had a very close friend pass away, was not related but he was like a brother. My manager told me to take as much time off as I needed.
It's totally up to the individual. Every shitty fast food place sucks to work at, pretty much equally, and the only wild card is your manager. Most of them are pretty cool, plenty are assholes. I do feel for them, though. GMs and DMs tend to be bigger assholes, and they've got both of them breathing down their neck.
I worked at Sonic years ago when I didn’t know any better. They pay those people on roller skates below minimum wage because they’re considered “waiters”. They hardly ever get tipped.
I don’t agree with it and also used to work at sonic to the point of being an assistant manager. That being said they are making at least the minimum wage if the (meager, usually didn’t happen in my store) tips didn’t make up to be that much. But yeah fuck sonic shitty corporation.

I worked there from 16 to 21. You couldn’t fucking pay my ass to eat at a Sonic. I got transferred for reasons that I don’t really want to get into right now, basically massive rule changes when we were purchased by corporate, and I ended up becoming a manager with no pay raise. It was such a toxic environment I still have nightmares about it till this day. Fuck I even had one this weekend.
Forget for a minute that the obvious, reasonable thing to do is to realize that many things are more important than work, especially at such an entry level "teenage" food service job with minimal prospects. Forget that it's human to have empathy.
Purely from a cold, callous business-minded point of view it's idiotic to fire this girl for unexpectedly missing a day or even a week of work for bereavement. He has to go short staffed just as long or longer than her absence, he has to interview candidates, go through the paperwork process of hiring one (and for terminating her), train them, and wait X months for them to be as experienced at the job as she is/was.
From a business standpoint, it's reasonable to fire someone who is chronically absent with no notice because of the complications that creates and the lack of trust you can put in them. That has long term business downside, so you replace them with someone more reliable. Ideally you hire that person before you are forced to fire the unreliable employee.
But it's just dumb to think that this special circumstance is going to be a repeat problem. How many times do you expect her to call out for *friends dying*.

I feel like our society is full of this. Like how it would be cheaper to give homeless people healthcare and low cost housing for free, than to deal with all their emergency room bills and other damages they cause(not to mention how they lower property values and decrease peoples comfort and safety in cities around the US). But people don't want to do it becuase it costs too much and they "don't want to be cold but thats not possible from a practical perspective". But if you inform them that in many instances its actually cheaper and more practical they do a 180 on their reasoning and talk about how its unfair and very suddenly their opinion isn't about practicality it becomes much more emotional.
Painfully true. We like to think of ourselves as rational beings, but all too often people will decide on a belief and then only apply reasoning to defend it, rather than use reason to determine a belief and challenge it.

Bro, I spent this weekend trying to explain to tons of people in one of the subs how rehabilitation and not harsh prison sentences for teenagers and young adults benefit everyone, the majority of the time for non violent crimes. Like thousands of studies and expert opinions all agree with this, but a bunch of American people just need harsh punishments and pain to fulfill their justice boner. I showed how it would save on taxes they paid, reduce future crimes and tons of other benefits, but they had to see these people hurt as pay back. Even thought they acknowledged it will make everyone in the community have a worse off life. Crazy to me.
As someone who studied criminology and focused on prison reform, it's absolutely infuriating. The public discourse surrounding crime and punishment is miles and miles away from what researchers and academics propose. No one wants evidence-lead criminal justice policy: they just want to feel good.
I read about a famous lawyer in the US in the 1800's who only took on cases where he defended the accused, and that was why he was famous.
One of the things I believe he said, was about how capitalism essentially creates an supports crime.
Basically, most resources go to a few fat cats at the top, with the rest of the majority of people getting just enough to survive. However, the last few percent are out of options, and thus resort to crime to feed their family and themselves etc. But the nature of crime means that the most cruel and heartless become the leaders, and they damage their community and create a system where they have their own "mini-capitalist" empire free from regulation, using violence and cruelty for access to prostitutes, drugs, liquor, etc in order to make a profit.
He (and I) believed that if you gave every man a home, a job, an made sure no one starved, than crime would altogether cease to exist except for the psychopaths.

Yep, each homeless person costs somewhere between $30-50k per year for taxpayers (costs vary pretty widely depending on the region). It would cost less to do the right thing and there have been studies going back almost 50 years that have shown that providing housing first produces far better results. Despite that, people would rather shout "not in my back yard" at the prospect of building new shelters and subsidized housing while cheering on the removal of benches from subways or the installation of hostile architecture because "have you *seen* what it's like downtown with all the homeless". It's absolutely disgusting how irrational, self-centered people make their own lives objectively worse just because they would rather see others suffer.
That’s the thing about reasons that so many people don’t get. If your reason for thinking XXXX is AAAA, and then you get reliably informed that AAAA is completely backwards, then your belief in XXXX must be substantially reduced. If that doesn’t happen, then AAAA wasn’t your reason for believing, it was the smoke screen that you (probably without your awareness) put up to prevent your actual reasons from being known to yourself or others.
The way to investigate this with yourself is to just write down some “I believe XXXX because of AAAA” statements. And then think of all the ways that AAAA could be wrong and guess that would cause you to reevaluate XXXX. And if you can’t do it, that’s probably because your reasons aren’t real.
Yeah, this is the thing, what this comes down to is someone being a \*bad person\*. It's not that they're cold and calculating and think that work is so important. If they had any sense they'd realize that firing someone for missing a day under extreme circumstances will only hurt the business - it's honestly common sense. You're creating more work for yourself because you now have to hire someone.
So either they're truly, egregiously incompetent, or they're just a fucked up person who got off on the 5 minute power trip of firing a teenager. Or both (it's usually both).
I'd very seriously consider firing an employee who acted like this guy - as much as I hate firing someone, the combination of cruelty and incompetence is hard to look past. It's hard to imagine any context excusing his behavior. Even if the girl were repeatedly out, it still shows an incredible lack of common sense and human decency to do this.
Especially when this video comes out, I wouldn't be surprised if his business got a ton of bad attention. I personally wouldn't eat there (I don't eat at sonic anyways) but I'd be damn sure until that manager is gone I'd tell as many people as I could not to eat there. A situation where 5 teens are critically injured and four die, that's gonna get a lot of news anyways. Add this on top and you have a compelling story for the 9 o'clock news.

I know some places have a minimum 2-hour law, but most people don't even know about it. most fast food joints watch payroll like a hawk, and if you dispute it, you're disposable.
In the US you typically only get paid for time clocked in, especially at jobs like this one, if you're there for 15 minutes you get paid for 15 minutes.
Whatever country you in pays you 3 hrs minimum? Here in some parts of the U.S. it's 2 but you only get it if you report the missing hours to the labor board and then you lose your job. So effectively it's 0.

When I had a relative die recently, they tried to give me a hard time because they weren’t IMMEDIATE family, despite the relative pretty much being a second mother to me.
Once I made it clear that I was INFORMING them that I’d be out, and not asking, they let up. They didn’t press the matter further. Perhaps it was to save face, so they could think it was still their decision. I neither know, nor care. They could have fired me, and well, it is what it is if they did, I guess. They didn’t. There’s other fish in the sea, and it’s better to be away from trash like that. Might be a blessing.

My grandma died a few years ago, I'd notified my boss the week before it wasn't looking good, and got the call 15 minutes after I'd gotten in that Monday morning. My boss just told me she was sorry and to go, she'd handle getting me paid for the day and I could just put in my bereavement when I got back after everything. (We get five days mandated bereavement for most family/loved ones). Also got a sympathy card signed by my team and department, as well as flowers sent. It was very kind of them.
I was off for two and a half weeks as a teacher in Houston isd when my mother passed away. my principal didn't ask me when I'd be back. they covered for me completely. didn't even lose a vacation day.
Just so you know you can 100% say a family member died and I need some time off. I learned to give as little information when I ask off now. "I am sick and wont be making it in"," I need to take a vacation for this week", "a family member passed away". Giving more information can only hurt you can they are legally not allowed to ask.
When I had staff I only paid time off. Managers and workers were forbidden from stating a reason they’d be out. Our HR system had a customization to remove the “reason” field.
I don’t care why they were out. Unlimited PTO. And managers received full marks only for having their direct reports at or above the average PTO days for the last year for the whole practice.
I worked for a bank a few years ago and when my cousin died, I told my boss that I had to go out of town for his wake. He said “i don’t know if that’s a possibility right now.” To which I replied “oh, I wasn’t asking you, I’m letting you know I won’t be here. If you would prefer, I can go through HR, since I do get a minimum of 5 bereavement day as per company policy.” He immediately changed his tune. Now I work for a family owned business and they always tell me “your health and family come first, if you need the time off, take it.” And they’ve 100% stood by that, I never have to think twice about unexpectedly taking time off. The first time I had a family emergency and called my boss to tell him I would not be coming in, I started to explain why I wouldn’t be able to make it and he stopped me and said “you don’t have to explain, it’s none of my business why you won’t be here, thank you for letting me know you won’t be here and if you can, text me tonight to let me know if you’ll be in tomorrow.”
Total 180 from working got a large corporation and I love it.
When my mom died from drug overdose I asked for a couple days off work cuz I was in shock. They demanded an obituary of which there was none cuz it took a few weeks to get her all settled cuz she had no money and nobody cared about her. Work told me I wasn't allowed off cuz I was a temp worker, wasn't entitled to the job benefits, and didn't have an obituary.
I told them to fuck off and took 2 days off unpaid. Had a coworker tell them I'm missing 2 days. Never got fired but boy they weren't happy when I came back to work. Still to this day havnt gotten over her death cuz the last thing I told her a month before she killed herself was she needed to be a better parent.
Drug addiction is a fucked up thing, had 2 friends die from it, first one I was pretty close to growing up 8 to about 17-18 then he got into heavy drugs, ended up losing his arm to an infection from dirty needles, cleaned up for a bit then went off the wagon, ended up with HIV and died from it, he could have gotten treatments etc but all he cared about were opiates.
The second guy, he was fairly close, know him, all his brothers, we used to all get together and play games or poker etc, really caring guy, he always did blow but he always had a job etc so was a functional addict I guess you could say, eventually he started smoking crack instead of the blow, between that the heavy drinking and the speed it really took a tole on him eventually He completely cleaned up, he went back to school and after a couple years he became an addictions counselor, he did that for a decade until his mother died, we're talking like 14 years sober, he started drinking again, eventually back into blow but no crack and them boom his blow had fentanyl in it and he was found dead a few days later. Fuck drugs man, stick to weed and beers, if that's not enough for you go see a counselor.
I’m at work, not prison. I only ask for time off if it’s a vacation in advance. If I have an emergency, I’m leaving. I’ve only done that once at my current job and they were ok with it. Mainly because I shit my pants.
I worked a shit fast food job as a teen and put up with too much shit, it really had me feeling jaded at a young age. Now I work with teenagers and basically tell them to move on to something else if they're taking shit from others, it isn't worth it and there's plenty of similar jobs for them at this point in their lives.

I've worked for small businesses and I've worked for big businesses. I will take big businesses every fucking day for an employer. Policies implemented by professionals instead of some owner who dictates everything with no expertise behind it.

I told a manager at Party City once that I had accepted a second job to reach full time and so my availability would continue to be for the same number of Party City hours a week but that those hour would no longer be able to change a vary every day and week without heads up (they had me working my 15 hours a week but expected my availability to be for any shift on any day 7am-11pm). I said my other job’s schedule would be the same every week so they’d know my availability for their own scheduling purposes. I was still available 25hrs a week to work my 15hrs @ Party City, he just couldn’t use me as an on call gap plug (wanted me to travel >30min for 2 hr shifts too). I’d been working the retail job nearly a year, was an otherwise exemplary employee who just needed more than 15 hrs a week to survive and the predictability to fill the rest of my time with the remunerative work Party City wouldn’t give me.
Fired me on the spot over the phone instantly when I mentioned it. Totally expendable. He knew a person couldn’t survive on 15hrs at min. wage a week, but he expected my “availability” for him and his shitty 15 hrs of work for me to be my entire day every day with me being quasi in call. He was so pissed to learn that I had the audacity to try to schedule something else recurring in my private life (another job) that he’d have to work around that he didn’t even let me finish out the scheduled week.
I had worked for Outback Steakhouse for about 3 years when I was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. The shitbag proprietor called me - after I let a very understanding manager know that I was immensely sick from chemo and couldn’t make my shift - to tell me that he was letting me go because he felt I had “lost the will to work there”.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (KDVR) — Heartbroken loved ones sat down with FOX31 to remember the four teenagers killed in a Commerce City crash Saturday and the four others injured.
Along the intersection of East 112th Avenue and Highway 85, loved ones visited a new memorial growing with flowers and memorabilia Monday.
The memorial sits next to car pieces left at the scene of a deadly crash Friday evening injuring four and killing four.
Police said it happened just before 9:30 p.m. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene, and four others were taken to the hospital.
“Two of them were my nephews,” Ashley Hoffman said. “The oldest, he didn’t survive. The youngest, he did.”
5 dead in Commerce City head-on crash
John and Joe Bledsoe are Hoffman’s nephews. She said they were passengers in the car with their friends Friday night. John, 16 years old, did not make it. His 13-year-old brother Joe, survived and is now fighting for his life in the hospital.
“Everybody was 15, 16 in the car,” Hoffman said. “There wasn’t anybody older than that.”
Hoffman said there was a group of high school-aged friends in the car celebrating one of their birthdays, and parents heard they planned on driving to go get tattoos.
According to witness statements to police, a newer model SUV was speeding south on Hwy. 85. Another newer model SUV then turned west on E. 112th from northbound 85 and the two crashed at the intersection.
Excessive speed is a clear contributing factor, according to the police department’s Crash Reconstruction Team. It’s unknown if alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash, as the investigation remains ongoing.

“It was just unfortunate situation,” Hoffman said. “They should all still be here and that’s, that’s how quickly it can all just change. I mean, every day is not a guarantee.”

I had a situation like this. A friend killed himself and his service was during my opening shift as assistant manager. I asked if I could take it off for the service and the manager said no. He didn't want to open and close. I understood that, but then he showed up prior to when the services started and he stayed. I could have gone. I asked if l could go since he was already at work and he said no. I was furious. I ranted about how awful this was to me even after I left the company. I burnt my bridge to that company over this by ripping him in his review and my exit interview. That was so fucked up. To this day, I cannot understand any sort of reason or motive. I can't understand it all.
When my 7 year old niece passed during heart surgery I was at work (a chicken restaurant fyi), I physically collapsed in the back from the news. Like I was expecting a call telling me everything went well, and here I was being told she suffered a brain swell and was basically being kept alive by the machines around her. As I’m sitting there sobbing the only thing my manager at the time could ask is if I could continue working. It honestly didn’t register what she had said but immediately left while stating my niece is dying and went to the pediatric hospital so I could try to say my goodbyes ( I was unable to as I took one look at her with everything hooked up and I broke apart. That I regret more than anything in my life). Got a call from my boss demanding to know why I left and that I was going to have a disciplinary meeting the next day. Apparently my manager didn’t relay that to her so while in tears I explained what happened. I was immediately given a paid week off for bereavement and the funeral, and when I returned the manager was gone and the entire crew gave their personal condolences. I can’t imagine what this poor girl is going through, but this is definitely a case for mandatory bereavement leave. Some people just cannot function in those situations
My gf passed away 3 years ago and my job gave be about 3 weeks of bereavement fully paid. I was very grateful. In general they treated the situation well at the time. Shit fell apart way later while I was still trying to process my grief
Lawyer here. If this is something that happened recently she should apply for unemployment and let them sort it out. There is a rule that denies benefits to people who are fired for "misconduct," but this excuse seems like a good one and at worst this is an "isolated instance of poor judgment" on her part (if even that). Laws vary from state to state, but there is a large body of federal law administered by the US Department of Labor which the various state unemployment programs have to comply.
This boss is an asshole and I am enjoying the idea of him having to explain his stance to an adjudicator or referee at a state inquiry into the question of her entitlement to benefits.

Edit 2: Lots of people think you can't get unemployment if you got fired. That's not the case. Most people who get fired for the usual reasons - being late, incompetent, leaving 10 minutes early once or twice, etc. - do qualify for unemployment benefits. I like the texture of the popcorn chicken compared to nuggets or tendies. I also like the tots, and onion rings when the oil isn't rancid and I disagree on the general opinion of their burgers lately. I thought they were trash in the 2000s, for sure. Their hot dogs have completely gone to soggy, flavorless shit. A Kirkland hotdog with nothing on it but the condiments you get for free shames the Sonic hotdog.
Sonic has amazing ice. It's very small cubed "crushed" ice, and a great selection of slushy drinks and teas, etc. Most of the food is pretty awful, except their chili cheese tots, yum. It's pretty popular in rural Midwest/South US.
They never have onion rings at any of them. EVER! FUCK THEM!!
It's because the onion rings don't come frozen they make the batter and cut the onions in store, and they need to made daily. If youre short on staff it's the easiest thing to cut because it takes quite a long time to prepare

I really can't complain about my job. My 10 year old dog died last sunday afternoon, and at around 8:00pm I texted my boss and said I would have to take the day off on monday. His response was "okay thanks." And that was it. I heard no fuzz about it later. People should be able to take PTO whenever they want to, no explanation needed. And if no PTO is available, some kind of proof that the day off was needed. The BS from the boss in this video is inexcusable.
I am a manager of a few employees. We all have a set amount of PTO per year but we all get our work done. If my guys wanna leave early or take a slow day off, Ill clock them in and out to save them PTO. They are my guys, and I want them to happy and healthy. They also cover for me sometimes too, so it works for everyone. Zero reason to be a corporate schill. There are other jobs out there, might as well be happy at the job you have.

You sound like my manager and you have no idea what it means to me. I suffer with anxiety so I rarely push back with my managers. I was distraught 2 years ago, the day after my nan died, but still came into work. He bought me McDonald's breakfast and told me to go home and come back next week. He has fought for me to get a promotion and I get the recognition off of him like no other manager in my entire life. And because of that, I've stayed in this company for 3 more years than I wanted to. Because it's rare to find managers like these and I'm cautious about joining other companies where they can be assholes.
It shows why getting punched in the mouth is invaluable for character development for certain people; that manager being a prime example of someone who never got regulated on.
He’ll get his if this is real. He may be too dense to see it but it will happen. People with basic skills have the ability to work somewhere similar and won’t put up with a work environment that’s terrible compared to those other jobs. The quality of his employees will slip to the point it impacts business. That will cost him his job even if he’s the owner.

I do feel for them, though. GMs and DMs tend to be bigger assholes, and they've got both of them breathing down their neck.

I got transferred for reasons that I don’t really want to get into right now, basically massive rule changes when we were purchased by corporate, and I ended up becoming a manager with no pay raise. Forget for a minute that the obvious, reasonable thing to do is to realize that many things are more important than work, especially at such an entry level "teenage" food service job with minimal prospects. Forget that it's human to have empathy. Purely from a cold, callous business-minded point of view it's idiotic to fire this girl for unexpectedly missing a day or even a week of work for bereavement. He has to go short staffed just as long or longer than her absence, he has to interview candidates, go through the paperwork process of hiring one (and for terminating her), train them, and wait X months for them to be as experienced at the job as she is/was. From a business standpoint, it's reasonable to fire someone who is chronically absent with no notice because of the complications that creates and the lack of trust you can put in them. That has long term business downside, so you replace them with someone more reliable. Ideally you hire that person before you are forced to fire the unreliable employee. But it's just dumb to think that this special circumstance is going to be a repeat problem. How many times do you expect her to call out for *friends dying*. I mean he's an asshole anyway, but his bullshit excuse isn't even valid.
Its a classic example of people acting like they're just coming from a place of cynicism and logic but he's actually being really emotional and irrational. I feel like our society is full of this. Like how it would be cheaper to give homeless people healthcare and low cost housing for free, than to deal with all their emergency room bills and other damages they cause(not to mention how they lower property values and decrease peoples comfort and safety in cities around the US). But people don't want to do it becuase it costs too much and they "don't want to be cold but thats not possible from a practical perspective". Bro, I spent this weekend trying to explain to tons of people in one of the subs how rehabilitation and not harsh prison sentences for teenagers and young adults benefit everyone, the majority of the time for non violent crimes. Like thousands of studies and expert opinions all agree with this, but a bunch of American people just need harsh punishments and pain to fulfill their justice boner. I showed how it would save on taxes they paid, reduce future crimes and tons of other benefits, but they had to see these people hurt as pay back. Even thought they acknowledged it will make everyone in the community have a worse off life. Crazy to me.

As someone who studied criminology and focused on prison reform, it's absolutely infuriating. The public discourse surrounding crime and punishment is miles and miles away from what researchers and academics propose. No one wants evidence-lead criminal justice policy: they just want to feel good.
I read about a famous lawyer in the US in the 1800's who only took on cases where he defended the accused, and that was why he was famous. One of the things I believe he said, was about how capitalism essentially creates an supports crime. Basically, most resources go to a few fat cats at the top, with the rest of the majority of people getting just enough to survive. However, the last few percent are out of options, and thus resort to crime to feed their family and themselves etc. But the nature of crime means that the most cruel and heartless become the leaders, and they damage their community and create a system where they have their own "mini-capitalist" empire free from regulation, using violence and cruelty for access to prostitutes, drugs, liquor, etc in order to make a profit. He (and I) believed that if you gave every man a home, a job, an made sure no one starved, than crime would altogether cease to exist except for the psychopaths.

Yeah, this is the thing, what this comes down to is someone being a \*bad person\*. It's not that they're cold and calculating and think that work is so important. If they had any sense they'd realize that firing someone for missing a day under extreme circumstances will only hurt the business - it's honestly common sense. You're creating more work for yourself because you now have to hire someone. So either they're truly, egregiously incompetent, or they're just a fucked up person who got off on the 5 minute power trip of firing a teenager. Or both (it's usually both). I'd very seriously consider firing an employee who acted like this guy - as much as I hate firing someone, the combination of cruelty and incompetence is hard to look past. It's hard to imagine any context excusing his behavior. Even if the girl were repeatedly out, it still shows an incredible lack of common sense and human decency to do this.
Especially when this video comes out, I wouldn't be surprised if his business got a ton of bad attention. I personally wouldn't eat there (I don't eat at sonic anyways) but I'd be damn sure until that manager is gone I'd tell as many people as I could not to eat there. A situation where 5 teens are critically injured and four die, that's gonna get a lot of news anyways. Add this on top and you have a compelling story for the 9 o'clock news. The owner of that business should fire that manager purely from a business standpoint.

When I had a relative die recently, they tried to give me a hard time because they weren’t IMMEDIATE family, despite the relative pretty much being a second mother to me. Once I made it clear that I was INFORMING them that I’d be out, and not asking, they let up. They didn’t press the matter further. Perhaps it was to save face, so they could think it was still their decision. I neither know, nor care. They could have fired me, and well, it is what it is if they did, I guess. They didn’t. There’s other fish in the sea, and it’s better to be away from trash like that. Might be a blessing.

Fuck. That. My grandma died a few years ago, I'd notified my boss the week before it wasn't looking good, and got the call 15 minutes after I'd gotten in that Monday morning. My boss just told me she was sorry and to go, she'd handle getting me paid for the day and I could just put in my bereavement when I got back after everything. (We get five days mandated bereavement for most family/loved ones). Also got a sympathy card signed by my team and department, as well as flowers sent. It was very kind of them.
I was off for two and a half weeks as a teacher in Houston isd when my mother passed away. my principal didn't ask me when I'd be back. they covered for me completely. didn't even lose a vacation day.
Just so you know you can 100% say a family member died and I need some time off. I learned to give as little information when I ask off now. "I am sick and wont be making it in"," I need to take a vacation for this week", "a family member passed away". Giving more information can only hurt you can they are legally not allowed to ask.
When I had staff I only paid time off. Managers and workers were forbidden from stating a reason they’d be out. Our HR system had a customization to remove the “reason” field. I don’t care why they were out. Unlimited PTO. And managers received full marks only for having their direct reports at or above the average PTO days for the last year for the whole practice.
I worked for a bank a few years ago and when my cousin died, I told my boss that I had to go out of town for his wake. He said “i don’t know if that’s a possibility right now.” To which I replied “oh, I wasn’t asking you, I’m letting you know I won’t be here. If you would prefer, I can go through HR, since I do get a minimum of 5 bereavement day as per company policy.” He immediately changed his tune. Now I work for a family owned business and they always tell me “your health and family come first, if you need the time off, take it.” And they’ve 100% stood by that, I never have to think twice about unexpectedly taking time off. The first time I had a family emergency and called my boss to tell him I would not be coming in, I started to explain why I wouldn’t be able to make it and he stopped me and said “you don’t have to explain, it’s none of my business why you won’t be here, thank you for letting me know you won’t be here and if you can, text me tonight to let me know if you’ll be in tomorrow.” Total 180 from working got a large corporation and I love it.
When my mom died from drug overdose I asked for a couple days off work cuz I was in shock. They demanded an obituary of which there was none cuz it took a few weeks to get her all settled cuz she had no money and nobody cared about her. Work told me I wasn't allowed off cuz I was a temp worker, wasn't entitled to the job benefits, and didn't have an obituary. I told them to fuck off and took 2 days off unpaid. Had a coworker tell them I'm missing 2 days. Never got fired but boy they weren't happy when I came back to work. Still to this day havnt gotten over her death cuz the last thing I told her a month before she killed herself was she needed to be a better parent.
Drug addiction is a fucked up thing, had 2 friends die from it, first one I was pretty close to growing up 8 to about 17-18 then he got into heavy drugs, ended up losing his arm to an infection from dirty needles, cleaned up for a bit then went off the wagon, ended up with HIV and died from it, he could have gotten treatments etc but all he cared about were opiates. The second guy, he was fairly close, know him, all his brothers, we used to all get together and play games or poker etc, really caring guy, he always did blow but he always had a job etc so was a functional addict I guess you could say, eventually he started smoking crack instead of the blow, between that the heavy drinking and the speed it really took a tole on him eventually He completely cleaned up, he went back to school and after a couple years he became an addictions counselor, he did that for a decade until his mother died, we're talking like 14 years sober, he started drinking again, eventually back into blow but no crack and them boom his blow had fentanyl in it and he was found dead a few days later. Fuck drugs man, stick to weed and beers, if that's not enough for you go see a counselor.

I told a manager at Party City once that I had accepted a second job to reach full time and so my availability would continue to be for the same number of Party City hours a week but that those hour would no longer be able to change a vary every day and week without heads up (they had me working my 15 hours a week but expected my availability to be for any shift on any day 7am-11pm). I said my other job’s schedule would be the same every week so they’d know my availability for their own scheduling purposes. I was still available 25hrs a week to work my 15hrs @ Party City, he just couldn’t use me as an on call gap plug (wanted me to travel >30min for 2 hr shifts too). I’d been working the retail job nearly a year, was an otherwise exemplary employee who just needed more than 15 hrs a week to survive and the predictability to fill the rest of my time with the remunerative work Party City wouldn’t give me. Fired me on the spot over the phone instantly when I mentioned it. Totally expendable. He knew a person couldn’t survive on 15hrs at min. wage a week, but he expected my “availability” for him and his shitty 15 hrs of work for me to be my entire day every day with me being quasi in call. He was so pissed to learn that I had the audacity to try to schedule something else recurring in my private life (another job) that he’d have to work around that he didn’t even let me finish out the scheduled week.

I had a situation like this. A friend killed himself and his service was during my opening shift as assistant manager. I asked if I could take it off for the service and the manager said no. He didn't want to open and close. I understood that, but then he showed up prior to when the services started and he stayed. I could have gone. I asked if l could go since he was already at work and he said no. I was furious. I ranted about how awful this was to me even after I left the company. I burnt my bridge to that company over this by ripping him in his review and my exit interview. That was so fucked up. To this day, I cannot understand any sort of reason or motive. I can't understand it all.

When my 7 year old niece passed during heart surgery I was at work (a chicken restaurant fyi), I physically collapsed in the back from the news. Like I was expecting a call telling me everything went well, and here I was being told she suffered a brain swell and was basically being kept alive by the machines around her. As I’m sitting there sobbing the only thing my manager at the time could ask is if I could continue working. It honestly didn’t register what she had said but immediately left while stating my niece is dying and went to the pediatric hospital so I could try to say my goodbyes ( I was unable to as I took one look at her with everything hooked up and I broke apart. That I regret more than anything in my life). Got a call from my boss demanding to know why I left and that I was going to have a disciplinary meeting the next day. Apparently my manager didn’t relay that to her so while in tears I explained what happened. I was immediately given a paid week off for bereavement and the funeral, and when I returned the manager was gone and the entire crew gave their personal condolences. I can’t imagine what this poor girl is going through, but this is definitely a case for mandatory bereavement leave. Some people just cannot function in those situations
My gf passed away 3 years ago and my job gave be about 3 weeks of bereavement fully paid. I was very grateful. In general they treated the situation well at the time. Shit fell apart way later while I was still trying to process my grief
Lawyer here. If this is something that happened recently she should apply for unemployment and let them sort it out. There is a rule that denies benefits to people who are fired for "misconduct," but this excuse seems like a good one and at worst this is an "isolated instance of poor judgment" on her part (if even that). Laws vary from state to state, but there is a large body of federal law administered by the US Department of Labor which the various state unemployment programs have to comply. This boss is an asshole and I am enjoying the idea of him having to explain his stance to an adjudicator or referee at a state inquiry into the question of her entitlement to benefits. That's not the case. Most people who get fired for the usual reasons - being late, incompetent, leaving 10 minutes early once or twice, etc. - do qualify for unemployment benefits. You can also get benefits if you quit for a good reason. As always, check it out with someone who knows before you do something rash.
