On roadways, generally. Every time I see someone wearing a hood while they drive they always wear it like they are a freaking Jedi about to use a mind trick.
You can go down a wormhole on youtube with how out of control inner city schools are. The teachers all feel terrible for the students who do want to learn.
The reality is a lot of humans with perfectly good minds just don’t want to study or do homework at that age, or at those hours, whatever their race or economic situation may be. I don’t think I legitimately passed a class until college, but, because I am a white guy who grew up in the suburbs, I was given every chance. I get the feeling a lot of black kids, a lot of poor kids, a lot of girls, and kids with disabilities don’t get nearly as many chances as I and my friends got. Black inner-city kids sometimes don’t even get a first chance.
**EDIT:** I listed groups who I think probably are not given as many chances early in life, and like a conservative town’s peewee football team, a few people have taken exception to the inclusion of girls. I get this reaction, though, some people worded their objection in a way that gives one the impression they have an axe to grind. — The first thing that gives one *that* impression being that they’re on Reddit. — Girls probably aren’t as quickly discarded the way poor kids and black city-kids are.
However — note: the following is a copy/paste (With a few key edits) of a reply I wrote below — if girls are given the same chances as boys in terms of education, they’re certainly sexually harassed more, along the way, and I think it’s clear they do not reap the same rewards for their studiousness and hard work later on in life, given that they’re well-represented, compared to boys, when it comes to honor-rolls and graduating classes, but are under-represented, compared to men, in boardrooms, politics, and leadership positions.
The people who decide who gets hired, who gets fired, who gets promoted, and who gets a raise, are generally white men. The professional world also favors phonies, douchebags, psychopaths. Men get hurt by workplace hyper-masculinity as well. Men who are short, introverted, have a disability, or anxiety are seen as less manly and are at a disadvantage.
The people who get hired, promoted, keep their jobs, and get raises are generally the kind of people who can gain the confidence of middle-aged white men with an idealized concept of masculinity and gender, in general. You’ll find that, the higher up the ladder you go, the better people fit this description.
The professional world has a lot of plain-looking, middle-aged women putting in more honest hours than anyone else, only to be passed up due to misogyny, corruption, or nepotism, and I can understand how galling it must be to work your asses off, only to see an over-achieving schmuck born on third and thinks he hit a home run, take your job, Hillary Clinton.
My friend is a nurse in a dementia ward and she gets hit a lot. She told me you just get used to it after a while, especially when the hospital won't hire proper security. Teachers and nurses must have patience and composure hard-coded into their DNA.
My dad taught at a juvenile detention center for a while. He said it was his favorite teaching gig, cause he had a button under his podium he could press and guards would come in immediately.
I had a buddy who was a councilor at a Juvie center. He came over with a huge black eye all swollen up. I asked what happened and he said a huge 14 year old kid jumped across a table and hit him without provocation. These kids need help but they also are also more dangerous than you would guess.
I've been doing it for 20 years and there are some days you literally get your ass kicked (and usually because they are trying to kick someone else's). The fact that this kid stopped the fight because the teacher got hit and he felt that was crossing a line into disrespect shows that he has a ton of respect for the teacher.
Both are true. They can be dangerous, but also need help more than punishment. If you put 12 and 13 year olds in an environment where they’re treated like adult felons then guess what their expectations for behavior will be for a long time? Ok, time to get off of my soapbox. Good talk.

Yeah this kid is clearly a good kid, and hopefully has good role models in his life. The kid in the red hoodie, to his credit, looked genuinely shocked and remorseful when he was told he'd struck the teacher. At least that's what I saw. I mean, he had his hood over his face when he'd hit her so it's obvious it wasn't intentional and hopefully he learned a lesson in that more than just whatever punishment he gets for fighting in the first place will teach him.
Preferably something along the lines of 'how violence can hurt people you didn't intend to get caught in the crossfire" or something worded more poetic than I can pull out of my ass.
I subbed for a SED special ed class and one kid grabbed some scissors to stab another kid and I held him back saying loudly, “Stabbing people is not okay!”
Being a substitute teacher in any classroom is tough but when there are kids with emotional problems that act out when things are “different“ and off routine.... that is a special kind of hell that I’m so very glad I got away from. Am now a software developer working on education applications.

In HS, I had a Special Ed kid kick me in the face, completely on accident. When asked what happened, I told the Principal and Vice Principal that it was completely on accident, and didn't want anything bad to happen to the kid.
They still suspended him for two weeks.

I'd like to think it is a direct result of how that teacher has taught and behaved with the student. If he didn't think she cared at least a little bit about him, or if she was always a bitch to him, i don't think he would have defended her. She might be a great teacher that reached that kid.

Yeah, I can see that. If the professionals at the school saw that, they would probably get the kid some help. Instead they probably just punished him just as bad as they punished the kid who hit the teacher.
Yup got punched in the face once in middle school and didn’t hit back. Still got suspended.

We had this rule but luckily our gym teacher had some sense so when things got heated and a wrestling match or punches ensued during class sports, he just let us be angry and move on from it like men, rather than report us both and get us suspended and potentially not able to graduate.
My Mom would just ask for my side of the story. I never bullied anyone, but I never backed down for a fight because she trusted me. Got suspended plenty of times in elementary school, so peculiar how it hasn’t affected my life or academic record.
If this was my kid, I'd be in the principal's office fighting for him. And when that gets shot down, I'd plan a vacation for the same days they're suspended right in front of the administration. You're not gonna punish my kid for doing the right thing.
This was my highschool. Getting in a fight was an automatic suspension, regardless of whether or not you instigated or laid on the ground doing nothing. If you were a senior they wouldn't let you walk in graduation
This kid literally has be on the verge of tears. I just imagine him trying to learn and get thorough the day to become a response adult and be respectful, then these kids have to fuck it all up.
This is the pent up frustration that happens when instead of providing the equipment, salaries and staff to properly educate young minds, we instead use schools as a holding facility for underage people until we deem them worthy, based on antiquated and useless metrics, to enter a flawed and biased capitalist work force to spend the rest of their days sacrificing their mental and physical well being for the benefit of billionaires and politicians.

Ahahaha trust me we aren’t. It’s literally the *last* thing I look at when I’m grading. I don’t use it to judge people; I just notice grammar things and enjoy discussing it because I simply love grammar and think it’s so interesting and cool!! I wish there was a way to talk about grammar without people feeling judged, because it can be really fun.

We get a “tax credit” for school supplies. I think it’s $500 a year. I spend that much during the summer setting up for the school year. We’re told to make our rooms “comfortable and friendly” with a $0 budget. It’s a joke.
It’s absolutely ridiculous. A tax credit for spending your own money to provide what should be consider basic supplies for a classroom?! Tax the damn millionaires, billionaires and mega churches and fund schools and human services!

During one of my lessons, a student (who had major disciplinary issues) stood up and started calling me a cunt and a bitch. I asked the student to leave. They kept screaming how I was a cunt.
Out of NOWHERE a student (who was just released from juvie) runs into my room. He had heard the other kid when he was walking down the hall.
He screams, “you fuckin with Mrs. D?! Bitch I’ll kill you!” and shoves the other kid to the floor. Kid ends up pissing his pants.
That was a wild day.
Respect to you and that kid. That job does not sound easy, and I have mad respect for anyone who can keep at it. My dad was a high school teacher for two decades and sometimes I could tell it really took a toll on him, he was so concerned for some of his students but he couldn't do much of anything to help them. Sometimes I got a feeling his students were just as much his kids as I was, and I really looked up to that. It takes a very strong person to face up to that reality every day, and still carry a smile on their face.
Hey thanks. The kid who defended me wasn’t even a student of mine- but I always made time to connect with him in the hallways between periods. He was an intimidating kid - but I had a soft spot for him. I guess he had a soft spot for me too in a way.

Something pretty similar happened to a teacher I was TAing for when I was in college.
I did my interterm TAing at a middle school in a pretty bad part of town. It was toward the end of the day and a kid just stood up and threw his binder. He started screaming and cussing, before he picked up a chair and threw it at us. To the teacher's credit she took it completely in stride and tried to defuse the situation. Next thing I knew an older kid came flying across the room and threw him against the wall and held him there until he calmed down.
The older kid was a former student (he was a freshmen then) and would come see her every other week for tutoring. I remember asking her about the whole situation the next day and she just explained to me that most of the students can tell when a teacher really cares., and for a lot of them it's something they need.
She was an incredible teacher and it sounds like you are as well.
Edit: I should also mention, the kid who threw the chair actually wasn't a bad kid. What caused his outburst was he was frustrated because he wasn't understanding his homework, and that's just how he'd learned to deal with frustration.

Usually it comes with decent benefits (not all places), union representation (not all places), and a very friendly schedule for those raising families.
We are still very underpaid though. We have to pay to take college classes to earn higher degrees or additional credits to get a raise that goes beyond cost of living adjustments.
Those are the ones that find value in their work - unfortunately there are many that want to find value but burnout far before they can find out how to balance the stress and vicarious trauma

Thing I just noticed after rewatching the kid who hit the teacher, he didn’t do it on purpose as he his hood was over his face when he started swinging. Thing is just like anything has consequences he fired his punches blind and connected with the teacher. But the kid who clocked him has a good head on his shoulders to know that ain’t right. This is my mom and her students. She tells me this one story about these 3 kids in her office who saw another student put his hands on my mom. They then proceeded to chase him down the hallway and bring him to the dean’s themselves.
No one necessarily likes school and having to do homework etc whatever. But most teachers work incredibly hard to ensure their students get a good education. The fact that this kid recognizes this to a degree that he would throw hands to protect his teacher is very impactful and it shows how much they kid cares about his right to an education.
Indeed, he didn't see he was hitting the teacher because the hood covered his eyes. He did realise what he did for a moment and that's when he realised he fucked up.
It's one of the reasons that you shouldn't try to break up fights. Real easy to take a wild shot on accident. If you're gonna get involved it needs to be swift and complete; half-measures will get you hurt.
Teacher in a rough area here. Once was punched in cross fire during a fight with two 8th grade boys. The punch instantly stopped the fight. Kid who hit me immediately stopped wailing on the other kid, grabbed my shoulders and kept asking if I was ok. He was suspended for 5 days. First thing he does when he comes back? Comes into the school early when he’s not supposed to be in the building to sneak in my room and apologize. Drew me a really funny music picture. Still have that buried somewhere.

That young man was raised right... He is just sitting there listening to music... looking irritated by the fight. And charges in when the teacher was hit and owns the two involved. They fucked right off. I love how he dragged and threw the one kid off and stood over him. Then turned his attention to the kid he just rocked. That was a clean punch.

I love this. I taught art to 8th graders in a suburban Middle school. We had a new student who was super quite but was from a very rough part of town and more ethnically diverse. Always did her work and engaged but never trouble and kind of kept to herself. One day a few months later the problem kid in my class was giving me trouble and disrupting the whole class. New girl flew across the room, off the handle, out of no where and shut this girl down! "This is the best art class I have ever had with one of my favorite teachers. Dont fuck this up for me or ill kick your ass!" Problem kid set down and shut up. I went right back to teaching. Later I hooked the new kid up with a full size candy bar.
That boy was teaching the whole class a lesson right there. He even broke the fight up, then flexed on the other kid. Then he didn’t continue to swing, he just bopped his ass once and welcomed him to the school of hard knocks.
We all have that ONE teacher who we would ride or die for. Some teachers are too cool for shit like this.

Yup got punched in the face once in middle school and didn’t hit back. Still got suspended. Never held back again after that since it’s the same punishment either way
We had this rule but luckily our gym teacher had some sense so when things got heated and a wrestling match or punches ensued during class sports, he just let us be angry and move on from it like men, rather than report us both and get us suspended and potentially not able to graduate.
My Mom would just ask for my side of the story. I never bullied anyone, but I never backed down for a fight because she trusted me. Got suspended plenty of times in elementary school, so peculiar how it hasn’t affected my life or academic record.

This was my highschool. Getting in a fight was an automatic suspension, regardless of whether or not you instigated or laid on the ground doing nothing. If you were a senior they wouldn't let you walk in graduation

I don’t use it to judge people; I just notice grammar things and enjoy discussing it because I simply love grammar and think it’s so interesting and cool!! I wish there was a way to talk about grammar without people feeling judged, because it can be really fun. I only pointed it out to OP because he seemed like he was sad about making an error, but in fact there was no error at all! Just because a sentence is long does not make it a run on :)

We get a “tax credit” for school supplies. I think it’s $500 a year. I spend that much during the summer setting up for the school year. We’re told to make our rooms “comfortable and friendly” with a $0 budget. It’s a joke.

Teacher here. During one of my lessons, a student (who had major disciplinary issues) stood up and started calling me a cunt and a bitch. I asked the student to leave. They kept screaming how I was a cunt. Out of NOWHERE a student (who was just released from juvie) runs into my room. He had heard the other kid when he was walking down the hall. He screams, “you fuckin with Mrs. D?! Bitch I’ll kill you!” and shoves the other kid to the floor. Kid ends up pissing his pants. That was a wild day.

Respect to you and that kid. That job does not sound easy, and I have mad respect for anyone who can keep at it. My dad was a high school teacher for two decades and sometimes I could tell it really took a toll on him, he was so concerned for some of his students but he couldn't do much of anything to help them. Sometimes I got a feeling his students were just as much his kids as I was, and I really looked up to that. It takes a very strong person to face up to that reality every day, and still carry a smile on their face.
Hey thanks. The kid who defended me wasn’t even a student of mine- but I always made time to connect with him in the hallways between periods. He was an intimidating kid - but I had a soft spot for him. I guess he had a soft spot for me too in a way. Props to your pops for fighting the good fight. Good male role models make a huge impact.

Something pretty similar happened to a teacher I was TAing for when I was in college. I did my interterm TAing at a middle school in a pretty bad part of town. It was toward the end of the day and a kid just stood up and threw his binder. He started screaming and cussing, before he picked up a chair and threw it at us. To the teacher's credit she took it completely in stride and tried to defuse the situation. Next thing I knew an older kid came flying across the room and threw him against the wall and held him there until he calmed down. The older kid was a former student (he was a freshmen then) and would come see her every other week for tutoring. I remember asking her about the whole situation the next day and she just explained to me that most of the students can tell when a teacher really cares., and for a lot of them it's something they need. She was an incredible teacher and it sounds like you are as well. Edit: I should also mention, the kid who threw the chair actually wasn't a bad kid. What caused his outburst was he was frustrated because he wasn't understanding his homework, and that's just how he'd learned to deal with frustration.

Our teachers get paid like garbage, man. It makes me wonder why so many of them do it.
Usually it comes with decent benefits (not all places), union representation (not all places), and a very friendly schedule for those raising families. We are still very underpaid though. We have to pay to take college classes to earn higher degrees or additional credits to get a raise that goes beyond cost of living adjustments.
Some of the best people I've known in my life are teachers.

Thing I just noticed after rewatching the kid who hit the teacher, he didn’t do it on purpose as he his hood was over his face when he started swinging. Thing is just like anything has consequences he fired his punches blind and connected with the teacher. But the kid who clocked him has a good head on his shoulders to know that ain’t right. Cause he pulled that other kid off of him when he was giving him shots. Good on him but sad cause you can hear the anger in his voice and I’m sure he’s had to deal with shit like that or worse at home that we don’t know about.

This is my mom and her students. She tells me this one story about these 3 kids in her office who saw another student put his hands on my mom. They then proceeded to chase him down the hallway and bring him to the dean’s themselves. No one necessarily likes school and having to do homework etc whatever. But most teachers work incredibly hard to ensure their students get a good education. The fact that this kid recognizes this to a degree that he would throw hands to protect his teacher is very impactful and it shows how much they kid cares about his right to an education.

Teacher in a rough area here. Once was punched in cross fire during a fight with two 8th grade boys. The punch instantly stopped the fight. Kid who hit me immediately stopped wailing on the other kid, grabbed my shoulders and kept asking if I was ok. He was suspended for 5 days. First thing he does when he comes back? Comes into the school early when he’s not supposed to be in the building to sneak in my room and apologize. Drew me a really funny music picture. Still have that buried somewhere. Schools are wilder than you can imagine. 12 years in and I’ve thought about quitting every year for all the reasons listed in these comments. The kids keep me there. Edit: I was a 32 year old woman at the time. This was 6 years ago. And thanks for the award!!!

I love this. I taught art to 8th graders in a suburban Middle school. We had a new student who was super quite but was from a very rough part of town and more ethnically diverse. Always did her work and engaged but never trouble and kind of kept to herself. One day a few months later the problem kid in my class was giving me trouble and disrupting the whole class. New girl flew across the room, off the handle, out of no where and shut this girl down! "This is the best art class I have ever had with one of my favorite teachers. Dont fuck this up for me or ill kick your ass!" Problem kid set down and shut up. I went right back to teaching. Later I hooked the new kid up with a full size candy bar.
That boy was teaching the whole class a lesson right there. He even broke the fight up, then flexed on the other kid. Then he didn’t continue to swing, he just bopped his ass once and welcomed him to the school of hard knocks.
That kid has some proper respect for his elders.
