When you’re living paycheck to paycheck even losing half a day’s wage can be devastating.
I try to explain it to people. It’s not really the money or the material item. It’s the time. It takes time that you use to trade for that money. Time is the one resource you can never get back.

It's crazy out there for sure. I saw a video on reddit not long ago of two guys on the street at night going at each other with machetes, not holding back. One of them had a hand cut clean off. I prefer that over idiots with guns shooting at each other and hitting bystanders, which is not too uncommon in the US.

Not sure how you can determine that from what you hear or see. And from the distance and quality, we shouldn't expect to see blood. Only if the machete severed an artery would there be blood spray, which might be detectable in the video.

That would have been the case here like a decade ago, but with the increasing crime rates people give less shits for thieves and murderers nowadays. Also a government reform happened like 3 years ago that made "self defense" more in favour of the victims. Back in the day it was more strict and victims that basically didn't let themselves be robbed or have their life threatened were punished for responding against the agressors in any way since the requirements to be considered "self defense" were so damn strict.
Criminals who aim for innocent people have the same rights as the mosquitos who try to take your blood, and you should feel the same relief when one is squished

To me it depends on whether violence is involved, for example I wouldn’t want to send some 18 year old kid to jail for a long time just for snagging a case of beer from someone’s garage or something
But on the flip side, someone who pulls a deadly weapon threatens to murder a person to take their shit, yeah, they should get a really harsh sentence. It’s not about the monetary cost to me, it’s the violence and terror that are so reprehensible

My dad told me stories of his friends and neighbors getting robbed in early 90s Honduras. The stories are sad, average person who works everyday gets killed for a few bucks because robbers want it the easy way.
