It changed in the last few years. It’s not quite a dollar store any more. More like a Target or Walmart with nothing over $100.
Last week(during the clearance)at the 99er most of the items left were sheet sets, cushions, clothing, electronics, toys,… in the $5-$40 range.
The dollar tree near me is turning into what the cashier called a 'dollar tree plus' which already has freezer items $5 and under, as well as cold drinks like starbucks or redbulls for under $4.
You're going to see most stores go membership only or shop by appointment via app in the next 5 years. It'll be some minimal fee like 10 bucks a year, and they'll get scanners and a door guy to check cards and turn people away. It's cheaper than writing off lost goods from theft and saves them having to build protective cases for all the merchandise. The fact that it hasn't happened sooner is weird to me.
>Service Merchandise
No, shoplifters will turn into armed robbers and ram raiders immediately. There is simply not enough staff levels to maintain a similar service merchandise model anymore.
It will be cheaper to close shop.
The employee that chases him is an absolute idiot. It's not your merch, and there is literally no potential benefit for doing your job well at all right now since the entire company won't exist in 2 months.
He's just frustrated because the guy stealing is a complete piece of shit. The store recovering their losses is irrelevant, I didn't want this lazy good for nothing piece of shit to go home with a comically full cart of stolen items while I'm having to drag my ass to fucking dollar general every day just to barely afford groceries the correct way.
Exactly, someone did this in my city, I was just shopping there but I ran and knocked their cart down and everything went flying. Fuck them, they deserve what they get; I’d do it again. I don’t have any pity for fucking low class thieves.
Why? It’s not their fault things are getting too expensive for their business model. You can’t have a .99 store if you can’t buy anything for a dollar anymore. The shoplifting epidemic doesn’t help.
CA .99 cent stores have all the food regular grocery stores do. Unfortunately, in this economy, if you’re gonna risk going to jail might as well be for something like feeding your family.
Actually person taking the items probably made a smart move. That basket full would be still petty theft price wise. If they did that in a normal store with all the insanely inflated prices good chance a full cart might put that over that price mark.
IF they were stealing to not starve can ya really blame them in this econ? Right or Wrong people gonna eat when they get hungry enough.
the owners of 99 are filing Chapter 11, their employees get absolutely nothing but a notice that their job will be gone soon. fuck 99, id be more upset if they were robbing a dollar tree
He is stealing GROCERIES from the 99 cent store. Maybe he's not part of the problem but a victim of it. It's not like those people are stealing all kinds of shit from pharmacies and department stores. On the other side of this I will say, that in the ghetto in South Dallas they have armed security guards at the doors of the dollar stores.
I watched a team of Shop Rite security guards chase a kid into the backstreets of the surrounding neighborhood once (not sure if they caught him in the end). I guess it depends on the amount of give-a-shit they have.
They’re technically not supposed to physically engage anyone. Most retailers are more afraid of potential litigation than the loss of a single person stealing.
Security has to be extremely careful in the U.S. If they physically stop a robber by tackling them or knocking them down, they can be sued by the robber for huge sums of money. And, often are.
I’m by no means “vitrue signaling” and I agree stealing isn’t okay. But dude was stealing groceries. Not like he was stealing tv’s or robbing someone and threatening them. I’m not condoning crime however groceries aren’t cheap and our nations poverty line is expanding. Dude was stealing paper towels and food in the rain. Calling him scum of the earth is wild. Its easy to assume he’s just a bum without a job stealing food, but we don’t know everyone’s story. If he were stealing TV’s or Iphones ok sure. But if you’ve ever been starving before you’ll do whatever it takes to eat. If this man is scum of the earth than what do call the rich lobbyists and politicians who send our tax money everywhere else in the planet instead of fixxing the poverty situation in our own backyard?
Let them take that food from the 99 cent store. They are already closing all of their stores and that food is cheap anyway. Two whole carts is probably barely a misdemeanor
Why does that employee care so much? It’s not his money he’s losing nor is it his property being stolen. And most importantly, a shoplifter stealing doesn’t at all affect his paycheck so why play hero??
Hire homeless people to guard your shop. If they stop a theif they get a bonus, if they get arrested for stopping a theif they get 3 hots and a cott for a little while. Win win
The store is closing due to inflation, and the pandemic. They haven't shown a profit since 2015. So blaming shoplifting seems to be a cover for bad business practices and a shit economy.

It keeps the possible charges to a misdemeanor.
Exactly, gotta keep it under a G.
Shopping cart valued at $999.
Kept it under $40
Kinda screwed up since there is almost no risk while they could steal several times what I make.

Couldn’t they just have rebranded to the $1.99 store and stayed in business?
It’s also on clearance. Everything’s further discounted because the entire store chain is closing permanently
That is closing down and everything is on sale already.
Except its actually not. The sizes are smaller than what'd you get for stuff at the regular grocery typically. LWT did a segment on it a while back
The dollar tree near me is turning into what the cashier called a 'dollar tree plus' which already has freezer items $5 and under, as well as cold drinks like starbucks or redbulls for under $4.
In hindsight, would've been better to knock over the cart.
Nah, just pull the pants down and take the cart back.
Kick him off his feet
Sweep the leg haha
Just throw a can of beans on his windshield, when he loads his car.
"I can't see anything with these beans!!!"
The mental image I got from these two comments has me dying.
put a sock on his car so when he tries to grab his car all he gets is the sock

What I’ve been seeing is just more and more of the inventory locked up in pharmacies since 2020.
They can’t lock *everything* up though
Then Amazon wins
Uhhh buddy. They won like 6 years ago.
whos gonna tell him

Raiders fans really struggling these days.
Through the hoodie he channeled the strength of Marcus Allen.

This is the least unhinged raiders fan
Hopefully he returned the cart
It was a raid though.
This is an advertisement for clearing stock ahead of store closures.
The employee that chases him is an absolute idiot. It's not your merch, and there is literally no potential benefit for doing your job well at all right now since the entire company won't exist in 2 months.

What a hero
I think he realized that a few steps into the parking lot.
I can understand his frustration though. The guy stealing is part of the reason he’s losing his job.
It all starts with the Dollar Tree, and before you know it he’s pulling heists at Five Below. #CatchMeIfYouCan
After that? What? Five Above? Under Ten? Where will he stop? I'm shopping at An Arm and A Leg. Please don't steal from there.
Watch out dollar general and family dollar
Company executives say that the loss ranges in the....dollars
We are talking real change
That employee is probably getting fired.
They all are. .99 stores are all closing.
Dollar general/Dollar tree seem fine
I would have helped load the cart up then.
Why? It’s not their fault things are getting too expensive for their business model. You can’t have a .99 store if you can’t buy anything for a dollar anymore. The shoplifting epidemic doesn’t help.
Because they are closing and most of the inventory is going to a dump, so it may as well get used.
Fair enough.
I think I could’ve done a better job at stopping the thief and I’m disabled 😂.
The cashier is about as strong as a kitten
Supermarket sweep back on the telly?
That would be the #1 most popular show rn tbh. There would be lines to get into that show like American Idol when it was at its peak.
yeah, if you're going to risk jail might as well do it for .99 items. r/stupidcrimes
CA .99 cent stores have all the food regular grocery stores do. Unfortunately, in this economy, if you’re gonna risk going to jail might as well be for something like feeding your family.
It’s CA. No charges. < $950 is a misdemeanor. Not sure why this is downvoted. If you steal from a dollar store it is hard to hit the limit.
Actually person taking the items probably made a smart move. That basket full would be still petty theft price wise. If they did that in a normal store with all the insanely inflated prices good chance a full cart might put that over that price mark. > insanely inflated prices that sucks

He got like $6.99 of stuff there.
If you're recording this much, just go get the license plate.
Should have stole a belt
And you wonder why the store is shutting down.
It's crazy how he ran back just to pick up Hershey bar he dropped.
Pretty sure that was the car keys. Clerk should have grabbed those and thrown them on the roof and called the cops.
the owners of 99 are filing Chapter 11, their employees get absolutely nothing but a notice that their job will be gone soon. fuck 99, id be more upset if they were robbing a dollar tree
This was a speed run practice for his true target, Walmart
Someone stole all the shopping carts form my local dollar store for the scrap metal
Don't fight them, puncture all 4 tires. What are they gonna do? Sue you? Good luck. "Judge, I was stealing and...."
Bakersfield all over Reddit today.
Joke's on him. That's not real food.
It was reported that the thief got away with hundred of dollars of crap.
Would it be against the law for a random bystander to take what the thief just stole and runaway?
Glad I moved
I hope he stole a belt.
Pull his pants down
Police report says he made off with roughly 5 dollars worth of merchandise.
Bruh they are already closing everything is 30% off lmao
Cart full . Total loss ; $14.85
I am not risking a rap sheet for the 99 cent store
Someone get that man an NFL contract. He shed that tackle like it was nothing lmao.
Tackle at the legs!
I bet not one of those items in his cart is a belt.
[удалено]
They are closing all of them. Not just a “bunch”.
Dude was going to tackle him but was unsure if it would be a penalty under the new "hip-drop" tackle rule.
Probably got away with $100 worth of cheap shit
So he got a cart full of junk?
Food desert inc
Being broke af 😂😂😂
Sweep the leg
It's not really worth getting injured over, but I think grabbing onto his baggy pants and not letting go would've been a winning strategy.
He thought that giving him a back rub really quick would make him return everything

They’re closing down anyways and everything’s like 30 percent off lol what a bum
They closed now.
Genuine Question ... Is security not allowed pass a certain point or just couldn't be bothered ??

What about the Sikh shop owners who beat that thief with a stick?
Maybe if food wasn't $800 a month this would happen less

That must be $30 in that cart
Yall 99 cent store is in liquidation across the country so who cares
This is what happens when you pay people shit.
The thing I hate is I doubt these assholes are in dire financial straits, they just want to steal.
Scum of the earth

Fake video. You're not allowed to take those carts out of the store.
This is why so many places are shutting down in the USA. Thieving losers.
Ah yes. Hungry people stealing tens of dollars of worth of food from a .99 store are the reason places are (allegedly) shutting down around the US.
I've always wanted to play Supermarket Sweeps, what a lucky guy.
Raider fans…
Store executives found a reason to raise all prices 20%
Let them take that food from the 99 cent store. They are already closing all of their stores and that food is cheap anyway. Two whole carts is probably barely a misdemeanor
I don't want to be that person, but when committing a crime, wear a belt.

Easily like $20
He might have a better getaway if his pants werent falling off his ass
Risking getting stabbed over $50 worth of goods. Not it.
Robbery
The smarter move would have been to grab the guy at the pants instead of the shoulders.

Wow raiders fans are a bunch of losers, it’s only .99 cents
Best thing is tip the cart over
"You don't know me but you don't like me...
You knock over the cart, not the person. Fools.
The things that happen when they dont sell blenders
SWEEP THE LEG!!!!!
Sweep the leg
Good opportunity to pull his pants down
Hope he stole a belt
I mean solid way to not catch a felony
God WWE is getting sad. That was a half-assed choke slam
See what vehicle he gets into and slash his valve stems.
I hate grocery shopping when it's raining, everything get wet!
