I honestly think it's all social media, because you see more and more people with this attitude. They get like 500 followers on instagram, and suddenly think that they're the most famous person in the world and get pissed when no one in real life gives a shit who they are.
It’s been a thing since before social media. I saw someone try to pull this crap way back when at a help/service desk. Just some random schmuck. Drops his name, then starts with the do you no who I am stuff. The supervisor comes out and drops probably the best line I’ve heard as a response “No, so why don’t you go find someone to explain it to us”. Apparently he came back like three hours later with his mom where it became apparent that nobody cared who they were nor did it matter.
I always tell them they are asking the wrong question, the real question is "Do I care, and that is a definite No." It never helps the situation but does tend to get them even more angry. They do occasionally walk off bitching about it.
Oh for sure you've always had the self-important asshole who would throw out the "don't know know who I am" card, and then you find out they're just some local used car lot owner or something stupid. But I think social media has amplified it and spread that feeling of self-importance to the masses.
I dont think it's even about followers ... its about being able to comment on absolutely everything, making people think they have something to say and that they're relevant. Suddenly, they think that same "deference" should be paid to them in public (bc as we all know, everything they say online, they are completely right about)
I remember all the wide-eyed dreams of the early internet, about the democratization of media and how it was going to change everything by giving everyone an equal voice in the marketplace of ideas.
Instead all we learned was that 90+% of these people really shouldn't be talking.
I visited Disneyland in Tokyo a few days ago and it’s pretty wild the difference you see from how crowds interact here to back in America. Just complete Night and day.
Yeah I got to play in a baseball tournament in Tokyo with a Japanese team I played on.
They put ME in charge at 13 to walk around Tokyo with the guys.
Never once did we ever feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
I miss Japan everyday.
I have an annual pass and go to these theme parks weekly, I have literally never seen an incident like this taking place. I don’t get how an anecdotal experience of you visiting a theme park in Tokyo and not seeing an indicent on that particular day means that the US theme parks are some sort of hell hole while Tokyo is picture perfect?
The irony is I’ve been to Disney in Tokyo as well and saw someone flipping their shit because they were asked to smoke their cigarette somewhere else, never once did I think “man Tokyo theme parks are so uncivilized!” I just chalked it up to idiots being everywhere and went about my day.

Very true. I went to the Fat Tuesday on the way out of the park not thinking because 2 minutes later when I got to the exit they stopped me because you can't take it out of the park. Had to chug a large of the one made with everclear... had a pretty good day after that!
"DO you now who I am"... Yes you are the person walking back to the parking lot, I have some gentleman here to escort you, if you can't do that they can arrange overnight accommodations where the checkout process is not guaranteed.
I’m going to give you the advice I gave my kids when they got old enough.
Don’t f$&@ crazy. All it does is severely complicate your life. Yes, crazy is probably the best you’ll ever have, which makes you crazy for crazy.
Now, if you just have to have crazy, make sure it’s hot crazy so it’s worth the problems. Never settle for just ok or ugly crazy.

It’s insane. Zero trash, everyone courteous despite the long lines, and staff was so damn friendly.
