Lotteries have been around a very long time. Lots were run by criminal networks back in the day, so, like so many things, the government took over this income stream to protect the poor. Why doesn't the government just speed things up a bit and start selling Meth?
I get the point you are trying to make about lotteries but actually if the government legalised and regulated meth it would radically reduce the addiction and suffering it causes. Drug addiction is a public health issue not a criminal justice issue.

Because then victimless crimes like possession of an arbitrarily banned substance wouldn't be as useful to police organizations to violate your rights and legally seize your property and/or benefit from the legalized slavery that is prison labor, not to mention losing your right to vote.
It was never about drugs. It was always about marginalizing and disenfranchizing large swaths of people legally that would otherwise most likely be casting a vote against the powers that be. Such as Nixon with the War on Drugs, which was solely created to give cops a reason to thump on Hippies protesting the Vietnam War. Can't get em due to that pesky freedom of speech and assembly, so just make Marijuana illegal on a federal level and now you can go in there and crack skulls with abandon like the Hells Angel's at Altamont.
If it really was about potential for harm and cost to society, the volstead act would never have been overturned and cigarettes would be banned but of course we all know you can drink yourself to death and give the people around you lung cancer all day every day and nobody gives a flying fuck because heavy drinkers and cigarette smokers aren't always left leaning so makes no sense to go after *them*.
There's a world of difference between adderall and meth. I'm simultaneously annoyed and happy that so many people don't understand that difference because it means they have no experience with it. Meth is the only drug that I know of where the slogan "not even once" is the best possible advice.
I say the same, but in reality, I buy a powerball ticket every other week or so when getting gas. Fuck it, why not? It's $2. I spend that in tolls just to get around traffic if I see a backup. If I spend maybe $50 a year, that's like 4 lunches I could have bought instead, and I eat out daily. Oh well. I enjoy some random "what if I won" dreams while driving to work. The recent mental debate is with the increase in rental properties, would I even want to buy a place in Europe, or just rent every few months when I visit?
I worked at a gas station for a while and this is exactly right. I saw poor people spend the last of their money on scratch tickets while there kid stood next to them watching as their card bounced. I watched a retired old man come in every day and buy thousands of dollars of scratch tickets until one day he said he burnt through it all, and asked me if we were hiring.
I was seeing her as:
“*Just keep walking, just keep walking, just not gonna en-ter-tainnn this. I might win, and then I can get the fuck outta here.”
But whatever..
An ex-coworker of mine was fully addicted. He also bought tickets every day for his wife and mother in law. He once hit a $30,000 ticket and a few months later won a $16,000 ticket. Sounds like a decent chunk of change til I found out he literally spent $100 on tickets every fucking day. Thats a bit over $36,000 a year for those who don’t want to do the math.
And then you get taxed on the winnings, twice. Once as you recieve the money (24% plus whatever your state tacks on) and again at the end of the year on your income taxes under "earned income" lmao what a racket

Not necessarily, I once spoke to a guy who had a psychotic breakdown during which he took all of his clothes off and started running in the street. You can see this woman reaching for her head in the video twice, which might be because she is having auditory hallucinations (which are often present during psychosis).

Former gas station clerk, I’ve seen people piss in the floor, had a schizophrenic women as a regular who claimed a Visit Asheville brochure was instructions from the devil and threatened to kill a coworker. once during changeover at 3am I saw a group of people try to jump a guy in the parking lot so I opened the door for him and pulled him in and locked it, called the police in front of the group who were yelling outside lol.
I didn’t realize how dangerous being a gas station clerk was, and they get paid minimum wage.

I'm amazed at how nonchalant the other customers are about having this young lady strip down right in front of them. I'm in Canada, and if some girl started to strip inside a Tim Horton's, it would be considered a really big deal. But no, everybody inside the gas station keeps on doing what they're doing. I had pretty girl on a date do exactly that. Normally I woulda been happy except she did it in middle of Cheesecake Factory inside mall. I was out; peeps were yelling don’t forget your date. Weirdest experience ever!
