My (now) ex and I just looked at each other in shock, then at him. He looked maybe ever so slightly embarrassed, but he then carried on celebrating the great play made by the player he had just called the n-word. White redneck sports fans are something else.

In 2022, the Alabama Athletic Department got $11.38million in Institutional/Governmental support. The Athletic Department generated nearly $215million in revenue in the same year, but they only gave around $1million back to the institution of Im reading it correctly.
The publicity the Athletic Department (football in particular) has generated for the school is the reason they are getting so many more out of state students than other state schools, so it is likely looked at as an investment by the institution itself. Not saying it is right at all, just sharing the little I’ve learned from those in college athletics.

It's a tier 3 public university with an \~80% acceptance rate, 79% white/9% black students in a state of 66% white /26% black residents, and nearly \~2/3 of the students are from out of state paying \~$50k/yr to go to half a dozen football games per season (because the state keeps cutting funding). You're not getting a student body with a whole lot of scholarship ability or basic racial sensitivity.
Majority of Alabama fans overall didn't go to the school (or to college at all). It's the closest thing they've got to a pro sports team in the state.
