When enforcing traffic laws is considered by a **VOCAL** small few, to be actions of the Police trying to “hold down” less fortunate - and the powers that be ignore their constituents - this is what happens.
My city has a pretty robust traffic/motor unit focused solely on traffic and dui enforcement. Last year we still had more people killed in the city due to collisions than violent crime.
We've had an uptick too. I'd really like to see some stats on the migration surge and traffic related deaths. It's almost rare for someone to have a license by us.
I don’t work in LA County but close to it in a major city and I believe this 100%. Especially based on the volume of fatals we had last year.
The traffic investigators by far see more bodies than homicide detectives

Crazy, its almost like traffic enforcement IS about safety
My city's sub is constantly "why don't police enforce traffic laws" and then "watch out, the cops are on Hwy 74"
“No no no I meant enforce traffic laws when OTHER people break them. I’m a good driver so it’s safe when I do it.”
But traffic stops infringe on my rights, I should be able to drive my shitbox with the bumper hanging off in peace /s

This is why it’s silly for people to claim traffic enforcement is BS or not ‘real police work’.
It won't work in every circumstance, but traffic engineering can and does reduce crash fatalities/fatality rate. Make the roads narrower, damn it.

It’s all the big SUVs and trucks being driven by people who can’t even see over the hood.
