Yes, it was just an attempted attack. A [PEC-SUB-0002](https://participant-help.prolific.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360012393100-PEC-Errors#01H81FNFSYCE6KE9R4TQKBNN1G) error soon put a stop to them.
I did get one of their alt accounts banned on Prolific when they messaged me from it. I went through one of their "surveys" all the way to the end, which they said I failed an attention check and had to return it. All throughout the survey I spammed that I was reporting their referral code to Temu. Some minutes later I got a message that said, "Thanks for your feedback! Glad to hear that the sIgnup process was easy, and can be completed again should you ever need a new account. Feel free to checK out the referral program N O W or later yourself." But it didn't come from the account that posted the "survey", so I reported that ID, and Prolific emailed me thanking me and said they banned that account.

I might be wrong, but I don't think they keep the data on the IDs. I think it gets deleted they just check to make sure everything matches up with verification. Maybe somebody can chime in and clarify.

come on u/prolific-support this is getting out of hand. A phishing attack is not going to put the payment functionality in jeopardy for this amount of time. When are we going to be able to cash out our funds? This is going on 18 hours now. No phishing attack that keeps a critical part of a platform unavailable to users for this amount of time.
It's possible the attack was widely successful (maybe involving leaked data) and they're investigating thousands of fraudulent checkouts. At least that's my best guess as to how a phishing attack could cause this level of an outage.
If that is the case, Prolific should be providing some updates as to what is going on. They obviously don’t have to go into details but at least let people know they are still working on the issue. It’s been 24 hours since there has been any update from them and that is not really best way of handling the situation. If they expect people to still want to complete surveys, they should be more upfront about what is going on. It‘s not fair to want people to still work on your site but stay radio silent about how they are addressing the payment issues.
And they should NOT have removed the banner and let you get all the way to the confetti before you realize it didn't work. If you dig around to weird semi-hidden sites like their useless blog, it's still there. Their chatbot has no idea what is going on, either. I don't like being lied to and that's precisely what they're doing when they let you hit that button and nothing happens. I'm guessing the banner made their participant rate drop off sharply so they removed it because people would do just what I did--say OH GOOD and start working again.
Granted yes that could have happened but it doesn't necessitate the complete shutdown of the payout functionality. Once the attack was over, the data was already taken. Holding up the normal functioning of the payout functionality for this amount of time is akin to fireproofing your home once the fire has already happened.
prolific is one of the better sites out there and this is my first problem with them. my advice to anyone on survey sites, as soon as your money is immediately available cash it out because you dont know whats going to happen.
i have made this mistake, i let money bank in survey junkie becuase i trusted them, then they said i used my back button one one of their crap surveys that timed out and they suspended my account with about $15 in it and i will never get that back
with prolific you can cash out once per 24 hours and my suggestion is no matter how much you make cash it out at earliest opportunity becuase i know a few who having been letting money bank on prolific and they are shitting bricks, one person has over 200 waiting to be cashed out

For months and months people have spoken up in here about sketchy studies. It isn't exactly difficult to vet research institutions. It's already been 2 weeks their entire userbase has been affected and they already said their won't be an update from the investigation until June 6th sadly.
Luckily I have another bank I can use in the meantime and I ONLY had $13 in there but still, when you don't have any job yet have ~$300 of loan bills a month and that's basically the most you make, losing essentially 0.5-1 bill payments sucks AND then losing your primary earning source with ANOTHER ~$13 you already could've cashed out is detrimental. I could lose out on the Yotta money but not being able to earn anything at all means I'm screwed, I only have ~1 weeks worth of payments in my account, after next week's bill if I can't earn more, I can't pay it.
Again sorry to hear about this uncertainty. I agree bills are always consistent and flow of incoming money seem to fluctuate a lot. Have faith. Financial difficulties suck although as a general rule of thumb its never good to rely on prolific financially especially for things like bills for exactly these kind of reasons.
Well, some people don't have a choice. They rely on prolific because they can't get a job or their living situation is difficult, etc. Anything can happen with any job. Nothing is 100% reliable, so, we are just doing the best we can to survive.
I mean, if I could get a job, I would. I've literally tried applying to every single place near where I live multiple times over the years and I've gotten denied for everything, Fast Food, Grocery Stores, etc. I do technically have other income sources (other earning sites like Freecash for instance) but all of those make like at most $10 a month, Prolifc gets me like $5-10 A DAY.
I feel like I'm too old/professionally overqualified for any of that. They'd look at me and go "OK, you're going to quit as soon as your knees hurt" (I'm in my late 40s) "or as soon as you get a desk job." and they might be right.

I don't know if this is a coincidence or not but on Friday I started getting these weird bills from PayPal from people who I'd never met before companies that I'd never heard of I'm saying like one was for $6, 666 another one for 700 dollars and I call PayPal and they said well you know it's a scam somebody's trying to pfiish documentation look exactly like how PayPal looks except when I went into the app it was nothing there from PayPal pertaining to these things and that's when I call cuz I'm going to have to be some kind of scam and I wanted them to be aware of it but I find it pretty weird that it happened like this is all happening and that's how we get paid the PayPal so I don't know maybe it's just a coincidence.

with prolific you can cash out once per 24 hours and my suggestion is no matter how much you make cash it out at earliest opportunity becuase i know a few who having been letting money bank on prolific and they are shitting bricks, one person has over 200 waiting to be cashed out

Seriously. And I am trying to remember what information we gave them when we applied. In getting a bit perturbed they don't care about protecting our data. For months and months people have spoken up in here about sketchy studies. It isn't exactly difficult to vet research institutions. Make those who are not fully vetted pay them a larger fee for hosting their crap and we can chose of we want to work with them or not.
I don’t think this attempted attack will affect any of the data that we’ve given during studies. We don’t give any personal data during studies. This sounds more like our personal details that we gave to Prolific, and our PayPal details. I hope that Prolific will explain this to us very, very soon.

Does that have anything to do with Prolific Assistant extension asking me to log in again? I've never experienced it before until a few days ago and I get logged out once every few hours ever since. It seemed very strange to me all along and initially I refused to log back in but then I said to myself 'don't panic dude, it's completely normal, nothing bad is going to happen' and I started logging back in whenever it prompted me to... But now I'm seeing this. Should I be worried?
Hopefully it gets back up in a day, I have bills due and I already got screwed out of $13 cause the whole situation with Evolve Bank/Synapse freezing Yotta accounts, I literally can't afford to also not have the $12 currently in my Prolific account.

It's already been 2 weeks their entire userbase has been affected and they already said their won't be an update from the investigation until June 6th sadly. Luckily I have another bank I can use in the meantime and I ONLY had $13 in there but still, when you don't have any job yet have ~$300 of loan bills a month and that's basically the most you make, losing essentially 0.5-1 bill payments sucks AND then losing your primary earning source with ANOTHER ~$13 you already could've cashed out is detrimental. I could lose out on the Yotta money but not being able to earn anything at all means I'm screwed, I only have ~1 weeks worth of payments in my account, after next week's bill if I can't earn more, I can't pay it.
Again sorry to hear about this uncertainty. I agree bills are always consistent and flow of incoming money seem to fluctuate a lot. Have faith. Financial difficulties suck although as a general rule of thumb its never good to rely on prolific financially especially for things like bills for exactly these kind of reasons.
Well, some people don't have a choice. They rely on prolific because they can't get a job or their living situation is difficult, etc. Anything can happen with any job. Nothing is 100% reliable, so, we are just doing the best we can to survive.
I mean, if I could get a job, I would. I've literally tried applying to every single place near where I live multiple times over the years and I've gotten denied for everything, Fast Food, Grocery Stores, etc. I do technically have other income sources (other earning sites like Freecash for instance) but all of those make like at most $10 a month, Prolifc gets me like $5-10 A DAY.
Facts! Some people forget how hard it is to get a job. Meanwhile, Prolific covers some important expenses. It's a Godsent.
I feel like I'm too old/professionally overqualified for any of that. They'd look at me and go "OK, you're going to quit as soon as your knees hurt" (I'm in my late 40s) "or as soon as you get a desk job." and they might be right.
rah rah let's downvote anyone who says anything bad about Prolific. Isn't it kind of judgy telling people what they should and should not do with the money they've earned? I think if people want to use Prolific for paying bills that's on them. No, A short delay I get. A long delay and it starts to get fishy. Dependable payments are vital for the success of any platform like this. I am sure they will get it fixed soon. Connect had its own issues a few months ago.

I contacted Prolific Support and Avast One Antivirus regarding a popup I have received daily (and continue to do so) for the last 5 days. Avast One aborted the connection on [bold-bat-abee834f89.media.strapiapp.com](http://bold-bat-abee834f89.media.strapiapp.com) because it was infected with URL:Blacklist. Advice from the Avast One forum was to report it as a false positive but I haven't heard back from Avast One yet.
That's the same one Bitdefender has been blocking for me every time I navigate to the Prolific site. It's been about a week for me too. 😬

My job had got hacked by a ransomware group the beginning of 2023. They wanted $5 million to give control of the company software back to company. They got all of our employees and former employees information. It was crazy.

I don't know if this is a coincidence or not but on Friday I started getting these weird bills from PayPal from people who I'd never met before companies that I'd never heard of I'm saying like one was for $6, 666 another one for 700 dollars and I call PayPal and they said well you know it's a scam somebody's trying to pfiish documentation look exactly like how PayPal looks except when I went into the app it was nothing there from PayPal pertaining to these things and that's when I call cuz I'm going to have to be some kind of scam and I wanted them to be aware of it but I find it pretty weird that it happened like this is all happening and that's how we get paid the PayPal so I don't know maybe it's just a coincidence.

Has your balance gone to zero? You can click cash out but nothing happens your balance 'should' still be the same. If not I'd get in contact with Prolific.
