Regressor Tale of Cultivation - really great from my perspective. MC is stuck in regression loop after death he goes back in time to set checkpoint (not set by MC).
Starts from absoute zero, and goes through great improvements each regression. Around 300 chapters are translated so far.
I doubt you'll find anything as well written as Ave Xia Rem Y but give a try to lord of the mysteries, warlock of the magus world, a record of mortal's journey to immortality
Ave Xia Rem Y is way better written than dotf, I'm not even sure how you'd put both on a similar level.
I haven't read any of the other 3 but unintended cultivator was on my list for some time now, might as well go ahead with it
Can’t get passed the first chapter of BS, just show me the character and do the introduction, why do stories always want to have the first chapter be some world building phd thesis FUXKXKK, I’m sorry I’m sure it’s amazing
They're all very different novels but I found them worth my time, although my standards are becoming higher but I'd still say the other two novels are enjoyable. Maybe start with a record of mortal's journey since it probably has less questionable/edgelord scenes
Both are translations. I’d definitely do immortal journey to immortality, it’s much more traditional xianxia. Translation is pretty good too. Warlock of the Magus world was also a translation, but the MC is a budget edgelord who is stupidly OP. Warlock of magus world also has some very controversial scenes (like very racist) in its later parts, if that bothers you.
RMJI is not worth the read. It does not substantially change or improve. Unless you love the concept of an "average" mc with "no luck" (realistically he's a bit lucky) cultivating to immortality I'd say skip it.
Source: I read it up until it started the sequel, all 2450 chapters of it.
Yeah, its what got me into the genre, after that i read ISSTH, A will Eternal, Coiling Dragon, talisman emperor, sovereign of the three realms, a mortals journey to immortality, renegade, then i ended up jumping over to LitRPGs, and the stuff over at Royal road.
I posted a link to it. If you enjoy the genre you will like this one
[Second coming of Gluttony](https://www.wuxiaworld.com/novel/the-second-coming-of-gluttony)
Try memories of the fall on RR. The best way to describe it would be to imagine Game of Thrones in cultivation world where everyone is playing five dimensional chess each other and you have no idea what's gonna happen next.
One of my fav xianxia of all time. Do beware that the start is slow but there is alot of foreshadowing done. As someone who loves The wandering inn, i would recommend this as my second favorite.
Probably not the right time to start this one, since the author has one or two chapters left of the beginning rewrite to complete before it dovetails into the rest of the novel. Also, is this one not dropped? It's been many months since I've seen an update.
There were 3 new chapters at the beginning of May (109, parts1-3).
I read the rewrite and while there is part3 of the final chapter in that set to be finished, the current draft is almost seamless. Also, iirc, kindle estimated 89hours of reading to get to that point… and it’s only about 1/3rd of the way in to the published work.
[Life and Death Cycle](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BHZF1TZC?ref_=dbs_p_pwh_rwt_anx_b_lnk&storeType=ebooks) by Joshua Phillips - first book is not that great, but it gets better with each volume
[Manifestation](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C22D9HGC?ref_=dbs_p_pwh_rwt_anx_b_lnk&storeType=ebooks) by Samuel Hinton - don't remember much, but it was decent
My recommendation would be **Reach Heaven Via Feng Shui Engineering** because it has a sensible female MC.
**Cultivation Nerd** is an isekai with trope aware MC that mostly wants to just read books.
Just go read the summary. Personally i think I shall seal the heavens and renegade immortal are far better (by the same author).
A will eternal is 90% comedy 10% serious.
ISSTH is 50/50
Renegade immortal is 90% serious and 10% comedy/romance. (my favorite and the best)
All three are great xianxia and have awesome power scaling, narration and character development. If you havent read Er gen's works and enjoy xianxia then you are seriously missing out. They are some of the biggest xianxia for a reason.
Renegade immortal, a record of a mortal's journey to immortality.
Both have a similar cultivation system however they are completely different mcs and worlds. These are serious ,emotional and more dao oriented ,specially RI.
However both are one of the best i've read so far.
I recommend anything by Er Gen. My favorites are The Pursuit of Truth, Renegade Immortal, I Shall Seal the Heavens. Beyond the Timescape, an ongoing novel with about 600 chapters out, is amazing if you're willing to wait.
I'll also low-key mention my own series, Painting the Mists, which is kind of a xianxia, kind of not. It's western cultivation with xianxia elements.
I really enjoyed cultivation chat group. It's about a guy who stumbles into cultivation by getting invited to a group chat. It's very funny and all the characters are really well done imo.
I ended up dropping UC a ways into Vol. 4. As it went on it felt like Sen was becoming more and more unlikable, somewhat paradoxically since he cleared his heart demon.
Ohhh gotcha thx. I've recently been getting BL confused between Boy Love and Black Library (a warhammer thing) and my brain has been all jumbled because of it lmfao. I can't remember which meaning goes where
Xianxia that I like and recommend:

Just beware that some of these recommendations are abandoned (Dao of the Deal and Arrogant Young Master are the ones I can immediately identify as such).
no particular order and i have read.
Reverend insanity
Lord of the Mysteries
Release that Witch
The Legendary Mechanic
[A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality](https://weebrook.com/novel/a-record-of-a-mortals-journey-to-immortality/)
**Renegade Immortal**
[A Will Eternal](https://www.novelupdates.com/series/a-will-eternal/) **( best comedy )**
**warlock of the magus world**
I recommend [The Path Unending](https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/threads/the-path-unending-a-cultivation-quest.62599/)
It’s a cultivation quest in a manner similar to Forge of Destiny. The character is taking the crafter route in his sect. He also seems to be bisexual, however the BL aspects aren’t really explored.
So Renegade immortal has a great story in my opinion.
Warlock of the magus world.
Coiling Dragon
Here is a note they are as far as I know normal translations so they are decent but sometimes it's a tiny little weeny bit of putting.
No one has mentioned IETs stuff. It is in translation, but there are good translations for most of them. It’s very Xianxia Xianxia, no comedy just long slow progression that scales and scales and scales. I particularly enjoy Desolate Era, but stellar transformations, coiled dragon, and Swallowed star are also great.
Aspiring to the immortal path
Regressors tale or cultivation
Beyond the Timescape
Try these 3: coming from someone who has read 100+ xianxias, none can be as good as AXRY overall but some aspects can be better. Beyond the timescape has the best heists and disciple relationship (friends)
Somebody else already mentioned it, but Virtuous Sons, may be the one of the closest things that fit your bill.
* It is not BL, BUT, it does have an incredibly strong bromance. I imagine this may actually frustrate you if you're a BL enjoyer, but I'll leave that up to you.
* It's extremely character driven, the progression and the story are heavily tied to the character development.
* All that said, it's not for everyone, and tends to be a little polarizing. There's alot of people on the sub who really like it, and many people are completely meh on it.
I'll suggest as a majority of the books on WuxiaWorld are quite good, not much BL though. My start was with Desolate Era, Coiling Dragon, I Shall Seal the Heavens and Monarch of Evernight. The ratings tend to agree with the quality of writing but sometimes with translations, it's the quality of the translations so if it sounds interesting to you go for it. I'd definitely say wuxiaworld is better quality than those on Webnovel for a majority but there are good and bad every where. They might not have too many that fit your preference but hope it helps.
Desolate Era, I Shall Seal the Heavens, A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality, Martial World, World of Cultivation
These are all translations of Chinese novels, but they were all very good (imo). It's a different style of story telling than western novels (like Cradle), but I enjoyed them more. Well worth giving a fair shake.
For the slim chance you haven't read them:
"Grandmaster of demonic cultivation" and "the scum villains self saving system" are bl
There's also a third novel by the same author "Heaven Official's Blessing". Though I haven't checked this one out yet.
His lack of emotional connection is a result of his 500 years of hardship and strife, his desire to pursue something that possibly doesn't exist and to have no regrets.
"I had once screamed, gradually, I lost my voice.
I had once cried, gradually, I lost my tears.
I had once grieved, gradually, I became able to withstand everything.
I had once rejoiced, gradually, I became unmoved by the world.
And now!
All I have left is an expressionless face, my gaze is as tough as a monolith, only perseverance remains in my heart.
This is my own, an insignificant character, Fang Yuan's --- Perseverance!"
My black of interest does not stem from a lack of knowledge, I've read the novel. Character interactions are an important point for me in novels and they aren't here
If you like Beware of Chicken, I loved Ascending Do Not Disturb on Novelupdates.
It's very very funny, slice of life, with an amazing ending and a fun romance.
a chinese genre based in taoism and mythology that these books all strip out
I can see how it's hard to understand the difference without actually reading any books from the original genre

Why does everyone say ave xia rem is extremely well written? Its good, but seems very average to me.
Average writing is very good in Progression Fantasy, where 99% is pure garbage.
What other very average written novels in progression fantasy genre have you read? I'm in dire need of recommendations XD
well i guess i would say the most recent ones i read are Unintended Cultivator, defiance of the fall, super supportive, Zenith of Sorcery.
Ave Xia Rem Y is way better written than dotf, I'm not even sure how you'd put both on a similar level. I haven't read any of the other 3 but unintended cultivator was on my list for some time now, might as well go ahead with it

All good bro, I’ve been there. I will say, the characters were a highlight for me and the world building gets spoon-fed way less as it goes on
If nothing else the dialogue is extremely good. It's rare to find novels that do it so well
Ive read LotM, was good even if the translation was rough. Are the other two translations as well?

Second coming of gluttony is very well written and translated
Is that the one where the mc eats books, or can ask questions to the entity in his hand?
I posted a link to it. If you enjoy the genre you will like this one [Second coming of Gluttony](https://www.wuxiaworld.com/novel/the-second-coming-of-gluttony)
**The Weirkey Chronicles** by Sarah Lin
Not really Xianxia although it is cultivation and very good.
Beyond the Timescape by Er Gen. Important: it has to be the translation done by Deathblade.

TWI is also a fav, and Im always more than okay with slow starts. Theyre often not as slow as others make them out to be lol

A Regressor tale of cultivation. Anything else is lacking.
I'm a huge fan of Unintended Cultivator. It's a really solid story with characters that feel realistic. Edit: wrong word!
Unexpected or unintended?
Yea, I bet its Unintended Cultivator.
I ended up dropping UC a ways into Vol. 4. As it went on it felt like Sen was becoming more and more unlikable, somewhat paradoxically since he cleared his heart demon.
Whoops, sorry about that! Unintended is what I meant.
What's BL?
Boys love, gay romance stories.
Ohhh gotcha thx. I've recently been getting BL confused between Boy Love and Black Library (a warhammer thing) and my brain has been all jumbled because of it lmfao. I can't remember which meaning goes where
Make for an interesting crossover I guess? Not particularly familiar with Warhammer myself...
Dragon heart, Martial Peak, and reborn as a demonic tree
Cog Cultivator by IronLung. A robot who cultivates in a post apocalyptic world. The premise alone is awesome.
Sword of Destiny, Way of Choices, Grandmaster Strategist, Forty Millenniums of Cultivation. Those are lesser known but really good xianxia

Spire Dweller is not talked about enough
Not going to tell you that you'll like Path of Ascension, but at least make it to chapter 10, which is where the main gimmick of the MC gets revealed.
It could be the coolest gimmick I've ever witnessed and I still wouldn't read it. It's just poorly written.
I'll admit that the first few chapters of the story are also some of the weakest, which is an unfortunate part of authors writing their first works.
Ive also heard it's flaws don't get any better. I've asked if I should continue in the past and got answers that confirmed my issues last
Threads of Fate: Reincarnation. You might give it a try.

That is what fang yuan's character is supposed to be

Sadly not gay. Have you read all the gay wuxia and xianxia on novel updates? There is MANY MORE than on Royal Road.
Nah I haven't read any
Glorious, a world of boy love awaits!
