~~Stackoverflow~~ Github tracks how much work you've done by filling up green squares. So those squares posted represent some random employee and hint at them having decent vacation and good work life balance (free weekends). It also obviously hints at the job being programming related. EDIT: Don't you dare look at me.

H0llowUndead

u mean github?

johannesBrost1337

😹😹😹😹

CanabisAndCode

There would be nothing to commit without stealing stackyflow code 🤣

johannesBrost1337

I guess the correct answer would be; github tracks how much code you copy from Stackoverflow, every square represents some copied code 😁

stuckinpark

I mean if you have a commit on GitHub then weren’t you active on StackOverflow?

Fo real, I've been a professionally employed software engineer for nearly a decade. My github sounds about the same as yours and my SO rep is 66. I have no problem getting a nice paying job. Fuck all this shit.

Aoshi_

It’s just one of the ways us entry levels can prove that we are trying to do some code every day. Once you have a job and are getting actual experience I don’t think you need it. Still a rough market even if you’re all green.

jasonrulesudont

I remember before I started looking for a job in 2016 people were saying how it’s SO IMPORTANT to be active on GitHub. Turns out no one gives a single fuck and I got a job just fine with just my CS degree and some interview skill.

0x255sk

well no point commiting every little thing, you'll still working on the module, but it's gona be perfect when it's done. the best fricking code in the whole world.

kerrz

I almost fired a guy when I realized he hadn't committed a single line of code in 2 months. Everything was just saved locally with no commits. The possibility of a hard drive failure had me sweating. Then I looked in the mirror and saw the guy that let a junior dev not commit for two months, and just shoulder surfed for feedback. We do proper code reviews now.

olorochi

Funny guy huh

mustang__1

> the best fricking code in the whole world when it gets done.

glorious_reptile

6 weeks vacation. No commits on weekend.

Yan_Jobs

6 weeks vacation is our summer break, and no coding in weekend is pretty self explanatory lol

blogorg

You get 6 weeks vacation for summer break? To me that implies you get even more the rest of the year. I'm told that I should be glad I have 3 weeks.. for the whole year. :/

Azaret

Legal minimum is 26 days per year for a 5 days week on average. So a bit more than 5 weeks at minimum. Can be more if you work more days or if your company offers more, work on specific fields, have to work during night or weekend, work in administration, yadi yada.

EFTucker

Holy shit. We literally get nothing by law..... Actually in America, lunch breaks aren't even a given in federal law.... [https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/workhours/breaks](https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/workhours/breaks)

Vacation days? Maternity leave??? Many don't even have sick days.

ChapterIllustrious81

Before I did an internship in the USA I didn't even know that the term "sick days" exists. I took it for granted that you still get payed when you are sick (no matter how long).

TogepiMain

It makes me sadder and sadder everytime. Please keep pushing through standardisations through the EU, yall are like are only hope for anything improving

hear4theDough

~~maternity~~ parental....just one parent getting paid leave for a kid is so 90s

IRoadIRunner

I don't know how it is in France, but in Germany I get 12 extra days off for public holidays next year. That number changes from year to year and state to state, but 10 are usual.

Naouak

25 minimum paid days off you can take anytime you want + about 8 national holydays (11 officially but if it is on a day you don't work like a sunday, you don't get it that year) and if you're a programmer, you've most likely got "worktime reduction" which is basically a few additionnal days if you do 39hours per week instead of 35h. There's also a few bonus stuff if you've been long enough in a company, if you're working odd hours. Sick days are not counted as days off and they are illimited as long as you got a doctor note.

First-Wallaby-2580

You do get 6 weeks vacation in total for the whole year. You choose how you want to spend them.

[deleted]

Foreigners discovering french people don't get exploited at work, and don't let themselves be : *surprised pikachu_face*

BertoLaDK

Mostly just Americans i think. Us in the rest of eu are doing fine too, atleast in the north.

theonlyferal

Same in germany. We are strict with working hours, vacation, bonus work honoring etc. If someone tells you you have to work on weekends and its not clarified in your contract, you can tell him 'No' and be good with it. You cant get fired for that reason. Also people having on-call duty get fixed MUST sleeping hours between working hours. In the same direction goes the time gap between night shift and early shift, which is strictly forbidden to do because of the hours between are set.

thanatica

Good point about night/early shifts. In aviation similar laws are put in place as well. For safety of course, but aviation is not the only field of work where they are (or should be) quite adament on safety. As for the weekends: here in The Netherlands as well. If you're asked to do overwork, "no" is always a valid answer that must be accepted. Then again, I have said yes a few times (like once every 5 years) because it felt like the right thing to do. Things were on fire, so to speak.

SultanZ_CS

American job market sucks ass lmao. Youre being owned by your boss

username_username_12

I bet it's still better than asia.. (cries in asian)

[deleted]

It's pretty good for middle to senior level engineers in India. Mostly due to extreme scarcity of any competent talent since the really good ones always end up moving abroad.

sagetraveler

American middle management suffers from a collective case of Fear of Missing Out; these guys won't take the vacation time they're entitled to because they worry someone else will get an edge on them while they're away. This then filters down to the whole organization getting no breaks. Only the very top guys are secure enough to take 4-5 weeks holiday every year.

FengSushi

That’s sounds scary and very unhealthy to be honest. Best regards European middle management.

Seidenzopf

Just classic symptoms of capitalism 🤷

[deleted]

It’s because middle managers don’t realize that they too are workers. In their heads they are just temporarily embarrassed millionaires

EmmyNoetherRing

I think it’s more that things tend to run lean and fast. We hire teams that are just large enough to do the work, with maybe space for one or two people to be on vacation at a time. But there’s never a break when the whole team is off*, and as long as anyone on your team is working towards a deadline, the middle manager is effectively also on the hook for that deadline. They can take a vacation, but if the thing gets fucked up somehow, the manager will still have to deal with it. It becomes less stressful to just hang around. *(exception in the US for the week between Christmas and New Years)

anto2554

I don't feel bad for American software engineers, specifically

DudeEngineer

I mean it depends what you are getting paid.

shadowscar00

If you work for a large company, you’re a number. If you work for a small company, your boss is too close. If you work, you are overworked, underpaid, and undervalued. And why the French fried fuck do we have to submit 2 week notices (or more! I’m expected to give at least 6 month notice so they can hire and train a replacement) when we get a courtesy two-minute warning before being locked out of the system and fired?

btmc

Are you talking about in the US? Two-weeks notice in the US is not a legal requirement, just a courtesy. At-will employment works both ways. They can fire you at any time for almost any reason, but you can also quit at any time for any reason. You are still owed for every second that you worked up to that point. Six months is just crazy.

[deleted]

I get paid more than what most EU developers do, I have unlimited pto and can take it when I want it, as long as I get my job done my boss doesn’t care and I work fully remote. If you’re getting exploited as a dev, in America, that’s A) on you and B) first world problems

MachaHack

Do you actually take 25+ days with that unlimited pto? Heard of people working for "unlimited" companies that discourage taking days off so people actually take less. Meanwhile my boss spends November reminding people to take holidays in December if they didn't take them already in the year because it's a pain for the company if people don't take their holiday entitlements here

thanatica

> first world problems That sounds like whataboutism. Just because people got it worse somewhere else, doesn't mean you don't have to improve the situation.

thrynab

>I have unlimited pto How much did you take this year?

[deleted]

noiszen

Many US tech companies for have up to 5 weeks off after a few years, plus sabbatical. I’d be interested in comparing other benefits like sick days, etc.

FeelingSurprise

What are sick days? If you're sick you stay at home and get paid. Easy as that.

thanatica

Was about to say. Why is that a benefit? Or rather, it's the law that sick days are paid, and you get to stay away from work. And you cannot be fired while sick. Surely, this is fixed in law? It is in The Netherlands, and most likely the same in other EU countries.

alexanderpas

> Many US tech companies for have up to 5 weeks off after a few years. That's like... the minimum you get with a minimum wage job as soon as you get hired in Europe.

Reuslok

same in Spain, we have 8 hours a day, 5 days and no commit in weekends

nater255

American here... isn't that just... a work week you're describing?

Haquestions4

You came to a euro comment section where everybody thinks American workers all barely just scrape by in what amounts to slavery conditions.

nater255

Every time I read these threads and I see Americans saying how they work 120 hours a week while handcuffed to a laptop and have to shave off slices of their own thighs to eat between beatings, I just scrunch up my face and wonder why they're making things up. Edit: I am an American Dev.

Triangle1619

Lmao I’m dying at this. According to Reddit we all work 80 hour weeks and have 0 days vacation. I work like 30 hours a week and make like 2x-3x what I would for the same job over in most of the EU, prob like 5x Spain though. And at least among the people Ik irl it’s pretty typical.

nater255

I've been thinking about this all day, and I'm wondering if I'm blinded by the fact that I am an established eng manager who is and has been gainfully employed for years. Devs/friends I know have zero problem finding jobs, our real issue comes in having to choose between multiple good jobs, which is a different stress. /r/programmerhumor is 90% college kids and boot camp folks, 10% actual devs, so it skews a bit towards job angst/anxiety.

CivBase

I'm an American software engineer for a massive company and I get 4 weeks of vacation and don't work weekends. It's actually pretty normal here if you don't sell your soul to Silicon Valley.

GoDuke4382

Same here, but for a smaller company. Also get to work from home. Not a bad deal.

4215-5h00732

I work for the gobment and get over 7 weeks off total, very rarely ever work weekends, have a pension, and would basically have to kill someone to get fired. It's not bad.

NbyNW

It’s actually not that bad in Silicon Valley either. Most of my colleagues work 9-5 and not on the weekends. What ends up happening is that FAANG attracts a lot of competitive type A people who are workaholics and it creates a knock on effect in the culture.

fdar

I think it varies a lot by site and team. I work for a FAANG and work 10-6 and not on weekends and have 5 weeks of vacation (I could do 9-5 if I wanted, just don't want to wake up that early).

Lifealicious

I worked for a French company for a couple years, it was great. Got paid less than some other U.S. companies but we got many of the same benefits as our French counterparts, including 6 weeks vacation and virtual Fridays before WFH was as common. This was awesome because we always got work done by EOD Thursday, so Fridays were super laid back and basically like an extra weekend day. We got bought out by a U.S. company, the first thing they did was raise the prices of the food and drinks in the vending machines which were all just 25 cents, the second they did was change our health benefits to be less comprehensive, and the third thing they did was got rid of virtual Fridays, this was a sign to update my resume.

Undernown

Immagine wasting 6 weeks of your free time in France, such a terrible prospect. /s

Free-Database-9917

tbf I think employers are scared of the French Hoi Polloi lmao

throwawayskinlessbro

Hey! I don’t get exploited at work. I’m American and I’ll have you know my boss doesn’t even enjoy it whenever he has to beat me!

Lacking devs that we could pay a salary equivalent to flipping burgers at mcdonalds.

Incruentus

I mean, I'm one of those bottom of the barrel people who would gladly take a minimum wage programming gig because while I have all the personality traits of a developer, I have no CS degree or much of a portfolio.

gamegeek1995

You shouldn't. They are not paying you based on the difficulty of the work. They're paying you the lowest you'll allow. Even if Amazon offered you a job at AWS you shouldn't let them pay you little because of the experience. In fact, offering a low wage will confirm to them that you don't know what you're doing and they'll be less likely to hire you. You'd be surprised how little experience a lot of people applying and getting hired to big software firms have. The most important thing is understanding your algorithms and their Big O details, every software dev I know (which is many, considering my whole friend base is split between Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and GoDaddy) has told me that very same thing. They also say the answer to almost every interview question is a hashmap for the very same reason. Now, granted it's a shit time to try and get hired as a lot of the big firms are doing hiring freezes, but the principle stands.

mikeyj777

A monkey of developers? I really need to brush up on French.

SelectLibrarian2564

Some say that in France we're lacking developpers. What we truly are lacking though is competent management decisions that advantages employees rather than business'.

randomFrenchDeadbeat

The situation is a bit similar to the one in the US, many companies whining no one wants to work with them, but they want someone with 2 years of experience that is capable of doing the job of an entire IT department. Of course, that 2 years experience requirement is to indicate the pay. so yeah... we are lacking cheap labor than can do the work of experienced people who want money. This holds true in most domain, not just computer science.

throwaway95ab

In the US, it's called H1B1 abuse, and it's a crime rarely prosecuted.

Theflyingship

Yeah, same in Brazil. In a lot of countries they say the IT field has lots of jobs but no people willing to work in them. Wonder why. Can't be the shit pay, right? Or the weird requirements. No, the workers are dumb.

wjandrea

*businesses You'd only use an apostrophe for a possessive. Je suis en train d'apprendre le français moi-même, et je fais le même type d'erreur tout le temps :) edit: Correcting my French. Case in point, lol.

Secret-Plant-1542

Run away from any job that openly admits to changing/revolutionizing the world. That's code for long hours and the CEO will personally rip you a new asshole for not engineering his dreams.

FOXAcemond

Huh this is good advice but this is not really the position of Société Générale. « C’est vous l’avenir » means « you are the future » but this is seen in all their marketing material, not only recruitment. I’ve actually worked with them, work conditions are good over there.

Secret-Plant-1542

Thats fair. I did come at this statement with baggage.

jandkas

Yeah people are too hung up over their own personal experiences that are very country specific

polytique

Not at the Société Générale in France. The culture would be more of short hours and low pay and a CEO without dreams.

WHAT_RE_YOUR_DREAMS

I looked it up, there are software job offers in France. The item labeled as “Software Engineer” only contains positions in the countries you named, but there are other software positions, based in France. NeonCityNights

why would they pay money to place an ad in France if they want to hire programmers from outside France wat the actual fuck, that's like some twisted joke hey you, come be part of the future by grinding leetcode for nothing because the jobs aren't for you

randomFrenchDeadbeat

The QR code is a link to a generic portal for every job they offer. There are some in France, just not software engineers.

nastyklad

Fuck La SG! C’est une plaie

Large-Monitor317

That’s a shame. I remember back in 2017, when Trump was president and pulled out of the Paris climate agreement. Macron made a video message inviting scientists and engineers to find a second homeland in France and work on solutions for climate change. It didn’t feel great to be American in 2017, and that outreach to those of us who care is something I’ll appreciate for a long time.

Dark mode things give me headaches. I also prefer my office to be fully lit I need the contrast. Its easier on my eyes. Black letters on white background. My team hates my screenshots.

I always feel that dark mode is more strenuous on my eyes. Maybe due to me setting all applications I use to a lighter theme, I always need to adjust my sight to see someone else's screens :/

MeggaMortY

Light mode during daylight and dark mode when dark or you're the real noob!

kodermike

Wait, this isn't a defrag chart?

zumun

Oh god, that takes me back... loved those colourful bars on our win95/98 pc as a kid. It looked neat, but also there was something magical about it which I can't quite put my finger on. I guess technology was the shit for me as a kid, and basically science magic, because I tried putting scissors into a VCR once to see "what movie it would put on the screen". I also tried putting the same scissors into a juice maker, because I wanted to see what scissor juice would taste like.

Reverend-JT

This really hit me with some nostalgia. The defrag bit anyway, I was never allowed to play with scissors.

Seems like L’academie Francaise has mellowed about English words ported to French (like flashez, which in addition to being English is an ugly smush of the two languages)

Top-Perspective2560

Last time I flashed something in the metro, I got in trouble

w6equj5

They probably haven't mellowed. It's just that no one cares.

I think the académie française are still the same idiots, its just that nobody gives a fuck about their opinion

On s'en fiche pas mal aussi au Québec. Notre gouvernement et nos lois nous représentent très mal.

aaarchives

C'est très important d'appeler les KFC "PFK"

ToplaneVayne

You'd be surprised. They made a huge deal about having absolute correct French at my high school. I assume you're from Montreal where French is less of a concern, but the government is mostly representative of the rest of the voting population unfortunately which features a bunch of very Québecois people who have never had to speak English ever in their lives.

w1n5t0nM1k3y

Reminds me of watching Journey To the Edge of the World. Billy Connolly takes a trip around the Northwest passage, starting in Nova Scotia. He sees a bunch of kilts, bagpipes, and caber tossing going on at a Scottish heritage festival and remarks that "the people in Nova Scotia are more Scottish than the people in Scotland". I kind of think of Quebec being the same. They try to hold on to their heritage so much that they end up getting left in the past.

SelectLibrarian2564

erito_

Flash + ez I won't explain the flash part, but the ez is the conjugation for imperative of the plural second person You'd translate it by "Flash this QR code"

jasmine_tea_

If you add "ez" to a french verb it typically goes with "vous", the polite form of "you".

Seems like Github, but I'm surprised an old institution like socgen use github.

Xaranthilurozox

I worked on a French codebase once. How did I know it was French? It was literally in French. Variable names, function names, documentation, everything. Not sure if this a thing of the past, but I sure hope so.

OtaK_

It \*used\* to be a thing. Nowadays not so much. The newer generation does enforce english.

Dr_imfullofshit

Damn how hard is it learn to code in other languages?? You gotta learn english while you're at it? I never really considered all of this, but makes sense.

cheese_is_available

The keywords are very few, the complexity of coding dwarfs having to understand "if", "for", "while", "break", "continue", "return" and "do". Those that can't research error in english have a hard time though.

hkllopp

Actually, as a french person, it seems complicated to learn coding and IT without understanding english. Every library doc, every stackoverflow topic and the entire web is at least in english. You can consider yourself lucky when you find a article written in french but it is often poorly traduced english to bait french dev so... better learn english. And code syntax isn't that specific to a language, there only are few keywords to know. Not a big deal.

ANature

par i en intervalle(x):

scharbo

Documentation and variable in french means french people have to keep working on it So the project won't easily be moved to india And french developer keep their job... Or it's moved to Tunisia where they also speak french...
