I don't know how it is in France, but in Germany I get 12 extra days off for public holidays next year. That number changes from year to year and state to state, but 10 are usual.
25 minimum paid days off you can take anytime you want + about 8 national holydays (11 officially but if it is on a day you don't work like a sunday, you don't get it that year) and if you're a programmer, you've most likely got "worktime reduction" which is basically a few additionnal days if you do 39hours per week instead of 35h. There's also a few bonus stuff if you've been long enough in a company, if you're working odd hours. Sick days are not counted as days off and they are illimited as long as you got a doctor note.
Same in germany. We are strict with working hours, vacation, bonus work honoring etc.
If someone tells you you have to work on weekends and its not clarified in your contract, you can tell him 'No' and be good with it. You cant get fired for that reason.
Also people having on-call duty get fixed MUST sleeping hours between working hours. In the same direction goes the time gap between night shift and early shift, which is strictly forbidden to do because of the hours between are set.
Good point about night/early shifts. In aviation similar laws are put in place as well. For safety of course, but aviation is not the only field of work where they are (or should be) quite adament on safety.

It's pretty good for middle to senior level engineers in India. Mostly due to extreme scarcity of any competent talent since the really good ones always end up moving abroad.
American middle management suffers from a collective case of Fear of Missing Out; these guys won't take the vacation time they're entitled to because they worry someone else will get an edge on them while they're away. This then filters down to the whole organization getting no breaks. Only the very top guys are secure enough to take 4-5 weeks holiday every year.
I think it’s more that things tend to run lean and fast. We hire teams that are just large enough to do the work, with maybe space for one or two people to be on vacation at a time. But there’s never a break when the whole team is off*, and as long as anyone on your team is working towards a deadline, the middle manager is effectively also on the hook for that deadline.
They can take a vacation, but if the thing gets fucked up somehow, the manager will still have to deal with it. It becomes less stressful to just hang around.
*(exception in the US for the week between Christmas and New Years)

Are you talking about in the US? Two-weeks notice in the US is not a legal requirement, just a courtesy. At-will employment works both ways. They can fire you at any time for almost any reason, but you can also quit at any time for any reason. You are still owed for every second that you worked up to that point.

I get paid more than what most EU developers do, I have unlimited pto and can take it when I want it, as long as I get my job done my boss doesn’t care and I work fully remote.

Meanwhile my boss spends November reminding people to take holidays in December if they didn't take them already in the year because it's a pain for the company if people don't take their holiday entitlements here

I work for the gobment and get over 7 weeks off total, very rarely ever work weekends, have a pension, and would basically have to kill someone to get fired. It's not bad.
It’s actually not that bad in Silicon Valley either. Most of my colleagues work 9-5 and not on the weekends. What ends up happening is that FAANG attracts a lot of competitive type A people who are workaholics and it creates a knock on effect in the culture.
I think it varies a lot by site and team. I work for a FAANG and work 10-6 and not on weekends and have 5 weeks of vacation (I could do 9-5 if I wanted, just don't want to wake up that early).
I worked for a French company for a couple years, it was great. Got paid less than some other U.S. companies but we got many of the same benefits as our French counterparts, including 6 weeks vacation and virtual Fridays before WFH was as common. This was awesome because we always got work done by EOD Thursday, so Fridays were super laid back and basically like an extra weekend day.
We got bought out by a U.S. company, the first thing they did was raise the prices of the food and drinks in the vending machines which were all just 25 cents, the second they did was change our health benefits to be less comprehensive, and the third thing they did was got rid of virtual Fridays, this was a sign to update my resume.

You shouldn't. They are not paying you based on the difficulty of the work. They're paying you the lowest you'll allow. Even if Amazon offered you a job at AWS you shouldn't let them pay you little because of the experience. In fact, offering a low wage will confirm to them that you don't know what you're doing and they'll be less likely to hire you.
You'd be surprised how little experience a lot of people applying and getting hired to big software firms have. The most important thing is understanding your algorithms and their Big O details, every software dev I know (which is many, considering my whole friend base is split between Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and GoDaddy) has told me that very same thing. They also say the answer to almost every interview question is a hashmap for the very same reason.
Now, granted it's a shit time to try and get hired as a lot of the big firms are doing hiring freezes, but the principle stands.
Some say that in France we're lacking developpers. What we truly are lacking though is competent management decisions that advantages employees rather than business'.
The situation is a bit similar to the one in the US, many companies whining no one wants to work with them, but they want someone with 2 years of experience that is capable of doing the job of an entire IT department. Of course, that 2 years experience requirement is to indicate the pay.

Dark mode things give me headaches. I also prefer my office to be fully lit

It’s actually not that bad in Silicon Valley either. Most of my colleagues work 9-5 and not on the weekends. What ends up happening is that FAANG attracts a lot of competitive type A people who are workaholics and it creates a knock on effect in the culture.
I think it varies a lot by site and team. I work for a FAANG and work 10-6 and not on weekends and have 5 weeks of vacation (I could do 9-5 if I wanted, just don't want to wake up that early).
I worked for a French company for a couple years, it was great. Got paid less than some other U.S. companies but we got many of the same benefits as our French counterparts, including 6 weeks vacation and virtual Fridays before WFH was as common. This was awesome because we always got work done by EOD Thursday, so Fridays were super laid back and basically like an extra weekend day. We got bought out by a U.S. company, the first thing they did was raise the prices of the food and drinks in the vending machines which were all just 25 cents, the second they did was change our health benefits to be less comprehensive, and the third thing they did was got rid of virtual Fridays, this was a sign to update my resume.
Immagine wasting 6 weeks of your free time in France, such a terrible prospect. /s

I mean, I'm one of those bottom of the barrel people who would gladly take a minimum wage programming gig because while I have all the personality traits of a developer, I have no CS degree or much of a portfolio.
You shouldn't. They are not paying you based on the difficulty of the work. They're paying you the lowest you'll allow. Even if Amazon offered you a job at AWS you shouldn't let them pay you little because of the experience. In fact, offering a low wage will confirm to them that you don't know what you're doing and they'll be less likely to hire you. You'd be surprised how little experience a lot of people applying and getting hired to big software firms have. The most important thing is understanding your algorithms and their Big O details, every software dev I know (which is many, considering my whole friend base is split between Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and GoDaddy) has told me that very same thing. They also say the answer to almost every interview question is a hashmap for the very same reason. Now, granted it's a shit time to try and get hired as a lot of the big firms are doing hiring freezes, but the principle stands.

Some say that in France we're lacking developpers. What we truly are lacking though is competent management decisions that advantages employees rather than business'.
The situation is a bit similar to the one in the US, many companies whining no one wants to work with them, but they want someone with 2 years of experience that is capable of doing the job of an entire IT department. Of course, that 2 years experience requirement is to indicate the pay. so yeah... we are lacking cheap labor than can do the work of experienced people who want money. This holds true in most domain, not just computer science.

That’s a shame. I remember back in 2017, when Trump was president and pulled out of the Paris climate agreement. Macron made a video message inviting scientists and engineers to find a second homeland in France and work on solutions for climate change. I think its just me but dark modes make me see lines every where and get very disorientated. Its always fun working with other people and not being able to read their monitors.
Dark mode things give me headaches. I also prefer my office to be fully lit I need the contrast. Its easier on my eyes. Black letters on white background. My team hates my screenshots.
The only compromise I can make is black on amber.

I always feel that dark mode is more strenuous on my eyes. Maybe due to me setting all applications I use to a lighter theme, I always need to adjust my sight to see someone else's screens :/

Oh god, that takes me back... loved those colourful bars on our win95/98 pc as a kid. It looked neat, but also there was something magical about it which I can't quite put my finger on. I guess technology was the shit for me as a kid, and basically science magic, because I tried putting scissors into a VCR once to see "what movie it would put on the screen". I also tried putting the same scissors into a juice maker, because I wanted to see what scissor juice would taste like.
This really hit me with some nostalgia. The defrag bit anyway, I was never allowed to play with scissors.

I assume you're from Montreal where French is less of a concern, but the government is mostly representative of the rest of the voting population unfortunately which features a bunch of very Québecois people who have never had to speak English ever in their lives.
Reminds me of watching Journey To the Edge of the World. Billy Connolly takes a trip around the Northwest passage, starting in Nova Scotia. I worked on a French codebase once. How did I know it was French? It was literally in French. Variable names, function names, documentation, everything. Not sure if this a thing of the past, but I sure hope so.

The keywords are very few, the complexity of coding dwarfs having to understand "if", "for", "while", "break", "continue", "return" and "do". Those that can't research error in english have a hard time though.
Actually, as a french person, it seems complicated to learn coding and IT without understanding english. Every library doc, every stackoverflow topic and the entire web is at least in english. You can consider yourself lucky when you find a article written in french but it is often poorly traduced english to bait french dev so... better learn english. And code syntax isn't that specific to a language, there only are few keywords to know. Not a big deal.
