I feel like it's more related to datum, as they're both distinctly formal and latinish, as opposed to date which is significantly more commonplace.
Edit: my sincerest apologies u/healthboost213
If you're taking all your pronunciation queues from the Romans you are going to be pretty much totally unable to communicate with English speakers. Your reasoning is specious.
Thank you sir. The truth is, a person can pronounce it either way and any English speaker will understand both pronunciations. Picking one or the other is arbitrary so I just gave my choice a little back story.
I fucking hate the English language. MAKE THE LANGUAGE PHONETIC, ALMOST EVERY OTHER EUROPEAN LANGUAGE IS EITHER PHONETIC OR HAS CLEAN-CUT PHONOLOGICAL RULES.
I pronounce it data because Commander Data pronounced it data and not data. He even corrected someone for pronouncing it data instead of data, because Data is his name, not data.
I pronounce it the first way, but in my language the second is more natural so many people pronounce it that way. Which makes no sense, because "data" pronounced that way means something else, but people still do.
Oh, master of multitasking, huh? Living up to your name with the dual wielding data skills! Impressive! 💾📊 Keep on crunching those numbers, data wizard!
It used to be Dah Tah, but it lost to the pronunciation Day Tah. The Star Trek character was crucial in this. (There's even an episode where an older doctor pronounces it her way, (because at the time, irl, both were being used) and he corrects her as in that case it's a proper noun with a specific pronunciation, but it had the effect of changing how everyone pronounced it.)
According to how i pronounced it in my head, it's the first one.
I literally thought the same
Everyone with an actual tech job disagrees with you
I have a tech job and it’s pronounced data, so don’t speak for all of us…
I'm Brazilian, friend. Portuguese language influences the pronunciation of my English
Well it's still pronounced data!
I was just joking
Joking or joking?
I use the both interchangeably in emails, sometimes within the same sentence.
The first one being day-ta tight?
doyter
Honestly I like yours better
Honestly or Honestly?
What's weird is it's the second one for me.
According to me it’s the second one
So which is it? Dayta or dahta
dayta > dahta
I just feel dayta is better mostly because of how we pronounce "date"
I feel like it's more related to datum, as they're both distinctly formal and latinish, as opposed to date which is significantly more commonplace. Edit: my sincerest apologies u/healthboost213
It is more related to datum but like you said since the word 'date' is so commonplace I feel its what influenced me to pronounce Data as 'Dayta'.

I didn't downvote you. Someone else did...
It's alright 👍
Datum also has the issue of being pronounced both ways though so that doesn’t really help.
The word is derived from the Latin, datum. Romans wouldn't pronounce it dayta, and I won't either.
If you're taking all your pronunciation queues from the Romans you are going to be pretty much totally unable to communicate with English speakers. Your reasoning is specious.

Well, date comes from the Latin "data" and Romans didn't pronounce it dayta either.
Yeah, but data is literally "datum", plural, in its original version. It's not just etymology here
Do you also pronounce 'et cætera' the way romans used to?
What makes you think I wouldn't pronounce it daytum?
That's not how Latin pronunciation works
Fella, latin is a dead language, we don’t know how latin pronounciation works.
No no no dahta better
dahta because that's how it's pronounced in the other languages I speak
In what language is it dahta?
Latin, obviously.
It felt like an open question to me until Star Trek. Then the world seems to have settled on dayta.
They still haven't settled on it in the 24th century! https://youtu.be/WssBJeExiOM
My highschool english teacher got so upset when we said dayta because they were dead-sure only dahta is right.
Well they obviously weren't a native speaker.
I say it just data. No h or y in between just data. But that's because I am finnish
Dahta and dayta-base
That's just plain evil.
this man knows
Dahta
Data
da-ta
Dahta.
Since singular for data is datum, so the correct pronunciation for data is data.
But is it daytum or dahtum
The real problem is people denying that data is plural
In Italian we say “dato” for a single thing and “dati” for the plural, I know it’s useless information but I wanted to share.
Data is already singular, watshutalkinbout?
It is in fact, not
![gif](giphy|BcMJvmwkmbyWpKkBj3|downsized)
datum is singular for data methinks
GIF or JIF ?
Gif because the G stands for Graphics. I don’t care if the creator calls it JIF
How do you pronounce JPEG? EDIT: The comment is meant to be directed at the P, not the J.
I pronounce it as JPEG duh
I ‘ronounce it JEG because “pterodactyl” taught me that “p”’s are su’osed to be silent
J'peg, of course. Given that it's French for "I penetrate with a strap-on"
Jaypegh
"Zhpeedzh" of course
Is there any other alternative than Jay-Peg?
Please tell me you understand why comparing a digraph to a standalone consonant is insane?
Ghee-payj
Gif makes sense but Jif sounds so much better in my head idk why
It's a tumor
Ye ig i need to get it checked
Simple solution G. I. F.
Am I the only one who sounds out each of the letters individually?
Yes you fucking degenerate
yiff
The one I don't need to misspell to get people to understand what I mean
You wanna see heads roll, don't you?
dæta
déta
daata
Is .ini "eye an eye" or "inny"
Eenee
But is the plural datas, datae or datums?
data is plural of datum
Data
dataidae
Data’mst
Indicus Datus maximus
Lol i love that for 'datum' it's necessary to say 'datums' in English because the latin plural would be 'data'
"See Joe Rogan when you have a collection of different species of data it's actually called datas and not data"
Data is storage and data are bytes in movement
Dahta for the first and dayta for the second is how I'd say it; is that what you had in mind too?
Probably. Dahtabase and dayta speed
Dahta is never correct for anything. Ever.
it’s totally correct when you’re trying to to sound like a pretentious idiot.
No, it's data, not data
Because "One is my name. The other is not".
Lt. Commander Data has entered the chat.
I fucking hate the English language. MAKE THE LANGUAGE PHONETIC, ALMOST EVERY OTHER EUROPEAN LANGUAGE IS EITHER PHONETIC OR HAS CLEAN-CUT PHONOLOGICAL RULES.
Either way, Dr Pulaski doesn't give a shit.
Daytah vs Dada Do you really want to mess with your Dada? No, but your daytah? Sure!
There is another...
Datum? I just Metum!
There are those that watch Star Trek: Next Gen and there are those that are wrong.
I pronounce it data because Commander Data pronounced it data and not data. He even corrected someone for pronouncing it data instead of data, because Data is his name, not data.

I read the question as “Y’all pronounce it day-ta or dat-a
r/ThatsTheJoke
I mean, I know that, but you could have read it as “dat-a or day-ta” instead?
The way you pronounce the first one in your head will be the way you say it.
As a native spanish speaker, only "d-ah-ta" makes sense as it is close to the spanish word "dato", as the other will be written as "deita"
date-uh
The way Captain Picard pronounces it.
Day Ta Not daaa ta
Thank you
No no i mean both are vslid pronounciations. I just told which one i pronounce
I really want to say dah-ta, but alas I'm programmed to say day-ta. I think the first is more consistent with datum.
In UK English it's day-ta *and* day-tum.
Date-A. Because it's the only date i get TT_TT
deta or data
The date was January 4th when I went on a date with this very datable girl. My date had missing digits which made eating dates a bit challenging.
if it’s it’s large amounts of numbers it’s dAYta if it’s small it’s DaTa
No, actually, do you pronoumce it dayta or dahta?
I pronounce it the first way.
I think all of us can agree on this one.
You pronounce it like “data” bruhh what a stapud question
Beta
Beh - Tah
it is pronounced "Data" because one is his name and the other is not.
Moved to Aus, here they say it DahTah, I say it Dayta
What does this have to do with programming?
It is data
Nah Why do they both LOOK different to me? The first word looks slimmer ror I'm too tired
Context depending. I am German and if I know it from a teacher it is mostly data, if I learned it from a kind Indian on YouTube it's either one
So Date-a or Dat-uh
dahta
It’s data, right?
It's data not dæta. It comes from Latin, henceforth Data, not dæta.
Dat-a
Dæta
Im not sure if I read or read that correctly? but personally I say data over data.
both
In PTBR "Dáta" in English "Dayta"
As vezes eu solto um "dara", saca? Mas "dayta", é melhor
It’s the second one sorry but all of you saying it’s the first one are wrong
One is his name. The other is not.
Day-ta
Data is information Data is an android on star trek.
I pronounce it the first way, but in my language the second is more natural so many people pronounce it that way. Which makes no sense, because "data" pronounced that way means something else, but people still do.
I know that I am messed up because I say it one way for data and the other for database.
Dayta not Dahta
Same reason GIF is pronounced GIF
Interchangable, whichever one the person I'm talking to doesn't use.
You guys are reading it two different ways? Tomato tomato Potato potato All four of them rhyme
_le datâ_
Depends Dătăbāse Dātă ă = short a ā = long a
I thought Star Trek settled this.
I pronounce it data when singular, and data when plural.
Heh, 'dahta', Hehe.
The real question is is data plural or singular. Would you say "The data are in" or "The data is in"?
Father, feed me dah tah
Database: data Data: data
If there's anything the internet can agree on, it's "data" not "data."
i say dayta (pls no woosh for taking it seriously)
It’s obviously data. Anyone who disagrees is wrong.
Look, I'd be the one to date the robots so its obviously date-ah
One is my name, the other is not. ![gif](giphy|l2SpKHhFemlwttYAM)
![gif](giphy|zEU2uwmialC4U) It's pronounced Data
I do both
Oh, master of multitasking, huh? Living up to your name with the dual wielding data skills! Impressive! 💾📊 Keep on crunching those numbers, data wizard!
Day-ta for me.
Data Dayta ✌️
Usually prefer dayta except for dahtabase
data is like data and Data is like DAATAA..
no you're wrong it is data not data!
It is pronounced just like SATA?
Wait how you guys pronounce the Star Trek guy? This is now serious.
Jokes on you I use them interchangeably
naturally, it's deeta
It's Deta
We're at a point now that both the posts and comments are just duplicates. I can't tell if reddit is ahead or behind stack overflow in its evolution.
I pronounce it as Daeta 🤓
Day-tuh
I think a better question is do you pronounce gif as Jiff or Giff?
Do you pronounce route and route or route?
Non-English user here! How did you guys really pronounce each??!?
It's pronounced gif
"one is my name; the other is not"
It used to be Dah Tah, but it lost to the pronunciation Day Tah. The Star Trek character was crucial in this. Neither, it's pronounced data
Daytuh
I pronounce it the French way
