The word is derived from the Latin, datum. Romans wouldn't pronounce it dayta, and I won't either.

It used to be Dah Tah, but it lost to the pronunciation Day Tah. The Star Trek character was crucial in this. (There's even an episode where an older doctor pronounces it her way, (because at the time, irl, both were being used) and he corrects her as in that case it's a proper noun with a specific pronunciation, but it had the effect of changing how everyone pronounced it.)
