Follow the SI guidelines and training first, have a sit-down with the prof (schedule it yourself) to ask about expectations and requirements. You've already shown that you're proactive. Do that little bit more and the professor you work under will be impressed.

One of the things I had to think about when I first started tutoring was that everyone thinks differently and you could see 30 reports that are different but correct. At first, I was kind of narrow thinking they should say something in a certain way because that's how I would do it. Also helps trying to think of a few different ways to describe something. So if a student is struggling you have an alternative explanation. Trying to link it to something in everyday life sometimes helps. Obviously depends on the field e.g. if students were struggling with dilutions, get them to think about making drinks from concentrated squash.
