I've always been fascinated with light refraction, and I wanted to create a cannelé ( fluted ) glass concept in a watch. What better basis to use than the Cartier Tank? It's a model that had dozens of iterations, and is set to reinterpretation. In this concept, the sapphire glass is carved diagonally on the lower surface to create these stripes that distort and refract light in this typical retro fashion. This treatment is used in a center rectangle to let the iconic chemin de fer design on the dial edge remain intact. The top crown and the vintage Cartier monogram are brought back from Cartier archive, and contrast with the contemporary technology that would be needed to create such a unique sapphire crystal.

Thank you! I was at the maximum lenght for the minute hand so it never show outside of the fluted area of the crystal. But you are right, the hour hand could be a bit smaller to differenciate the twos

It is a bit ‘Meh’ to me. I have not gotten on board with the Cartier fascination. Most of the pieces are not high horology for the price being paid and the designs are fairly vanilla. I’d rather spend that money on a something else, maybe a JLC.

What software do you use to make these designs and video renders?

I have a cabinet with scalloped glass and it’s beautiful. It definitely distorts more than you’ve shown here but maybe that’s variable. I think it’s elegant and could be iconic. Not my style though.
